Thank you for putting this together. Born in 1943 at Lydia Beynon and living in Crosskeys, Newport was the bright light of my youth. Swimming lessons at Maindee baths on Saturday morning. Down to the Lighthouse on Sunday and I worked briefly dispensing for Lance Howell at Treharne Howell at 54 Bridge Street, probably the most beautifully fitted chemist outside London. Old man Treharne compounded a tooth cleaning powder called Hyfrydine (named because his wife was born in Brynhyfrid Road) It sat well with Reynolds, Wildings, Burgess Fishmongers and other very upmarket shops of the time. Who thought of going shopping in Newport for lobster, fresh oysters or fresh sole. Last time I visited Newport looked somewhat faded.
I was born bred in newport maindee swimming baths had been burnt down, Newport today has totally changed since my childhood I'm only 42y and still live in newport
My mum was born in Newport in 1920. She used to tell me about cycling to the lighthouse with my grandad. Her first job was at Lovell's sweet factory. She moved to London after the war, when she married my dad.
I was born in Newport in 1958 the town centre was always busy as a child, this was especially true on market days. Industry especially the steel works and Monsanto's and a number of foundries provided mass employment. but that changed over time as Monsanto closed up shop and the steel works had mass unemployment under the Thatcher government. Children were leaving education with no jobs in the area. I left Newport to go to uni and only go back to visit family and friends.
Junior production clerk my first job leaving school as a 15 year old in 1970 at Black Clawsons, £4-19 -6p my first wage, everone said they could of made it a fiver.😂
Happierfeet Risca, yes, I have actually seen two versions of the Newport to Brecon, a black and white silent one by HTV and a colour one with narration the one , the one you suggested. Thank you for that.
I'm ex military... I bet all them brave men wouldn't of bothered to volunteer for the army in the Great War if they could of precieved what it would of turned out like today??? I've seen active service..I'm not a hero.. just doing what I signed up for.. Wouldn't do it again...
Loved seeing that 👍🏻 unlike a lot of people I still love our city and I’m prouder to say I’m from Newport over saying I’m Welsh!! Cardiff 💩 and the rest of Wales hates Newport and east of us that’s why we get no investment
@@Unknown-wu8rv I am hoping that Newport will have prosperity once the city owned !!! My late soulmate was from Newport ,Wales !!! I am Japanese. I live in L.A.& currently planning our trip to Newport & other places in Wales & England. 💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
