Personal theory: Inklings/Octolings can't swim in water because of them exploding, but not in pools of their own ink!
@@GlassesIncorp47 Personally, I think it's only saltwater that is deadly to them, since it desolves ink faster irl. Makes more sense then water in general being bad for them.

This was funny but also makes more sense they can be in water just so long as they dont drown, cause it be weird to not swim, or go on wager slides, hot tubes, beaches, etc. In fact if icklings amd octaling could not swim but see humans swim their probably be some jealously .

THANK YOU. Like, if Inklings and Octolings really do die in water...why do they bother put effort and resources into a bunch of water-related infrastructure?! Like Brinewater Springs, Mahi-Mahi, and New Albacore Hotel, to name a few. Not to mention the water area/pool/hot tub thing on Flounder Heights.
Sure, I'll believe Inklings can be dumb...but I REFUSE to believe that they are that stupid!!

I always thought that inklings and octolings can’t swim because ink is denser than water so they self destruct to not feel the pain of drowning.
That honestly a genius theory. The only wrinkle in your logic I could find is that this implies that ink-octolings can self destruct.

Simple version: Inklings and Octolings have some form of water-related sensitivity that is taken advantage of during turf wars and other ink sports.
Complex version: There are three theories I have/learned of that explain this issue.
Theory 1: Saltwater sensitivity. The inklings and octolings in Splatoon are all descendants of freshwater squids and octopi, and swimming in saltwater causes corrosion to their flesh, leading to what happens in the games.
Theory 2: Pressure sensitivity. Effectively, inklings and octolings can consume water and step in it, but if the water pressure gets too high, they fall apart, once again leading to what happens in the games.
Theory 3: Nintendo bullcarp, cause Nintendo doesn't like dealing with lore issues.
Neutral: BeAmazed explained it was due to climate change is why the water in levels are deadly. So Shivy and her friends are safe

We need a official animation that they can drink and swim in water.

Uh Actually…Frye And Shiver Are Incorrect…I Played The Original Splatoon And The Third Game, And While Playing Them, Everytime I Went Into Water I Died Immediately So………
The water lore makes me so frustrated! I want my Octopus to go swimming but it's either she dies or I have to find a contrived reason she doesn't lol
Alright, uh, honestly, that's a pretty good head cannon for why inklings and octolings involvement with water, plus explains the colors of the idols of the first two games.

@@jaggerguth4391 can polluted (sry if i mispelled it) water be clear aswell? According to my analysis some of the maps have clear water and we still die in it
@@_.3n4if you're reffering to barnacle and dime and Mahi Mahi then its probably not polluted.
Barnacle and Dime might have some sort of pollution but its overall filtered from the looks of it and since its a mall that has water shoot out of hoses, and a mall that has dirty water wouldnt be a good one in perspective of bystanders trying to buy stuff, it probably has chlorine in it though.
Mahi Mahi more than likely has chlorine in it since it has a pool, pools usually have chlorine in them so its most likely the chlorine taking inklings and octolings out.
K can't tell if Big Man is telling the truth or Shiver and Frye are joking around and later they'll dissolve.
