I would think one of the biggest fears of someone wishing to surrender is that you might not meet a friendly enemy. If the media are there, it might ease those fears about surrendering. If that leads to fewer lives being lost then that would be a good thing.

Given they were travelling in vehicles operated by the Ukrainian military this should not be surprising, as the Russians are targeting any transport or supply vehicles that are trying to enter the settlement.
He gave, what I thought was quite a pointed statement that if there was a ceasefire 'our drones' would not be attacking these journalists. Which makes sense, the Ukrainians are known to do false flags.

I think Russians are making a grave mistake by cease fire to let the media come in and to reveal the current situation in Pakrosk and other territories, this will back fire, I think because the media will run with it in the opposite direction then intended purpose, false propaganda will sprial to choke Russia's efforts to end the war. Western media will spin it to their advantage. It will lead to regrettable situation for Russia in the future even though the Russians want to highlight their moral and ethical values in dealing with the current situation. It is not Russia that should pay war reparations to Ukraine, but the one who caused the war. It is the West that should compensate Russia for its contribution to stabilizing the crisis caused by the Western attack on Russia.
Russian money frozen in the West will be returned to its owner, because that is the logic of victory. Western Europe already knows what awaits it after the war ends - successive governments will fall like autumn leaves, and the EU economy will not recover without China and Russia. Actually Russia should claim war reparation from Germany for WWI & WWII as well. If I were Russia, I would not be encouraging surrender of the Ukrainians. Look what happened after Mariupol. Soldiers surrendered, including Azov, and they eventually were returned home in a prisoner swap, likely to return to the fight. You cannot capture thousands of defeated soldiers in a war of attrition, only to return them before the war is over. I’m not saying you should shoot soldiers trying to surrender, but Russia should not take any extraordinary measures to save their lives either. The armed forces of Ukraine needs to be destroyed, it’s the only way to eliminate the threat in the long term.
5000 troops is a pretty large force a breakout operation, very cruious how many russians are engaged in the encirclement that is likely a whole infantry division in each zone. I would guess it would be high rates of casualty but its still a critical mass of troops to attempt a breakout.. but it may be that they have orders to hold to the last man. I'm guessing concentration of forces is the real issue when FABs can be dropped on any massing locations or for mines to be cluster dropped through an breakout point. The TOS Flamethrower range thing would also be concerning if I were on the ground there.

Note the ceasefire Putin offers is for independent press entry to speak to soldiers and for them to surrender. Not the Zelensky/European ceasefire. So it's down to Zelensky to kill or save his men, not order them to fight a hopeless battle. The outcome will show him in a true light to the World.
