Probably about 2 - 2.5 weeks to write and record the music, make and rig the character, shoot the footage, edit the video, animate the character, and add all the AE compositing.
I am trying to build a conversation between a real human and my puppet, and if my brain is processing all this correctly, I can switch the audio from one source to the other by splitting the layers. In other words, layer 1 asks question - I then split that track and mute layer 1, layer 2 responds, and I split that track and mute layer 2 when layer 1 answers? If that makes sense. I've learned so much already and the students at our school LOVE learning from the little puppets -- and now those puppets are about to interview our principal. FINGERS CROSSED
That could work, but honestly I'd probably do the audio splitting in a program more suited for it (like Adobe Audition) because inside CH you're going to get a TON of audio tracks, which will make the timeline pretty vertical / complex. This is how I do multiple characters in Audition, hope this helps: ruclips.net/video/VhCKD5vl848/видео.html
@@okaysamurai THAT WAS GENIUS. I had used audition to combine the audio tracks of 2 digital puppets, but hadn't thought to do the same process with a live human and a digital puppet! Noob question here, is it better to port your characters to AE or stay in CA? I am in the process of creating an animated talk show and was curious which is the better direction to go in. Thank you. Also love your work here, it is a big help! Thank you!
Typically I do all my character animation in (surprise)...Character Animator, editing in Premiere Pro, and final compositing in After Effects. I find that gives me the most flexibility. But now that CH has keyframes and cameras there's a lot more you can do in CH itself. So I guess it just depends on how complex you want the final product to be!
A handle can't get added to the timeline by itself, it will need a recorded behavior to control it. So for example, when I add a draggable handle, if I record myself dragging that handle, its performance will show up in the timeline.
Things will appear in the timeline only if they change. So if you don't drag it at all, nothing will get recorded. If you are moving it and it's still not showing up, let us know at adobe.com/go/chfeedback.
See Sirr on okaysamurai.com/puppets, who has a stick you can have appear in his hand. This is how you would set this kind of thing up, with a swap set trigger.
Hey Dave. Great videos! Im just getting started with Character Animator. Is it possible to change the look of Linden. (Psychical features/clothes etc.) thanks
Yep, you can edit his Photoshop or Illustrator file by selecting the puppet in the Project panel in CH and clicking the PS or AI icon that appear in the bottom of the panel. Any changes you save in those programs will auto sync with CH!
I've been trying to find something specific that noone seems to talk about online. How do you do an animated cartoon mouth on a real human? What I mean how would I make it look right, somehow I would need to remove my mouth completely without the skin looking weird around it, layer the original video as a reference and cut the frames down on the reference, and draw the mouth for each scene which sounds tiresome so there must be an easier way..
I'd probably do the mouth in CH and then link it to After Effects and do motion tracking to have it follow (and show up on top of) the mouth. This video talks about replacing the whole head with a cartoon, but the same idea could apply to just the mouth: ruclips.net/video/pYRNaEanbVs/видео.html
CH saves automatically. It will be saved as part of your project, on the left side of the start screen. You can also export your puppet with the share icon in the upper right and choose "puppet."
Can someone tell me where to find a puppet with flexible eyebrows? As in one where as much expression as possible can be seen through eyebrow movement.
Hi Dave, I am making an interactive documentary for school and I used character animator to let the puppet tell the story. I used the walk plugin and was so excited to see how well it works and responds to the keyboard arrow keys! I started wondering if there would be a way to export a puppet with these controls so viewers could control the puppet themselves through a game or website, and let the puppet walk in any wanted direction? Is there a way to do this? And is there an export setting that exports the footage into an swf file or something that will work on the internet? I have been looking for days but still couldn't find an answer. Thanks!
There unfortunately isn't an easy way to do this outside of sharing the whole project for people to open in CH. We have seen some interactive displays where people make the CH scene fullscreen and do something similar. For the web though, you would probably be better off exporting a PNG sequence of a walk loop and importing that into something web-friendly. We would like to do more of this in the future though!
Hi! Thanks for sharing this character animator masterpiece. I want ask you if there's a way to put just a part of my puppet behind an object in after effect... for example if I have a video with an open window and I want put the puppet behind the frame of the windows with only the torso visible and the rest of the body covered by the building. Thanks man, bye.
Yep! That's pretty standard AE fare, you would just make a mask to isolate the visible part of the character. Look up AE masking tutorials on RUclips and you should be set!
Unless you bring in an image, the background is always transparent in CH. The black, white, and checkerboard patterns are only for visibility in the app.
@@okaysamurai Thanks. But I've animated one puppet in Ch w/o background image and once I import the scene into Premiere Pro, the background of the puppet turns black?
If you export a video, it's going to always be black - only File > Export > Video with Alpha will do a transparency, and even so that's not accepted by all video editing programs. But if you do dynamic link as we show in this video, it should work with transparency. If the problem persists, please upload a screenshot or video to the official forums at adobe.com/go/chfeedback so we can take a closer look.
Hiii thnx for the video It's so useful It looks much easier using character animator I use adobe animate tho using green screen It looks like character animator is easier in that case ...
Check out the Linden puppet on okaysamurai.com/puppets - basically the hand and arm are separate layers but considered part of the same arm group, and the guitar is independent and sandwiched between them.
Okay Dave! I got the most difficult part of my project done and that is the lip syncing, but I want to go back and add more movement to the character to correspond with the video. however I find it difficult to go back and forth in my programs to do that. Isn't there/ I wish there was a way that you can export just the video part into character animator, so you can visually see where you need to add extra movement. Instead of writing down the time stamp going back into character animator, find the corresponding timestamp that wont always be in the same spot. I tried to export just the video without the character animator data, to import into character animator, as an mpg 2. so I could do just that.... it wouldn't work. what are your thoughts?
hello...your videos are awesome...I'm new to the software...how can I import my live stream from Ch to Adobe premiere 2021? I am trying to make explainer videos with my character
I don't believe you can input your CH livestream into PR unless you recorded it and have a video file. The most common workflow is what I show here - record a performance in CH, import your .chproj into Premiere, and now you have it as an asset you can do whatever you want with.
How do you create the chord-hand like an arm and fingers with the guitar neck sandwiched between them and still get to drag the hand without the guitar?
It's a weird setup - download the Linden character from okaysamurai.com/puppets and check him out in Rig mode. Basically you have to sandwich the guitar neck between the hand and rest of the arm and do some specific things with independence. You can't drag it too far or it looks wonky, but it works for smaller movements like chord changes!
Thanks, I did download Martin as well and managed to figure it out. I'm working on a music video of our band. In about a month it should be done and then I'll show it to the world
Hey Samurai, I have a question please, after recording on Character animator and importing my project to Premier pro the screen becomes small size and I can't make the screen edges full with what I recorded on Character, can you help, please? Thank you
Hmmm, sounds like the CH scene size is different from your PR project size. If you select your CH track in the timeline, there should be a way to scale it in the properties in the upper left (in the PR editing workspace). Otherwise I would make a bigger scene in CH before importing into PR.
So Dave, I figured everything out except when I exported my movie, the whole screen was black in premier pro when I had it set to a transparent background. Is there a reason why it exported this way? Thanks!
Generally when you export a video, transparency will show up as black unless you use very specific formats. This is why we recommend doing the dynamic link treatment shown here, where you don't export anything and your character just shows up without a background.

Yes, if Krita can save or export as a layered PSD or AI file, they could work in Character Animator or After Effects.
Good job buddy
Hiii thnx for the video It's so useful
It looks much easier using character animator
I use adobe animate tho using green screen
It looks like character animator is easier in that case ...
This is cool! Although, can I do all of this with animation I made in Toon boom? Or is there a way to do this entirely in Toon boom software?
I'm not too familiar with Toon Boom, but if you can export as a PSD or AI file, then yes, you could have your characters also work in Character.
You are a true Chad! Thanks so much for your great education videos!
how are your fingers moving with the arm? they appear to be on different layers?
Yeah I hear you! I hope we can do more with this in the future.
Nicely ✔️
hello...your videos are awesome...I'm new to the software...how can I import my live stream from Ch to Adobe premiere 2021? I am trying to make explainer videos with my character
I don't believe you can input your CH livestream into PR unless you recorded it and have a video file. The most common workflow is what I show here - record a performance in CH, import your .chproj into Premiere, and now you have it as an asset you can do whatever you want with.
What is the different of adobe character animation and adobe animator app

How do you create the chord-hand like an arm and fingers with the guitar neck sandwiched between them and still get to drag the hand without the guitar?
It's a weird setup - download the Linden character from okaysamurai.com/puppets and check him out in Rig mode. Basically you have to sandwich the guitar neck between the hand and rest of the arm and do some specific things with independence. You can't drag it too far or it looks wonky, but it works for smaller movements like chord changes!
Thanks, I did download Martin as well and managed to figure it out. I'm working on a music video of our band. In about a month it should be done and then I'll show it to the world
@@okaysamurai this is by far the most fun program I've come across!
okay samurai : can i add live moving object (mp4,avi, mov etcs format) as background to adobe character animator directly?
Not currently, you would need to dynamic link and go to Premiere Pro or After Effects for that.
Awesome 👍 please design more puppets
question? Can I transferee a puppets from character animator to premiere pro without after effect?
Yes. If you import a .chproj file into Premiere Pro, it will also dynamic link.
👏🏾 G.O.A.T.
@@okaysamurai Ok got it, thank you so much.
Every time I export and open project in premiere there’s a black background in read of a transparent one... can anyone assist thanks
You don't want to export from CH, you just want to import the CHPROJ file into Premiere directly and you shouldn't see a black background.
I want to make a blank puppet but I suck at the hair :,(. Is there like already made hair you can just add on by any chance?
Sure - if you found hair as a PNG or something online, you could just import that into your PSD or AI file!
