This was absolutely fascinating! I have always seen these bikes at a stand still, never in use - let alone in use by someone so knowledgable. What a treat.
I know im asking randomly but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly lost my login password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
Ever since I was a little kid, I have dreamed of getting on one of those bikes. One day I am going to buy one.
you can buy it from www.hiwheel.com/
same here. I have always been fascinated by them. but I have always thought they must b so dangerous and easy to fall over in and also how the hell did u get on it lol. but since he answered all my preconceptions, then cool. I want one so badly.
I love your videos so much! They are always so beautiful and entertaining. I look forward to reading your books, your videos always make me so curious about them. Greetings from Germany!
@@mquiroz90 No, because I don't ride bicycles. But I think bicycles like these are really cool.
I've seen groups riding these bikes in the park and had so many questions, all of which are now answered. Thank you so much!
This is a great video, Sarah. I really enjoyed how you captured the feel of Victorian times to go along with the antique bicycles and the ordinary. Thank you!
I feel as if I was transported back in time, thanks for the fantastic block of instruction. These bikes are fascinating.
I loved the video. I had a lot of questions about the bike and now everything is way clearer. I'm happy you're uploading more frequently. You two seem like a lovely couple! 💜
Good video. Very informative. Love from England X
It's a British bike.. love from England's capital..lol
Came here to see more about the bicycles, reading Love Will Find A Wheel and got curious, thanks for the information.
My Compliments from Fiesole Italy for her Mrs Sarah, j love your Victorian Life, !!
A few years ago there was a fete in the park up the road to me and to my great interest they had some antique bicycles to show people. There was a Penny Farthing ( which is what we Brits call this bicycle) and a boneshaker. I can't remember what the others were. They offered to let people try the bicycles. I only remember one tall young person brave enough to ride both of them! I am short in height and scared of heights so I did not have a ride. Even the bone shaker was big! I love the look of Penny Farthings though!
Subscribed! I appreciate your use of the word "wheelman". I ran across that term as well as the verb "wheel" ("ride" still meant "horseback" at that time) when researching for my Wright Brothers 1902 glider project.
This is awesome! I've often wondered how they were able to ride those high wheeled bikes. I've only seen pictures of men sitting on them.
This reminds me of my childhood, when the local Victorian festival would occur every year
I'm only 11 and I dress like he does every day and I have a tweed suit and I ride one of these bad boys
A great insight. I'm reading The Wheels of Chance by HG Wells at the moment and kind of imagine the hero of that novel riding an ordinary. Wondered how to coast, mount and dismount on these machines and you explained it wonderful y. Do they have solid rubber tyres? Oh and are the books available as ebooks?
I just got the first 2 books yesterday, and have already finished one. Really charming and a fun look back at how society has changed.
So interesting! Thanks for uploading 😊
Fun video - answered questions I didn’t even know I had. Yikes, though - coasting!!!
Que bicicletas antiguas muy extrañas. Pero son lindas. Me encantaría en estos tiempos tener una.
lol oh man....Thumbnail got me here over the many other videos. Hilarious yet harmless people. Nice!
I wish I could find a good man, like u have. u r really lucky to have found a good man who u can share this life with. dont ever take it for granted. :) and keep doing y'all. u both give me hope for humanity :)
So nice of her to allow you to speak!.😂
Fascinating, amazing. One question here, how are these bikes doing uphill?
I rode one on a vacation in the UK, it was incredible!
You two are just the perfect pair
This makes me so happy
I love you guys please adopt me 🥺
You folks are great! cute couple and love what your doing!
Great video!
I really want to try one of those after watching this video
Ah, now I understand. I used to think these were so terrifying, since I had no idea how people got on and off this type of bicycle. Significantly less daunting than I assumed. Might be more challenging for me, however... I’m only 4’11”.
Thank you for not using the dreaded PF words. The term Ordinary was adopted by the cycling press after the semi-introduction of the Safety Bicycle in 1879. Previously they were just referred to as a Bicycle.
sixarragon, it is true that research has shown that highwheel bicycles were not commonly referred to (and maybe not at all, but one can't prove a negative) as Penny Farthings until after they had become obsolete. They were called Ordinary Bicycle, or simply Ordinary, while still in production and regular use, although after the introduction of Safety Bicycles and other improved bicycle models.
While "Ordinary" is not derogatory, "Penny Farthing" IS derogatory. It is a British term of derision, dating from a long time before the invention of the bicycle, for anything that had become devalued to the point of being worthless, by the passage of time or for other reasons. Literature is full of earlier (pre-bicycle) uses for "Penny Farthing", always meaning something worthless or significantly devalued, and originates not with the SIZES of two British coins, but their reduced VALUE over time, as in 'a penny and a farthing together are worth but little', and has been applied to many things besides bicycles. Having said that, it is a more fanciful name than "Highwheel" or "Ordinary", so it remains popular, especially in the UK, for these old bicycles.
Nice job!
Very pretty.
I want to see a video about the female versions too.

Doing even 1 trick is impressive-
Are your sources mainly American, English, or other? I know the US Patent Office has a searchable database, for instance, and there must be bicycling magazines on both sides of the pond that have discussed the history of the bike, but I'd like to know if Mr. Chrisman is presenting Gilded Age America or Victorian Britain in this video.
Cool living history.
That’s it, I’m getting one.
awesome ☺️
I love the 19th Century Setting and Cothing. Very Fitting for a Discution about the Penny-Farthing; a French Invention.
eyy same here im always interested in one of those types of bikes, it seems for challanging instead of the bikes today
Is there a name for that type of handlebar with the side grips? I'm ordering an ordinary and I really like the look
Love it love it love it!:)
I want one!!! Where's your shop??
What was the source for the engraving showing two men coasting downhill, "Coasting in the Rocky Mountains"?
Fascinating! 💙
is it possible to get both wheels for my project? and where could i get them? excellent video I congratulate you.
Amazing beauty bike
Nice!
BTW, what model Edison Home is that in the interior shots?
Neat video!
Where can we buy these bikes?
Saya indonesia bagaimana untuk mendapatkan jari jari sepeda penny
I wonder: how well does this type of bike work without gearing? Is it harder to climb hills, for instance?
Depends on your metric of hard. It works supremely well, only the hills I struggled on gear one has proved to be even remotely difficult. I have found all hills I could climb on highest gear (seven on a holland bike... so no real beast). I would say the harder part is down hill, since past a certain point you have to give up the peddles and pray for nothing that forces a header.
The 54" penny I have gotten has proven to be a better, more capable, and comfortable bike. Though since my normal bike is no marvel I can't say if it's better than a modern sports bike. Just that it has in short few days become my main commuting bike, the only thing bad about it yet is cargo space, no bags or baskets... yet.
Crank length vs wheel diameter was as close as the fixed gears got. Longer cranks gave a little more torque, harder to spin fast. Not a huge change though.
Hello Gabriel is the bicycle a Jim Spillane's Whitney ? and are the Handlebars Andrews Design Bars? as I can not quite make out. Kind regards.
I would have not learned how to ride a bike if I lived back then 😆 waaay too high! why would someone come up with this, it’s so interesting
I want one
Does it go faster than the modern bicycle?
Also (although this is a bit out of your period), have you ever researched the Leonardo bicycle? I am curious whether anyone can figure out the steering on it, from that crude apprentice's sketch...
Lucius, it has been shown that the sketch of a "bicycle" on paperwork of Leonardo da Vinci is a hoax, added to the paper long after da Vinci's death.
What shoes is Gabriel wearing I've been looking for a pair of old fashioned shoes to complete my later 1800s to 1930s look
How go I get this bicycle
Where do you get that big bike bag for your penny farthing
I wanna get one.
So I have a question for you and your husband why don't the both of you use experimental machines like a Benz motorwagen it is Victorian it was made 1886 because I have seen the bicycles that your husband made and Im really impressed but I honestly feel bad because I'm pretty sure y'all don't have a car and it would be better if you had car from that time buy a replica or I'm pretty sure your husband can build one especially the gasoline engine
What an awesome insightful video on the original Bicycles.
I have a few questions for you.
How fast can you go on the old time original bicycles as compated to modern bicycles?
Is there any intetrst in riding these in our modern times?
Are there any replica bicycles being made and serviced?
Do you see any advantages with this original design bicycles over modern design bicycles?
One thing I can see is it may be harder for a dog or animal to attack the rider on this taller big wheel bicycle.
Keep up the good infornative work.
Safe Journeys!
On my high-wheel bicycles I average about 12mph over moderately hilly terrain, compared with 16mph on a single-speed or fixed-gear safety bicycle. The high-wheels are slightly slower. There are some modern riders, but not as many as there should be! There are several companies that make good replicas, and a couple that make pretty poor ones. I definitely prefer many aspects of the antique bicycles - more upright riding position, better view, up away from the dust, mud, and dogs, and they are quieter as well. You can see some of the reproduction bicycles I make at victoriancycles.com/
😊😊😊👍👍👍
What is the name of the hat he is wearing.
That's a cycling cap. He sells them in green ("Felix", after a character in my series) or gray ("Jacob", after another character.) You can order them here: www.victoriancycles.com/shop
@@Victorianlady Thank you very much. where are the hats made, are they hand made?
@@imperialrussianempire4780 The ones I sell are hand made in China.
@@GChrisman1 Where do you get your Penny farthings?
@@imperialrussianempire4780 Unfortunately, the company I bought my reproduction from (Victory Bicycles) is now out of business. One of my originals I purchased from the Copake Bicycle Auction (which happens annually every April), and the other I purchased directly from the family of the original owner. If you are interested in a reproduction, I suggest looking into Richards of England, Mesicek, or a similar manufacturer.
I guess I’d be riding a ladies bike.
Ahh those pesky flying machine contraptions!
