Nicolas Godin talks Charlotte Gainsbourg and The Virgin Suicides | Red Bull Music Academy

Nicolas Godin is the founding member of influential French duo Air and recently released his debut solo album Contrepoint. Every song on Contrepoint is built around or inspired by a piece of music by Bach, with Godin taking famed pianist Glenn Gould’s Bach interpretations as a jumping-off point.
A former architecture student at École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles, Godin has recorded plenty of albums as part of seminal French duo Air, in addition to collaborating with Charlotte Gainsbourg and contributing music to the movies Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides.

One of the most underrated musicians of our era. He and Jean-Benoit continue to be a source of inspiration for me. Great interview, he seems like such a cool guy.
If you play bass, listening to Nicolas Godin on bass is an absolute must. The music of AIR is a bliss and has some of THE best bass lines EVER! What a total genius he is and the humbler and poorer you are in life, it seems the more God blesses you and the more talent and genius that blossoms from you as a person.

Fantastic to listen to Nicolas run with these topics. It's a joy to hear how thoughtful and introspective he is about his art, which gives a great extra dimension to seeing his stoic/subtle playing style (especially looking so calm playing often stunningly emotive bass guitar lines).
Just in case anyone is wondering, the three composers listed in the first question are Georges Delerue, Michel Magne, and Francois de Roubaix. They were not listed in the transcript, nor the closed captions.
Alain Goraguer & J.C Vannier could have been also cited. They are closer than the three mentioned.

The young audience seen completely disinterested and bored. It’s maddening. I would kill to have been in that room with a living legend.
If it helps to understand the context of these RBMA videos, these sessions are part of the now-defunct academy where all of that audience are flown in for a solid fortnight of lectures, jamming, recording, networking, etc. It's long and exhausting and there was a constant barrage of amazing talent. So it helps just a little to imagine how sleep deprived everyone is. The silence is... respectful and curious.

He says that its always impressive for him to be able to create/give the impression of space with sounds, even tiny sounds. Further he compares his own approach of music as the job of an architect: Often architects think about creating spaces with walls, which is paradoxal.
