    I came over to this game originally because SimCity 4 refuses to use anything but the Intel graphics instead of my RTX3080 in my new laptop, leading to terrible fps with all the gigs and gigs of mods and objects I have all over my lands in game.... (16gb of RAM aint enough for cities skylines + all the traffic and building mods I want....) But this game, and the modlist in options, it was so foreign to me. But I had gotten super into Transport Fever 2 this month, and after the game couldnt handle all the traffic & train action I desired, I decided to try this again. I've now gotten everything setup for the perfect "take Japan through the century" playthrough, but was pulling out my hair with all the "TRAIN #12 IS LOST" b.s. LMFAO!! This helped me understand exactly how these signals are operating in the gameworld. Thank you so much !!!!

    For the 12.0 release, the signals menu has been simplified by default to just path signals.
    In order to get the other 4 signals back go to:
    "Settings" then change the drop down menu at the top that says "Category" to "Expert (show all settings, including weird ones)"
    type "signal" into the "Filter String" search bar
    inside the "Company" drop down change the "show signal types" to "All signals."

    Just recently the devs have hidden the advanced signals and made it so that you can only use either one way or two way path signals when you first start a game of openttd. They claim this was done so as to not overwhelm newer players and that path signals are good enough for most people's games.

    • @w00tklumpWn
      @w00tklumpWn 6 лет назад +2

      Path signals in general do not care about trains already in the singnal block. They only look for a valid route and go there. The problem is, that trains reserve lots of path after a pathsignal, until it hits another signal. So to cut the reservation infront/behind a station, just put a twoway path signal on both ends, facing the station.
      Should you have one-way stations, you can of course use the one-way path signals. If not, well youse two-way. They allow to enter from the back.

    Ive always just used block, exit and entry signals only.
    But hearing about how path signals work make them sound alot more useful, I'm sure the other signals have their place but for most systems surely path signals are enough on their own right? That makes it alot simpler xD

    • @LugnutsK

      Yup, you can do almost everything with just path signals and many people do that. Only intermediate and advanced things like priorities and overflows require block signals.

    You should have started with explaining what signals do before you explain how to place them. I don't know why I want a high signal density when I don't know what it frigging does.

    • @DC4444
      @DC4444 5 лет назад

      Signals allow multiple trains to operate on a line or network. High signal density is useful on really busy lines and networks. The higher the signal density, the closer that trains can follow each other. Lastly, there are multiple signal tutorials on RUclips. Some of them may explain your problem better. Just search OpenTTD signal tutorial to find them. Edit: The wiki has a page on signals as well.

      It might be crazy but its actually a computer science concept being simulated here
      The tracks are your System Resources, the trains are the Threads running in your system
      And the signals are semaphores that allow synchronization between threads
      Its really a cool way to understand Multithreading in an OS

    god so confusing lol i think i sort of get it just started playing so i'll try it out next time when i have more brain power thanks for explaining it was clear enough but you could have made the tracks wider and longer also used train colors that are more visible the path color and train bed makes it confusing lol plus the end of the train looks like the front.
    Ok heres an attempt to explain what i have and tell me which signals should i use. I have 3 stations in a straight line. a 2 platform station in the middle letting 3-4(5 if i can get passenger too) trains use the station with the 4th going through. The station is in the middle with 2 trains on the left entering and exiting to the left. and one train on the right exit to the right as well. Finally I have a 4th train going through the station because its too expensive to build another track around the station so i let it go through. how do i keep the two train on the left use only the top platform to load and unload, while letting the through train use the bottom platform as through track. The train on the right can use which ever track is free. Remember the through train needs to run through again to return to the other side. i need help figuring out which signal goes where.
    On the left side, the top track has a route to the top platform. the bottom track has a switch towards the top and a straight track through the bottom. on the right side the two track are simply crossed. top and bottom track are parallel with no gap between each other.
    someone help solve this i'll check again tomorrow thanks guys :)

    You are...quite terrible at explaining things.
    Not only that, but you just HAD TO choose the exact graphics pack and exact trains and stations that i cant actually tell what i'm even looking at, just a mess of gray lines everywhere.

      I'd like you to try and explain the same stuff he did. Let's see who's better.

    I recently build a monorail spanning my whole 256x256 world and yes, even three islands that are far away from the mainland.
    Thanks to poor signaling, a traffic jam of 4 out of 9 monorails occured. I placed other combo signals and placed some depots to fix this. This video helped me solve a big problem before it was too late.
