This is really useful. Its daunting but having a concrete agreement between manager and artist actually improves the relationship. An artist having a manager can be great, but with experience, it rarely works when the manager has to be a babysitter. Managers are most effective when an artist is already managing themselves. A good contractual agreement helps to keep everyone focused.
i dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost the login password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
As an artist manager and also a record label this video 1 is spot on. Here in Australia we have a CODE of Conduct to adhere to,. the contract should be basically covering What the artist wants what the manager can do get out of jail clause e,g, KISS .artst freak out at a contract of only 13 pages omg thats a watered down for 52 pages. Im tailoring mine now to max of 3 to 8 pages.
Reading a book "Managing Pop Artists in the Music Industry" by Mitch Weiss (2012) (manager for the Village People) and just got to the contract / negotiating section. This video is perfect to help beat these points into my brain. Excellent presentation also. Very well executed and helpful!
Full of amazing info, my man. Great stuff. Got offered a contract and everything in it is exactly in the order you’re talking. It’s cool to hear other perspectives and have a reference point. Especially what’s the general term duration is. My straight up started with 5 years lol gonna watch the part 2 now, thanks! ⛏🩸
This was very informative. I don’t think you should be worried about video length. Break them up definitely, but I could’ve sat for at least another 10-15 minutes giving you time to proceed into section 4 & 5. Great job regardless I’m hooked👍🏾
I've started working with a manager (for acting and my comedy music) so the timing of this is good for me. I made a few notes about things to pay attention to in the contract. Thanks!
currently writing my own agreement following your video and will contact you if I need assistance. Thank you for this video I solely appreciate this a lot. its very thorough and encouraging.
Just came across this video. It’s a total life saver. Is there any way that I can get in contact with you? I have a question regarding a management offer I’ve received.
Hey bro. Massive question for you, so I built an artist up he finally got signed and typical like a lot of things, I was cut out, but we did sign a artist management contract before hand but the contract was just him and I no lawyer was involved, but I also have him in multiple texts through out the last couple years him talking about what I get when he gets signed. So small story short he went and signed and cut me out. Anything I can do? And now the label wants my main youtube page with all his videos I shot on it. I'm lost af
"Timing is everything", releasing this video now is just perfect for me. I recently finished recording my 'Management module' (for my UK music business course) but initially focussed on 'Becoming a manager', I'll be doing the 'Artist - what to look for in a manager' version soon and this will help with constructing mine. Thanks, Circa, you're a star! BTW are you going to do one on 'When the record label wants to sign you to their management choice'? Had to deal with this situation with US label & UK band in 2014, nearly fell out of my chair seeing this old chestnut reappearing in the 21st century!
@@musicmarketing I'm an artist manager, and I represent one artist and one producer (M.A.G.S. and Oscar White). I also consult quite a bit. One of the things a Manager is there to do is to help build the artists team and that includes lawyers. What I've done with my guys is present a few options for lawyers and have them choose one that fits best. Bottom line is that they need their own lawyer, but many have no idea where to start.
Michael M 3 კვირის წინ I am an artist and i would love to work with you.I think my music describes this phase that I am in very well but not in a cheap way. it's more organic. in my opinion, I have a lot to improve but I think my songwriting ability is very good. I think my sound and style will be influential. I am still working and searching for my sound and because of that I have lots of different style tracks but I hope you will like it.
With all this legal jarvin it makes me think of other financial vids i watch, at the end or during they say "see a real accountant this is for entertainment purposes only" do you have to do that here or its just explaining the terms basically?
Hey Circ! Loving the new series! Just because I love ya and I don’t wanna see you get in trouble, make sure to include some verbiage about the fact that you’re not a lawyer and this should not be considered legal advice! That way you cover your butt. Big hugs for you and the indie gang!
I appreciate that yo! I actually did some due diligence on this matter, and as a regular ol' non-lawyer citizen I can freely give my opinion (and even what you might consider "advice") without a disclaimer. However, if I were to practice by conduct, like, for instance, charge for legal consultation on management agreements, that would be a violation. Practicing law without a license is an issue. The reason you see a lot of disclaimers on the internet about something "not being legal advice" is usually because the person giving the advice IS actually a lawyer. And, that creates two separate problems: 1. The lawyer is most likely not licensed in every state that a viewer of the content resides in. And, as such, if their advice was constituted as a "legal advisement", which is more probable given that they are a law professional, they may be in violation (practicing law without a license). 2. There is a thing called "attorney-client liability" which basically makes an attorney liable for the legal actions of their clients. If an attorney does not explicitly state that a given communication with a person (RUclips video, email, letter) is NOT legal advice, then they could be liable for the actions of the person receiving the advice. To avoid the liability, a disclaimer is generally used on all attorney communication UNTIL a letter of intent or retainer has been issued and signed. Hope that clears things up! HA! Nice disclaimer to the non-disclaimer 😂 this is why you’re the man! I’m commenting from my old band account, but be in the lookout for Rara Hooray! Gonna use the indie strategy to take over the world 💪🏼
Never sign any artists contracts that involves a third party most likely that third party is a publishing company they told you nothin about and if you sign it without knowing youre signing over your royalties basically
You wish it weren't so lopsided? ha, haa, ha. Then why not change it to add requirements that make it more fair to the artist, i.e., circumstances that would allow you to terminate the contract with the manager, etc?
So, you're saying a manager should work for free,? An artist can't maintain the heavy load by himself or herself that's why a manager is needed, good luck on the people who want to self manage their careers.

Hi. 🙂 Thanks for putting this video together. Please, let us pray together. Dear God who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever in Jesus Christ's name we pray amen. 1 Corinthians 16:14 Let all that you do be done in love. Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. May all suffering end as we give thanks this day. May God's face shine upon us forever on Earth as it is in Heaven in Jesus Christ's name we pray for His name and for His sake. Amen.

This guy is great. He's worth about $120 worth of music industry books & at least a couple semester's worth of know how.
He looks like Biz Stone who was a founding member of Twitter. I went to school with him

Yes, you can sue. It doesn't matter if he had an attorney, that's his responsibility.
Bro you are so F***ing awesome!!! Thank you for all of this

Or how about when the other party in an agreement wants to get you a lawyer to represent your side of it?
Greasy.

It would be nice if this was from a managers perspective.

Do you have contracts that can be downloaded to study and use?

It's "huge & lopsided" but on the flipside, so is the artist's share of income.. 💰💰💰💰💰
