Donning and using a lifejacket requires very minimal instruction. Operating a parachute is a complicated process requiring training and practice. There are no static lines on a balloon basket so the passengers would have to manually open the chute, maybe steer it, handle the many problems that arise with parachute jumps, and do a proper landing on the ground. And, all on their very first jump.
So sad when I first heard this. I've met the pilot before at previous balloon meets. His name is Dan Kirk. Great guy. Had 30 years experience flying a balloon. He and those two young ladies did not deserve to die that way. May they all RIP.

God, how awful. This land used to be a successful horse farm, and the legendary Secretariat was born here in 1970. Such a tragic event at such a historic place.

Another thought i had was don't have a basket made of this material, have a basket that is fireproof, they can make fireproof safes so i would think that they can make a fireproof basket. Also they can use fireproof spray which i have seen in a documentary, it is what they use in films where they are shooting a scene where the room is on fire, they spray the walls and certain areas of the room and the fire never touches those parts.
