- Songkran is one of the most important festivals in Thailand, celebrated annually from 13-15 April. The festival marks the traditional Thai New Year and is a time for family reunions, temple visits, and making merit. It is a time to wash away the past year’s troubles and start fresh with new blessings and good luck.
The origins of Songkran date back to ancient times when the festival was celebrated as a ritual of cleansing and purification. It is believed that the festival was originally celebrated in the Indian subcontinent, and later spread to Southeast Asia, where it was adopted and adapted by local cultures.
One of the most iconic and well-known aspects of Songkran is the water splashing tradition. During the festival, people take to the streets with buckets, water guns, and hoses to douse each other with water.
