    Hey guys. It's been 2 years since the release of this video, and being a person, I am flawed and always learning, so it's important to me to keep the knowledge here up to date. My explanation about harmonics and the ability to make "any sound" from a harmonic arrangement of sinewaves - the term "Any Sound" was an error in that context, even though I do explain it better when talking about the Tension knob later on.
    Delving further into sound design from a synthesizer point of view will teach you that beyond the harmonic editor's harmonic series lies an infinite realm of inharmonic sounds where not all sinewaves comprising the sound (or even any of them) obey the harmonic series. This is where inharmonic sounds lie: water, knocking on wood, footsteps, gravel, wind, untuned metal pings, and all noise. While traditional WT editors will not allow you to reach these sounds from the editor itself, going into inharmonic FM and PM is our traditional way of getting there, Additive synthesis like the Odessa offers another approach, and of course, modal synthesis. There is a module that explores Modal very deeply that I would recommend: Mutable Instruments' Elements. I have a nice little guide on intuitively working with analog FM and a bit on PM in my video on the Instruō Cš-L. And of course, the Odessa goes right in there with the tension, bank and ratio knobs. Happy bleepybloops! See you on my next release. Catch Flowstate on Artlist (or any other platform) if you haven't heard it yet!

    Love your video! Watched this often when I go the Odessa, great overview, thank you! Seeing that you have Stages, wanted to share my favorite trick with it. Try taking the fundamental and use that to clock a LFO in Stages. I will track pretty decently and you can change the pitch of your LFO along the harmonic series. This way the fundamental can be at a different pitch but still related to the odd and even parts. You can also change the wave shape from Saw, to Sine, Trapezoid and Square and mix it back in. Take care and thanks again for making great videos

    Great video. I made an album on Odessa that goes heavy into stereo phasing. Def ace for that. In fact I don’t hear the detail from this voice until it’s hard panned LR

    • @Worldwave
      @Worldwave  3 года назад +1

      I believe that hard-panning the two outputs left and right is only one aspect of what Odessa can do and it has a very specific characteristic.
      There's a world to explore in using each output on its own or in combination with the fundamental output or crossmodding between the two outputs. This world includes all the basic shapes with a myriad unique harmonic movements between them.

  • @brianreilly6545
    @brianreilly6545 3 года назад +1

    Hey my Odessa wizard. Continued thanks for this tutorial. Takin me some time to wrap my mind around the banks/harmonic factor/ even odd outputs. Do know why the bank knob is label + - 8?
    I get the 8 part but don’t understand the + -.

    • @Worldwave
      @Worldwave  3 года назад +1

      Super glad you enjoyed this! The +- is a bit confusing, yes. Basically the + or - indicate inversion, so when going towards + you will get odd groups of harmonics out of the odd output, and when going to - you will get even groups of harmomics out of the odd output. And vice-versa for the even output.
      It also changes which output gets shifted by the harmonic cluster knob. When turned right the cluster knob shifts the right output and when turned to the left the cluster knob shifts the left.

    I own and love 4ms ensemble vco but i need a second vco like this.
    Thx

    • @Worldwave
      @Worldwave  5 месяцев назад

      I'm currently out of the Eurorack space, but my favorite for harmonic voices was Plaits, actually. It's super simple but gets you to the point quickly, in a format that's not so conducive to harmony. I didn't enjoy big harmonic oscs like the 4ms, due to lack of immediacy for complex ideas, but that's just me! Hope this was any help. I can't recommend MI Plaits enough.

    great video. How hard is it to change the silver panels out for black ones for someone who has no experience working on modules?

    • @Worldwave
      @Worldwave  3 года назад

      Hmm. It's not hard at all if you have a good set of small bits, and the wrench needed to loosen the jack nuts. The big boy knob is a little more challenging as it needs another bit to loosen it (DONT pull it off like the rest of the knobs) and there's a little strip of tape it needs to stay reliable and you have to be careful not to lose it. Generally I'd say contact support and they'll give you a full rundown of the process, they're all amazing over there. Good luck! XAOC black panels are super badass.

    Thank you for making this video, it is very helpful to me!
    May I ask about the Hel expender? I am a little confused about its function. Is it like the sub-oscillator of Moog Subharmonicon to control the harmonics generated by the main oscillator?
    In addition, would you recommend it? because I only have a 62hp palette case, and there is not enough space after I putting in Odessa. If there is no Hel expender, will the sound change be less?

    • @Worldwave
      @Worldwave  3 года назад +1

      Hi there. The Hel expander is quite cool and unique for what the Odessa does with it. Basically, the Odessa can generate 1, 3 or 5 voices and nothing inbetween. These voices are in unison with the root note (1v/oct input). When Hel is connected and has 1v/oct inputs you can control the root note and other voices through the inputs there when using multiple voices, each voice gets its own 1v/oct input. My gripe with it was you can't have 4-note harmonies, only 3 and 5.

    • @misty6858
      @misty6858 3 года назад +1

      @@Worldwave HI,Thank you for reply. If you set Odessa to 5 voices and use Hel expender, 1v/oct to insert Root, 2, 3 and 4, can you create 4-note harmonies?

    • @Worldwave
