Lyrics:
Where did it go
Where’s my phone
Where’s my phone
Where did I leave
Where’d I go
Where’d I go
A woman always on the street called me a ditch
A ditch on my block, she said
I just want my mind to be a clear glass
Clear glass with nothing in my head
I keep thinking surely somebody will save me
At every turn I learn that no one will
I just want my mind to be a clear glass
Clear glass with nothing instead
Oh where did I leave
Where’d I go
Where’d I go
Where did it go
Where’s my phone
Where’s my phone
If night is like you punched a hole into tomorrow
I would fuck the hole all night long
I’ll stay out until my mind is like a clear glass
Clear glass with nothing going on
Or like a bug floating in the melted amber
Of a citronella candle
I will float until my mind is like a wax
Clear wax melted in the dome
Clear wax melted in the dome

Despite Mitski trying her hardest to protect the girl, the girl looks at everything with an intrigued smile. She looks out the window, curious for what is out there despite being pulled back by Mitski. She isn’t afraid of the world, of growing up, and accepts it with open arms. When she gets a small cut by it, she looks at it with confusion but interest. And she doesn’t seem upset by the man too, trying to look at him and only showing distress when Mitski beats him up. But eventually the girl is happily pulled away by the ladies in black, unable to resist the allure of the outside world and adulthood. In the end, her eyes water, maybe with sympathy for Mitski, a woman traumatized by the world who so desperately tried to protect her. Or maybe with a realization that she can never come back after going down.
The elderly woman who has experienced both- the desire to experience the world and the desire to protect innocence after experiencing it- knew it was impossible to stop, and perhaps in the same vein tried to stop Mitski from going after the girl.
No matter what Mitski tried to do, eventually the girl would’ve gone down the ditch, her curiosity and lack of fear for the world being the true sign of innocence that Mitski tried so hard to protect but inevitably unable to.
Underated comment I see?

Everything everywhere all at phone.
THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING LMAO
This chaotic music video reminds me of 'everything everywhere all at once'
The video is directed by Noel Paul but I don't think he was involved in that movie. Mitski did contribute to the music for that movie though
Aside from that, a similar music video to this one is black midi - sugar/Tzu (same director) so check that out
YO
DID YOU STEAL MY THOUGHT FROM MY BRAIN BECAUSE ITS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING OF!!!!!!
does anyone else think that the she’s trying to save a younger version of herself and simultaneously her future self and all of these people are the experiences and trauma she’s seen already that she’s trying to save herself from but in the end she can’t and they take her?
just what i thought too
yes!
I think it's both her current saving her past version and at the same time her future version saving her current one.

"Surely somebody will save me, at every turn i learn that no one will" MITSKI.
i love how mitski is so unapologetically absurd, prioritising art and meaning above all. now more than ever authenticity is dwindling because of how scary it can be, as more eyes are on us than we were once accustomed to and close to everything has turned into a spectacle to be judged, criticised, subjected to a verdict. her commitment to this kind of artistic truth is a breath of fresh air
everyone like this comment so it doesnt get thrown into the depths of the youtube comment section
i don’t always understand the art that she creates, but i really appreciate her for it
She’s literally art
Why is my bus driver playing this
i have a better question..
Peak reference
🐘: address me
Wondering where this reference first originated from
@M1k4m1_T3rV where is my phone?
She gave comedy, she gave rock, she gave chaotic instrumentality, she gave horror, she gave storytelling, she gave deep meaning and all together she gave artistic genius. The queen has served us PEAK once again and I fear I may not be able to shut up about this for the next two weeks or so
best way to describe this 😍
THIS.
Period.
SHE'S THE QUEEN❤❤
She is genuinely a genius of our time. Artistically, she’s never not served on her vision and that’s because she’s authentic!!
I kept hearing this song on the radio all week and at first it just felt catchy, but the more I listened the more it felt deeper and a little disorienting. Then hearing Mitski's interview on Triple J talking about filming the video entirely in slow motion and how she started a simple backstory and left the rest open for fans to interpret their own world… that felt so vulnerable and creative and made me curious to come and see for myself. Reading everyone’s different takes made it even more interesting. I’m a new fan, but I already know I’ll be a long-time one
This feels like a Fever dream

Omg ikr?!?
And i love it
Yeah I mean imagine someone who haven't heard of Mitski before see that...
FRFR
DUDE the camera angles and the facial expressions were so perfect THIS WAS AMAZINGGGGG
FRRRR
YEAAAAAH
By far her best music video in my opinion
Im definitely gonna draw those expressions
This feels like a representation of the madness that is social media.
The daughter is her innocence and her vanity, drawn to the outside world that appears to adore her, begging for her attention.
The mother is her self preservation and her self hatred, horrified by the reflection of who she's become and desperately trying to hold onto her youth and her privacy.
The grandmother is her addiction, blindly reaching around desperately trying to find something real to hold onto and latching onto whatever she can, trying to feel grounded, trying to escape the small world she's found herself in.
The invaders are voices and eyes of others online; the gossips, the perverts, the choir of doomsayers. Perhaps the milkman is the company media, invading her space while supposedly providing a service.
In the end, her innocence is sacrificed in the well, the portal to the internet which connected her to what she needs initially but also the source of the invaders into her private world. And she's left trying to make sense of who she is after losing that part of her.
Not a perfect analysis but this is the impression I got.
I love this interpretation! It reminds me a lot of her song working for the knife
Lol no
This is so good! Love it!!!!
This is so logical, love it.
fantastic interpretation, i think it works really well!!
sad when I'm not listening to Mitski
also sad when I'm listening to her
i need someone to make a full analysis of this mv PLEASE
i get it, but hard to explain
NAH FR
In a really quick analysis maybe it's about wanting to not care, wanting to have nothing but a clear mind, not understanding the horrors, being told what to do without thinking at all
she's getting crazy trying to protect herself from the horrors of her past. but in exchange for that, she's forgetting things and getting even more crazy, like the old lady in the house. besides that, the young self ends up anyway in the hole like her present self. the house could be her mind
I think it’s that the phone is the girl
2025:
Where’s my husband
2026:
Where’s my phone
?? What means where's my husband?? She never said that
@iscrewi663reference to Raye's song i guess haha
@iscrewi663 reference to raye, not mitski :) although i get the confusion cause of mitski's me and my husband song
2019: Where’s my Juul
Where’s the lamb sauce?
My favorite part 2:53 where she is just serving in the fireplace for a few frames
😭😭😭
HELPPP
She had to serve for a while before getting back to business
2:54 exactly ^^
mitski is always serving face
Of course tis comes out THE DAY my phone is stolen
what are you watching it on then?
the ending took me back to bury me at makeout creek and puberty 2, hopefully this album has more rock !!!!
yessss
Yes! Maybe she’ll return to that indie rock phase. Besides, no Mitski album sounds the same from start to finish. There’s always variety because she explores different styles. I love her so much❤❤❤❤.
@devotodemitski Frr I love when artists can make great music in every type
@devotodemitski and I'm proud to say Mitski is my fav artists
i’ve been saying!! has a bmamc feel with this clear development since then, i think the production (especially on the vocals) has lots of similarities to the land
Mitski, your cell phone is here in Brazil, come here.
EXACTLY
foi aqui em casa
yea and the case is here ing argentina
eu ouvi tb KKKKKKKKK
ta aq na paraiba eu roubei pq ela nao trouxe o filme dela pra ca
The phone is her child she can't live without it, it's an addiction to escapism and not facing reality and when shown with the fact that the phone is not going to always be there she demonizes everything that is trying to take her phone (the girl) away. The tight hugs, being over protective of our "sanctuary" and not willing to let go, and only after they have been taken does she see how small her world (house) was.
Such a beautiful representation!!
This is a really good theory, I interpreted it as her wanting to protect her younger self
Dude... The song has been out for an hour and you made a comment an hour ago, how quickly did you overanalyze this
@rozowatrawa y'all need to take a proper literature class I beg
@M4v1s.19I also thought about her wanting to protect her past (The young girl) and future (The old woman) so much that she let's her present pass away because she didn't want to change how she is in the moment which is stuck in her own head and being depedent on something that will dissappear sooner or later.
Love that this music video was inspired by We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, such an excellent gothic horror book
Could you expand on this? I have never read that novel but after googling it I wanna know more
@valennttinn Of course :)! We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a gothic horror book that follows two sisters, Merricat and Constance Blackwood (in addition to an uncle, who also is kind of present in the novel). The novel quite quickly makes it apparent that nearly everyone in the rest of these two sisters' immediate family is dead, and Constance was accused of murdering their family, but was acquitted, leaving these two sisters to be quite reclusive/codependent in their big and secluded home (this isolation being something they're quite happy with). Their secluded peace is interrupted by the imposition/visit from a cousin of theirs, Charles, and Merricat is especially not too happy with his presence. (I'll just leave it there, but let's say there are things about the plot that really parallel this music video, especially toward the climax of the book.)
I would really recommend reading it as it's quite short and she has a fun writing style. I would also recommend another book by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting of Hill House, if you haven't read it! From what I've found, Mitski in her upcoming album may also be drawing a lot of inspiration from Hill House :D!
cannot wait for the video essays explaining this masterpiece

I love you Mitski
I have no idea what just happened it’s beautiful
this is giving grey gardens and i’m here for it
I feel like the Nothing's About To Happen To Me album is about the bleakness and helplessness people experience while living without a reason
To me the girl symbolizes Mitski’s youth and the fear that comes with eventually losing that youth, “where did it go?” (her youthfulness). While the older lady symbolizes the inevitability of aging, always creeping behind, always there to remind her that her youth will pass her by. But Mitski still clings to her youth, seemingly obsessed with it and can’t it let go, trying to protect and keep it away from the the inevitable passage of time (maybe why everyone who enters the house is wearing clothes from all types of different eras), as well as all the things that steal our youth and innocence away (which is maybe why she attacked the man that was looking at the girl oddly, and the girl seemed captivated by him showing her innocence and naivety in the situation, but Mitski attacks him to protect her younger self, maybe idk just a guess). Mitski tries to protect both her youth (the girl) and her future (the old woman) from all the ugliness of society, but still her youth slips past her, no matter how hard she tried to stop it, and she’s forced to let go, now left with only herself and the world. Idk these are just my two cents about the video off the top of my head after one watch through🤷🏽♀️
Idk I think she just lost her phone I act that way too when I can't find it
@Shepard--Taurensame, but maybe we're over thinking it
im so glad other people are capable of making interpretations, I didnt understand anything
@Shepard--Taurentbh with Mitski you never know so maybe🤷🏽♀️
I thought this too and it’s like I can exactly feel it but I couldn’t explain it as perfectly as you did
2:29 i love you chaotic Mitski 😝
YES AGHHHH
LIVE LAUGH LOVE MITSKI
Goon mitski isnt real
YEAHHH
Looks like the guy in the "she's 14!? Zamn!" thumbnail lmfao 😭
This reminds me of the movie "Mother" (i think that was its name). I dont really know how to summarize it very well, but it got popular because of one scene. The protagonist, a mother, wakes up in a house where she meets her husband, or more likely, God himself. God keeps inviting people into the house, something the protagonist tries to stop him from doing so because they keep trashing it, and sadly it culminates into a crowd of people destroying her house, and one of the things they destroy is her baby. The protagonist sadly lost it because of the chaos that it was her home, and the people in there dismembered her son and ate his parts, which lead to the woman finally snapping and burning the house.
The whole thing of the video of people constantly knocking and trying to come in the house while mitski tries to protect this girl who seems unaware of who are this people or why mitski tries to protect her from them, which ends up being useless because they already got in and took the girl to throw her in a hole, almost like a sacrifice, really reminds me of this movie. The movie itself has many religious references, but i dont think this video has them, but still, i wanted to mention it.
I was also reminded of Mother! This whole video feels like a compressed A24 movie.
Feels illegal to watch this for free
Mitski Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday

What r u doin here
BEN??
Hiii I love your stuff ❤
she just gets me
I'm theorizing that the maiden, mother, crone imagery is purposeful and hardens back to Mitski's long standing theme of fear of aging and loss of beauty. She has moved out of youth and there is a surrealism to the experience
agree!
YESS
and the young girl is being taken away at the end and all she could do is helplessly watch
@nadasticyes exactlyyyyy!!! I also think the aspect of her protecting the young girl from men is pivotal. It really makes me think of bag of bones and other songs with similar themes
I like this, what would you make of all the people watching/peering/barging in the home? It feels so intrusive on something so private and I'm trying to link it to the fear of aging.
@milkjugs4771i mean Mitski is aging in the public eye, and there are people who are overly invested and invasive in any public figures life. Could also be more metaphorical, like no matter how you try to protect yourself and keep people at a distance you can't avoid proximity leading to people becoming part of your life

Thanks, well said. I couldn’t find the words! It’s very unnerving in that specific way.
I love this song so much because I’ve felt like this so much, feeling like I’m missing a part of myself or can’t find myself, then also where I overthink so much it gets annoying where I just want a break from my mind to be happy. Not just that but with the “where’s my phone” because sometimes when I overthink I’ll get back in my phone to distract me

New year, new Mitski album ♡︎
another masterpiece
I listened to the song before watching the video and I feel as though the song itself could be read as a loss of identity in the struggle to conform/be popular seen in the lines 'like a clear glass with nothing going on' with this context and after watching the video and reading the comments, I think the young girl represents either Mitski's youth or vanity and desire to be popular and be known, the girl seems spaced out and like theres not much going on and so this seems to be what the song wants back or wants to achieve. Mitski herself is playing either the girls mother or an older version of the girl, who is now traumatized by the world and changing herself to fit it making herself as palatable as possible, so Mitski is now trying to protect the child from doing the same thing and repeating the same mistakes either out of kindness fear or jealousy because she wants a second chance-- as well as this her constant patting down of herself while literally could be her looking for her phone appears ritualistic and could indicate that she has a slight OCD that if she doesn't do certain things her and her family will be in harms way which lines up with the idea that she's protective. The grandma or elderly Mitski seems to also be spaced out and unware but we see conversely that she is as she repeatedly tries to stop Mitski from protecting and sheltering the young girl.
My take on all of this is that the three characters are the maiden mother and crone but also represent Mitski at different stages in life her past present and future mitskis present the mother is constantly trying to get back what she had her youth her innocence etc and protect herself this could also be read as protecting her inner child but that's less likely I feel, where as in contrast her future or the crone knows that her past has happened and that theres nothing she can do to change that and trying to just makes things worse hence why she repeatedly tries to stop the mother from protecting the child. finally mitskis past or the maiden is shockingly the young girl who doesn't know about the world yet and looks at everything with wondering and intrigue something that is usually good but is also dangerous as it can lead to mistakes. Although I am unsure of the well scene at the end it could represent firstly mitski accepting that she can't save herself from her past actions and must live with them and secondly the girl getting thrown in the well could represent the spiral and 'well' of the entertainment industry kind of more in line with going down a rabbit hole, and this is what fundamentally changes her into the mother and eventually the crone.
Love this one
I’m getting mother maiden crone energy about this for sure 0:40

REMINDER
ITS OUT COME BACK
I dont wanna make it, i just wanna
The "present" woman longs for her youth obsessing over the younger girl, all that she isn't and all that she lost with age. The Younger girl longs for freedom, to be with the people that the "present" woman so badly wants to keep the younger girl isolated from. The Old woman is the future of them (If that makes sense???) at the beginning of the video she looks out side the window (idk if she still has her vision) and at the end she is reaching out the window as did the younger girl who so badly wanted freedom. I think that at 0:50 when it goes to her caressing the statue is her reminiscing??? maybe??? Every event the old woman is there with her unfocused eyes like she isn't really there. idkkkk
Once more to see you queen 🩷
you genius why didn’t i think of that..
OMG YESS
Now every time I lose my phone I'm going to remember this song

are the other women in the house maybe a younger and older version of herself? the video starts coming up out of the well so maybe this is Mitski trying to save her younger self from the fate she suffered
I thought so too! and at 2:41 she's beating up the guy which was probably a failed relationship that hurt her
mitski WILL save me actually
🤝🤝🤝
my favorite genre of mitski is when she soundtracks how it feels when someone asks how you're doing and you start off being polite then realize you're just unloading everything until you finish and take a long breath and then it's a little more ok, just needed to scream it out
mb mitski, i took ur phone and ate it 😔
WHAT 😨
😱😱
I interpret the "phone" in this song not so much as a physical object, but rather as the sense of being able to communicate. The question, "Where's my phone?", seems to represent a state of being unable to reach someone, being misunderstood, or disconnecting from the world. The clear glass, melting candle, and gliding imagery throughout the song evoke a sense of the mind emptying, emotions becoming dulled and numb, a feeling of slowly fading away. It's as if the narrator is trying to empty themselves, to melt their thoughts, in order to avoid feeling.
Maybe i'm seeing it too literally but I feel like this also has something to do with forgetting, dementia and the memory issues that come with growing older, from forgetting mundane and everyday things "where's my phone" to the mind being a "clear glass" or "melted wax in the dome". Also her trying to hold on to those past and future versions of herself and their own memories and experiences only to not being able to keep them in the end, with the past version of herself being hinted at being thrown into a well/dark hole (forgotten) and the future version of herself seen throughout the song being confused at things the way a patient with dementia would
ALSO in the end, everything takes a dark turn with faces being completely distorted, erratic behaviors, possibly paranoia etc and it's very reminiscent of dementia and all of its possible symptoms
SHE'S BJÖRSKING OUT YALLL
This is just brilliant. I love Mitski
What tf did I just watch?! *plays again*
MITSKI YOUR MOBILE IS IN SPAIN COME HEREEEEEEE😭😭
PLEASEEE MITSKIIII
2:38 IM SORRY IM GIGGLING
i loved this music video so much!!
here's the way i interpreted it:
mitski represents the hindu goddess, Kali, which represents things like
protection (as we see that she protects the young woman, that could be represented as her younger self)
death (as we see that her younger self and innocence is dead at the end, falling in the well)
and this goddess destroys the evil energy: the people that come unwanted in the house, searching for the young girl and to take her innocence away (they could be represented as press, crazy fans or men wanting to take advantage of young mitski)
we can also see how Mitski sticks out her tongue at the end and is hungry for blood: these are two main things of Kali, she is thirsty for blood and sticks her tongue out to prevent the evil and also take its blood away
finally, i think the older version is her future, maybe the future where she didn't beat the addiction and she's just finding something to hold on to
i think the "where's my phone" metaphor could be either wanting to communicate with someone to ask for help on the phone but realizing "nobody will save her" as she mentions in the song
could also be represented as obsession for what the media has to say about her and the lines like "where'd i go?" representing people asking that question, like where'd she go after not being present for a while
and generally, i think it's a metaphor for some kind of addiction that nobody helps her with
to also add: the cover of the song also has a lot of representation too!! there's a interesting video on tiktok analyzing it, it's by @sihaamspirals
i can't wait for more music of mitski, loved this song & video so much!!
I think that my best interpretation of this would be that she is trying to protect her past self, who she treats as perfect since she does not have the faults of her current self. She wants to shield her from these traumatic/tragic/negatively perceived people and events but her older self tries to show her that dwelling in the past is only going to hurt her more in the long run and eventually it does and she is left to deal with the consequences. with this interpretation the song itself is her trying to figure out what happened, her 'phone' being her younger self and she attempts to figure out where it went and how to fix it. this is also supported when the chorus says "where'd/when'd i leave, where'd i go" (I can't hear it fully and don't have the lyrics to check with)
...And! i now want to add on that the well at both ends of the video could represent an irreversible fall back into what she is trying to protect herself from. we cannot be saved and we are where she ends up, the well
CHAT IS THIS REAL? OR AM I HALLUCINATING PLEASE TELL ME IT'S REAL OMG MITSKI IS BAAAACKKKKK
