V10E16: Into the Layers of Wyoming

  • The week kicks off on public land in northern Wyoming, on the outskirts of Shoshone National Forest in the Greater Yellowstone region. It feels like summer in the desert mountains before exploring west into a verdant forest basin. Idyllic scenes of the Wyoming backcountry as I push the Jeep along loose and treacherous mountain roads. Some of the best dispersed camping is encountered here. I return to pavement and head to the town of Cody, to resupply, and then continue east into a peaceful and otherworldly remote landscape.

I don’t understand how the subscribers don’t increase by large amounts. The video is top notch, the editing superb, it’s top shelf stuff. 29 minutes is not enough for all the work you put into it. Thanks for sharing Chris, the last three weeks are superb.

One of the things that I really love about this channel is that there's no godawful background music dubbed in. I love hearing the natural outdoor sounds like tires scratching dirt, rippling of stream water, and foot steps. I think this must be the ONLY channel on RUclips that doesn't add music.

We put down roots in Wyoming in 1978, raised both our daughters in Lander, and now they are both married to two great Wyoming sons-in-law with two grandkids each. Our oldest daughter and her husband's home is about 30 miles north of Cody. Our youngest daughter and her husband live in Lander. We have four Wyoming Grandkids and we couldn't be prouder of them or our home state. Welcome to Wyoming and may the Spirit of Wyoming go with you wherever you roam! PS: My wife and I have been to most of the camping spots you liked and some you may never have seen, but it's all beautiful! God bless!

Glad to see you finally hitting MT & WY. If you're looking for challenging, the Morrison Jeep Trail is just north of Cody outside Clark, WY in the Clark's Fork Canyon. It's a set of gnarly switchbacks. It'll take you up back up on top of the Beartooth Range. It's the area that covers the mountains between Red Lodge and Cody. If you're headed east toward Lovell, be sure to check out the area north of the highway on the east side of the causeway. That leads up to the Devil's canyon area. Amazing cliff views out over the river. A lot of WY's uranium came out of this area. And of course, that will lead you up onto the Big Horn Range south and west of Sheridan. This houses the Cloud Peak Wilderness. I'm in Billings so the Pryor range, north of Lovell, and the Big Horns are my back yard. Was just working in Red Lodge the other day and was there again today. I really need to keep my eye out for your Jeep! It looks a whole heck of a lot like mine...only with doors.

Know what u mean about craving " town food". Years ago, I went on a High School backpacking trip in CO & WYO. We had dehydrated backpacking meals for a week to save on weight, as we were heavy duty roughing it. Made our way back to base camp, & the bus hauled us in town to Cheyenne. We disembarked at a steakhouse. Never heard high school kids so quiet when the food hit our table! 😁

Don't say that! I'm your neighbor to the south.. I already get a bad wrap for having green plates. My son moved up there to escape the wrath here but lost his job at the mine because of Big 'O' and had to move to Neb. I spend my money and time up there in summers with my boat, and treat it with most respect. I have spent many nights in my ice shelter when I was young, nothing like warming a beer on the heater before you crack it!

When you were in Lander, did anyone ever tell you that there was a song written and recorded about the city? I don't know who wrote it, but the Sons of the Pioneers recorded it and it was called Lander Valley. Where the trails end and the rails begin. It was a loading point back in the 1800's for the cattle ranches to send their stock to market. Every year, sometime in the summer there is always a cattle drive right down Main Street to the railhead. I saw it many times when I lived there. Chris, You're making me homesick. I mentioned in one of your previous videos that I grew up in Wyoming and went to school in Lander. I just love the majestic beauty of those mountains and canyons.
