  • There is no mystery to grow lights. You might even be able to use something you have at home. In any case, I'm going to break down three different types and prices of grow lights and let you know the pros and cons of each.
    Remember the numbers... LUMENS: 1500-2000 Kelvin: 4500-6500

    I bought my 4ft LED shop lights at Walmart, and they have the range of lumens and Kelvin you mentioned. Best affordable option for myself at $22 each. I just used 2 open metal stands (side by side) and hung the lights with s-hooks. The first one hung below the top shelf and the second below the middle shelf across the two stands. Worked great!
    The reason I went with shelf stands was so I could move the whole rig to my sunroom as the temps got warmer in the day, but still too cool to plant. I usually wait until several weeks after our last frost date to get them in the ground because we tend to get a late hail storm.

      Did it say the PAR or lumens? Lumens are NOT a good way to measure light for plants, it measures how we'll humans can see light not how much light a plant can use. Photosynthetically active radiation is what you have to measure which has higher activity in red and blue, you have to buy a quantum sensor to measure the par accurately. I used to use a cheap lumen sensor to try anf estimate it, i just bought a par sensor and i was way off. Like 30% less light than i thoight

    2019 grew my first garden veggies , tomatoes .
    2020 dived head first into many pots of cherry tomatoes , bell peppers, lost all but three mini cucumbers, romaine lettuce, lost all spinach seedlings . I thought “grow lights” didn’t have any , so stole a few spare lights from husbands garage , the long tube lights , no clue about lumens or kelvins 🤣definitely gonna be looking now
    My husband made me two wood structures with adjustable lights so I could keep them close to my plants and grow with the plants . It worked too well as I started my seeds indoors too early and too many , got very much overwhelmed, but didn’t give up . I had 28 huge pots of Sweet Million cherry tomatoes, 8 pots of bell peppers, one extra huge pot of three plants of mini cucumbers and continued supply of romaine lettuce ( romaine I kept in the house) and that’s after I gave some plants away
    I have learned so much from your videos . My goal this year is to grow more cherry tomatoes, one variety of bigger tomatoes ( for sauces ect) bell peppers that don’t taste bitter , more surviving seeds of mini cucumbers , some more romaine lettuce , gonna see if some spinach seeds will survive, all in pots . My garlic I planted last fall in my tall raised bed and looking forward to planting some onion this spring in my raised bed . This week I’m getting on the your link for products and get those ordered and get my seeds ordered . I’m so excited !

    Yup, good advice. I started my mators a couple months ago in my house under heat lite and pad. Hardened them in my tiny green house, then put them in 1 Gal. pots. After a week, I added the Neptune liquid fertilizer. WOW! Step back! They shot up so fast, they are more than ready to put outside already. Never saw such growth before. I am not a fan of the old mators. I like the sweetness and tart of both Celebrity and Better Boy. The celebrity is a bush variety, and does its thing in a big way for a couple months, then I'll have a new crop of Celebrities ready to go for the next go-around, and will repeat that at least once more before starting for next year. Those two varieties have proven to be the best for surviving my local pests and diseases here in Orange County, CA. Thanx again, Brian.

    I have very expensive electricity on cape cod, ma at 33 cents per kWh so I also look at lumens per watt. I want at least 100 lumens per watt or 1500 lumens for a 15 watt led. cfl's and even the best 4 ft fluorescent bulb are usually much lower. If you have better rates then, these may be good for you.

    I use the ones that have a red/blue spectrum, specifically intended as a grow light. Mine have an automatic timer on them that can be set for 4, 8, or 12 hours (no 16 hours, unfortunately). Either I can turn them on when I get up and off when I go to bed or set the timer for 12 hours (they still grow up big and healthy, but take longer). Since they are red and blue only, I can have them on full strength without lighting up the whole living room and kitchen, and have low effect of the electric bill. They only cost about $30, and I have had much more success with them than when I used one with white light.

Talked to our fire department and they agreed they cause burnings. Research (CFL) - scientific research done in Canada about the same thing, but i had to do deep research. If you can solder, try LED light strips. I use 1 red (5 meter) and 1 blue (5 meter) on a 18x48 inch piece of plywood that fits under a big NSF shelf set. There is a lot of wasted light in white bulbs. Same effect as the super expensive grow lights and about 1/4 the price. One thing to stay away from are the silicone covered "waterproof" ones. They overheat and die when used for this.

      Newby so take this with a grain of sand (and compost!), from what I understand germination requires consistent heat, than after germination the light factor comes in. So maybe your grow lights can do both heat and light, but the germination heat should be in the soil (most likely in my cold climate from heat mat). Happy growing!

    Lumen and Kelvin aren’t really a relevant unit of measurement in newer LED lights. Most manufacturer specifications have PPF/ PPFD/ PAR etc. These are wavelength, spectrum and light particle speed and intensity measurements. I’ve even called GE and asked them what the Kelvin and Lumens were for a 700 PAR/ 72PPF LED grow light that they sold and they were like ???? Anyway, I got hung up on this Kelvin/ Lumen thing and I ended up wasting a pile of time researching Something that was completely irrelevant.

    what does the lumens matter? if you have higher lumens then you can just hang the light higher and light up more area.

    I have 9 spare 42w CFL and 9 spare 26w CFL.
    I was thinking of making 2 homemade lighting boards in addition to an LED for a small area .
    Would it be worth the extra effort and expense? Would it give it a decent boost?

      I would turn the light on right about the time they should be sprouting. That way they get the light as soon as they germinate

    • @amberweinmann9441
      @amberweinmann9441 3 года назад +4

      I turn it on when I plant the seeds. They don't need it until they germinate, but it won't hurt them any to have it, and some seeds need light for germination

    I feel like photosynthetic active radiation is more important of a number than lumens is since thats what the plants use

    The Mars Hydro light you are recommending is a light that is designed for flowering plants. The majority of the light’s leds are in the 3000k-3500k range.

    Is there a grow light that is waterproof? I have 2 shelves of plants that are irrigated above my raised bed in the greenhouse. When we water the plants above they drip of course. Wanted to install a grow light beneath the lower shelf for the seedlings in the raised bed. Thanks for all your helpful videos!

    Question for you. The apps I've found measure lux not lumens. When you specify the appropriate range for lumens, could you mean lux? Lumen measures total amount of light emitted in each direction while lux measures the total amount of light that falls on a surface. Physics is NOT my thing and I am so confused!

    • @cityofoaks
      @cityofoaks 3 года назад +2

      I came to ask the same thing. I found an online conversion calculator (it converts either Lux to Lumens or the other way around) but I couldn't even figure out how to input my information because it also asked for them beam angle... I said 180 degrees since my light would be directly above but it didn't like my input. 😀

    I am a beginner. I bought the LED Grow Light, VIPARSPECTRA P2000 LED Grow Light 4x2ft Coverage Full Spectrum LED Grow Lights with Samsung LEDs(Includes IR), Dimmable Grow Light for Indoor Plants Seeding Veg and Bloom 700PCS LEDs: Yesterday I planted all onion types in two 50 Peat containers with covers. I also purchased a warming pad similar to the one in the video with a thermostat. I don't know how high to keep the light, How high away to put the light, and how warm is too warm for the seeds? Any ideas, videos, suggestions?

  • @peterturner1582

    Thanks Brian for the video. I am still a bit confused, not with the advice you've given, but with consistency. I've looked at various YT videos on the subject and none of them are consistent. Some say you need 5,000 Lumens and some say a minimum of 3,000. You say 1500-2000. Is more going to be better?

    • @NextLevelGardening
      @NextLevelGardening  3 года назад

      More is always better. The more lumens the more expensive and the further the leaves can be away from the light

    Thanks for the video, just what I was looking for and will go to FB. Question - can those numbers be combined? Ex - if I have 5000K bulbs, but only 900Lm, would 2 bulbs close together give me the higher lumens 900x2=1800Lm?

    • @metalrabbit09
      @metalrabbit09 2 года назад +1

      It depends how much the bulbs shade (wave interference) each other out. The combined lumens might amount to more like 1600 lumens depending on how much they cancel each other out.
