- After the Los Angeles Unified School District refused to pay a cyberattack ransom, a criminal hacking group has released district data onto the dark web. Details: abc7.com/lausd-hack-cyberatta...
This happen in a few states and they always say no important info is involved... Then you get a letter in the mail saying otherwise. Smh. How inadequate.
They say the same thing when Amazon account and credit card information is stolen, then a year later millions of people have identity theft.
@Karl with a K They truly don't care...they all have security with hired guns that you and I pay for.
@Karl with a K Clearly have never dealt with Ransomware before. Pay the ransom and what? Ransomers say haha fk you we gonna release the info anyway!
Guess a bunch of parents are getting mortgages, personal loans, & credit card approvals for their kids in the mail
😂
💀💀
smart parents will know to freeze their credit
this dude really said “we don’t believe they accessed sensitive student information”. ya right, they probably got their full names, home addresses, and social security numbers of every student on the dark web now
Students = debt ... yikes
I have checked, downloaded some of the stuff and so far found none of that, except someone's passport
Somebody is lying. Mostly student info. A bunch of kids huh. Nah some of those adults has some dirt on them and the kids probably aren't safe
He really tried to pass it off as mere "attendance data"... Please. The dark web is not interested in tardiness lol.
If only they would report on how many kids in the LAUSD graduate without knowing how to read...
The "hackers" probably got their info from social engineering, like 90% of them. Some moron acted in an unsecure way and gave them access. This day and age, I wouldn't rule out it being on purpose.
Or put a Chinese in place and had them steal it
@@QueerdoLoc exactly 💯
kind of thats what we cough they want you to think
Republicans out to destroy California.
This is what our countries become United States of AMERICA we're NOT UNITED at ALL
The Beaudry building where the servers are located is hardly secure and ANYONE could easily get on the main WiFi and hack away. I worked for LAUSD some years ago in the IT department and I saw security breeches then. I attempted to raise the alarm but the people there were more interested in showing sycophantic devotion to the director Soheil. Good luck jerks!
@@coachscott4589 LAUSD is only good at ONE thing: burning taxpayer money. The entire organization is a bloated bureaucracy full of administrators and @$$-kissers. The IT department had no clue as to how to build a network and maintain it, let alone secure it.
That pause in his sentence just only tells me that he is lying just to keep the families of students calm from the data hack. 1:08
Politicians and law enforcement in LA now resemble East Coast and Mexican mafiosos.
🤦🏻♂️y’all dumb AF. It’s ignorant fools like you that are feeding these trolls and hackers
they probably got the full names, home addresses, and social security numbers of every student on the dark web now.
there’s about to be a spike in identity theft/fraud cases in the future
And the people responsible for securing all this "required" info who dont protect it properly never are punished with failing their jobs. Hackers would have been smarter to tell the school district we will change everyone's grades to F's so you lose all your state and Federal funding. Thats what they care about. Not student or parent information.
You can do everything right and still get attacked. These are sophisticated rings all over the world sometimes government backed.
School funding in California is largely determined by attendance rates, not grades. Failing all students would effectively do nothing to funding.
@@ericeandco In 2015 the Chinese government broke into the U.S. government and stole the SSNs of all federal workers. I’m of the belief at this point all your relevant data is sitting somewhere on a black hat server and all you can really do is ensure you monitor your credit report, credit card transactions and guard your email passwords with your life. At some point you’ll get hit, even if it is something simpler like me whose debit card got swiped at a gas skimmer and $1,000 drained from my account.
@@ericeandco not the point. These school districts require all sorts of info being stored and complied. There is no reason why that has to be stored on a networked computer.
If they are going to require that information to be stored, they need to be legally responsible for it. When I worked in a hospital I was personally responsible for ANY HIPAA information that was released to inappropraite sources. Each occurrence I would be subjected to a $15000 dollar penalty.
Why shouldnt they? Because they are a part of the government?
@@ericeandco A similar thing happened with a VA worker who had tens of thousands of veterans IDs on his computer when it was stolen out of the back seat of his vehicle. One of those persons info was mine. He still works for the VA. Not even a letter in his file. There is zero accountability in government.
Look at the way the superintendent is communicating. He is lying.
Lying is his only option….and to say it’s all about the money sounds like what they say went a company raises prices ….it’s all about the money
Not sure how they do it, but I've done work for Experian and in data breaches (like this) kids do get signed up for credit cards and put in debt because of these types of incidents. It gets sorted out, but it's not always a clean (or expediated) process.
well that's what we are told anyway. A college I went to about 8 years ago sent me a letter about 3 years ago telling me of a breach of my private information. They offered me a year's worth of free credit information aid. I complained to the proper authorities and was told I could not negotiate a different compensation. Since when does a lack of secure data by an agency or such get to dictate the terms of their 'punishment. It was their choice of the agency I could use also.
@Karl with a K or trace em and put some hot metal through em...
@@ScullCandy56🤣🤣🤣
Nah, they usually get away with it.
@@peacenow42 Likely the same group that did that software hack in 2020 that hit a bunch of colleges (they kind elude to it in the video). The IT teams at those schools are inept, as are most colleges since they claim to have some BS right to be insecure so they can pursue knowledge. Hence there are many breaches that happen all the time in education, you just don't hear about them. Funny enough though, most info has already been leaked several times if you have been in enough credit systems, so its not really as impactful. The easy way to protect yourself is to just freeze your credit, and not rely on any company, financial institution, or gov agency to actually be secure or have even good security, cause they all do poorly long term since good people leave or retire.
Don't forget the fun part of them getting blamed for it to begin with.
I remember in the 80s they used to say “look for the kindness in everyone.” I haven’t heard that line since 80s.
TIMES CHANGE.
@@cheryl5994 yep. And we all must adjust.
why wont hackers release the maxwell client list
I know id pay to see that 😜
Never provide personal information to a school. If they ask for social security, health data, address and stuff like that, refuse to provide it. They accept homeless and illegal immigrants with no SSN, you can claim you are one of them.
I am a person affected along with my kids and we were notified because of the hospital going when some of my kids needed to be seen at the ER. Myself having a baby there. This is devastating
@Karl with a K pay the ransom they have families that need to eat so they should get money the wrong way
Guess who will get sued, Also guess who is paying for their incompetence…
They say NO sensitive data was exposed, but give it a few more days and you better be sitting down when the news breaks that the hackers got EVERYTHING.
The US government needs to pull out all stops and treat these actions as attacks on us citizens and not just random crimes. They need very severe consequences for these hackers and their sponsors.
lol
Nah the DA will just let the get off easy. Phuckem
@E Randco: We have a Cyber Command in our military. I’ve always thought it would be great if, along with their regular duties, they could fit in a little extra “wet work.” You know, some “White Hat” stuff. The equivalent of when our spec ops and Rangers participated in counter narco activities in Central America, but on line. Payback courtesy of Uncle Sam.
And punish retailers who sell all our data to pedophiles
The Gov can't tell the difference between a toaster and a computer.
Sooo they are willing to release innocent Kids personal information so they can deal with bad credit in the future! How honorable of them! SMH
I'm from Miami, Florida and glad to see our former School Superintendent Mr. Carvalho standing up for L A schools in Protecting their students as he did here. 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
This is one of many reasons why privacy matters. If they don’t have your information, it can’t be leaked by an organization.
wear a bag over your head so won't know what you like either...
Wasn't it such a good idea to link our schools and our medical records and even law records as many places have done. Well done chaps.
@Sunny bob Quackers Well yeah. I don’t want my kid going to school with some anti-vaxxers sick kid infecting everyone. Also if this punk has a criminal record already that should be exposed.
no personal information , Smelling B S
Legend has it that a list of pronouns was hacked. Emotional damage coming soon.
😂😂
People will never learn to keep sensitive info on a computer that is not hooked up to the internet. The internet was built for remote access.
Nothing is 100% secured, but this was just ridiculous. Most hacks rarely involve complex programming - it's usually attributed to exploiting gross negligence.
@@mgonzo3881 Not a lot of code required when hacking usually involved exploits and social engineering.
They should spend more time on cyber security than pronouns.
Who wants the grades and test scores of any LA students?
Let’s be real, half the kids in the LA school district themselves have fake SSNs.
@@mikeg2491 AND ALMOST NONE HAVE A BANK ACCOUNT!!!!!!!!
When there's many hand gestures and no direct contact with the camera or person and multiple pauses...it's a tale. You better believe they're more worried about what was hacked then a students grade or name. I believe the parents are concerned but the school system...not so much.
I think you mean “it’s a tell” not tale
He’s appears to be looking into another camera. I. Ant stand when they do that. Look like they’re lying
@@jillylove101
A "tale" is a story.
That dude looks suspect!
This is just another example and reason private information should not be stored anywhere online where unauthorized personnel can access it.
You can learn way more on the internet for free than in school.
What you need is all your info up on the cloud, I need to check it out.
Forced to register with idiots.. and they handle your data with utmost security and care.
They might be lying?
you should always refused to pay, otherwise you will encourage more criminal activity.
Is it some weird Epstien like internal emails???
Have you consider the web operate on UTC time....
Solar Winds HACKERS are HOMELAND SECURITY
If the hackers don't get your money, the government's inflation will. They better hurry before I fill up my truck, lol.
If they know who is responsible for this or what group why isn’t the groups name mentioned?
This feels like Deja Vu
Superintendent looks like mafia don.
who gives a flying f
Ikr
A skywriting airplane
Simple solution. Keep sensitive data on an intranet system within the district schools--not accessible via the internet.
Thank god this hispanic guy in a suit is on it
This guy is the "Superintendent" for LA school? UNREAL. Looks and sounds like a mobster.. Most of the politicians in LA look like this.
I have a solution to fix all of this. But none of you are going to like it........
No one will but we must…
The Big Question should be How much does the District spend on computer services whose most effective protection is the OFF SWITCH ???
@@wysiwyg1 Their hiring practices are based on who is the most incompetent !
@@wysiwyg1 It's California, I think we already know the answer to that question.
Very interesting.
Not really sure we are “better off” with all this technology, these devices and the web. The old ways were certainly better in some respects. People were perhaps more content.
If they won't comment on what info was released, then people should be concerned.
Hackers do more!
Do bad; attract bad. Karma is a Universal Law.
LAUSD = Los Angeles Unified School District
Keep opening the borders.
The superintendent looks like a shady Fallout4 character
As anyone actually been to the dark web to check the credibility of this story 🤔
LA USD sounds like some new stable coin lolz
Good that LA didn't pay the ransom. What you pay for, you get more of.
luckily it was saved on hunter's laptop
Luckily trump saves classified documents on paper
This is the price we pay as a society for having convenient internet access 24/7/365. We make ourselves sitting ducks for all manner of cyber criminals. I see all these kids today constantly purchasing online with their debit cards, and I can't help but think about how they'll eventually set themselves up for a world of hurt.
@Karl with a K um, how does that remove them from being a sitting duck? Paying a ransom? Great! They’ll hack again.
Debit cards? So they're emptying out their bank accounts instead of dealing with APR. That means their credit information is less secure than it could be.
@Karl with a K ?? You think they will stop? Ransomers will steal as long as you keep paying. Perpetual blackmailing.
how was that possible?
Someone let them inside the USD's firewall. Simple as that. My partner works with a financial services firm and every week colleagues receive phishing emails attempting to breach security. If - despite the training they're received - someone clicks the link in that email, their screen locks, they see a message stating corporate security has been breached [ofc it really isn't], the Director of IT is contacted, and a closed door meeting + retraining occurs.
Watch the data released end up being more criminal than the hacking
now everyone on the dark web knows that i got a D- on geometry.
They have everything
Now everyone knows I got a D in Spanish.
Ridiculous. They didn't negotiate with them. They allowed to happen 💯✔️
They put a pretentious man on the air in a crisp expensive suit to run his mouth for damage control, and then tuck in a hotline that shuts down at 3pm (way before parents get off at 5pm) at the end. Which one is more useless? The man in the crisp suit or the hotline with inconvenient hours?
How terrible!
the whole school and everyone in it will be sold to the best buyer across the country
Never pay.
They set Monday as the deadline but didn't wait for... Y'all realize its already Monday in half the world. 🤦♀️ If the attackers are in China or Russia - its MONDAY for them.
Are you serious lol
Well they should have specified the time zone to use!
Monday, UTC =/= Monday, PST...
Not sure what the hackers in regards to data information . Start with the truth but you can't release that information . Superintendent of these public schools isn't ahead on this matter .
"we've released your data!" .. nobody notices 🤣
Follow the money.
Oh no.
Hacker’s are the worse people.
It does seem if they hacked Great Britain and thought Monday at an early Am hour was Monday on west coast that they would be from a place with an earlier time zone. So it would be like 8:00 AM Monday there or something like that. Or they just don't care.
I wonder who they pissed off
how sure is LAUSD it was not an "inside" job?
The hacker known as 4chan
Sea eye aye at it again.
Prepare for more hacks because of Nord pipeline.
Good.
Is LAUSD even worth the money?
Don't understand why they don't go after the abortion records, bet they would pay a huge number to keep that information secure.
when it comes to computers its never if, but when........ no system connected to a network is really "safe"..... if I want in, folks, I'm coming in.......
*Long Lost* Son, one day someone is going to bust your eggs.
Biden should have sent them a strongly worded letter like he did Putin! L-mao! How did that work out Ukraine?
Nice
Should spent those funds in tech yo……
That's like asking LA to be responible.
@@usernamena2324 xD I know duuuh XD

So GTA gets hacks FBI ALL OVER IT THIS CRICKETS 😂
Johnny Cash, we gone well to, way past Jackson. Happy valentines weekend trails, Hi Roy Rogers, KC 31 Alabama get away
So you want me to believe that hackers could hack school files but not hack the school funding bank accounts? Roight
Let me guess....california falling further again?
It would be cheaper to hire hit men to kill all hackers
🤨🤔💭💨> G.I.G.O. = Garbage in Garbage out⁉😁
Pay them in bitcoin and then track them down with chain analysis.

You screwed up, you should have prayed years ago for no inflation. Why were you slacking off?
This guy does not inspire confidence, to say the least. It sounds like they shut down the system, and it's their "own experts" (that helped create the problem), doing the assessment??? I pray someone at LAUSD, the city, or City Council, got Kroll, Cylance, or another top tier group involved immediately. This is nonsense.
