    I recently heard this quote: The hardest addiction to quit is whatever makes you feel normal. Alcohol can increase endorphins, feel good chemicals, and more. It can be addicting when it feels like a friend or like a self medication....but then everything gets way worse and you get so sick when you keep using it.
    We have to find what's missing or how to soothe the pain, to get better. Amino acids, medications, hormone balancing, therapy, whatever it takes. Never give up on getting or staying sober. You can feel happy and healthy without alcohol.

      I absolutely agree with you on that. There were times in my 20s when I felt like I no longer want to drink but because I was surrounded by heavy drinkers including my roommates, that was hard to do. I did do a 30 day challenge but the whole time I was planning my first drink after the break. This was the mid 90s and there were no sober curious communities. There were only AA and DUI schools back then.

    30 days sober here.. many things resonated with me, especially removing drama and focus on your own journey.
    I have questioned my own relation with alcohol for many years and it kinda escalated in 2023 when I started dating a guy who I after a short while realized was an alcoholic and you can imagine there was quite some drama...
    I started drinking more myself to cope with it and just after new year it became too much for me so now he is out of the picture and I can focus on my sobriety and I think it would be impossible if I was still with him.
    Its hard some days but it will get better!

    I'm closing in on almost one year sober....and this is my second attempt at hitting the one year mark. What really resonated with me in this interview was when she mentioned the routine of coming home and having drinks while making dinner and helping kids with homework. That was also the hardest time of every single day for me in the early months of quitting!!! I always had at least 2-3 glasses of wine before dinner. Developing a new "coming home ritual" was absolutely critical to maintaining my sobriety.

    In my late teens throughout my 20s, the lifestyle I participants in compelled you to drink. I mean drank a lot and all the time. I initially started drinking to get through my awkwardness and shyness so I invited those demons in. By the time I was married in my early 30s, alcohol was no longer necessary but I still drank on occasion. Now in my late 50s, I don't like the feeling so I decided to take an indefinite break from drinking.

    That confidence part is so true. The "Liquid Courage". And she made a good point about not needing confidence at home cooking dinner. lol. But I think it's more so the feeling of being more carefree and comfortable in your skin when you're drinking, even though it's temporary.
    I was a shy, quiet kid around people who weren't family. To my family I was an artist, a good dancer, and the kid that would do silly things to make them laugh. At school, I would show a fragment of that side to my friends and become mute to anyone else. One of my older sisters shared that same trait, but hers was a bit more extreme. She still drinks today because of it. I had to force myself out of my shyness because of my childhood dream of performing on stages.

    • @Soberstrong
      @Soberstrong  7 месяцев назад +3

      Liquid courage is such a big thing for a lot of us. It’s so sad. It’s temporary and causes so much more damage just for that little moment of “confidence”. Learning to be confident without, now that is hard work. But it’s so doable! Look at you, you have broken out of your shell it sounds like, doing what you want to do as a child. Thank you so much for the honesty and sharing your story. I have been struggling with weed and alcohol addiction for almost 20 years now. I have previously quit, sometimes even for years but then eventually relapsed. I swear every time you relapse the addiction gets worse. I am now 8 months off of weed and 2 weeks sober from alcohol too. I am learning how to cope with my difficult feelings and my mental health issues. My children are 7, 9 and 10 and I don’t want to set this example for them anymore. They too make comments about my smoking or drinking and things I’ve done. I was always ‘high functioning’ and made excuses to continue. I am going to fight for this freedom, I don’t want to be an addict anymore.

    This was worth the wait. What a fantastic informative interview, Bravo 👏
    your guests' story is a common and familiar one among binge drinkers and alcoholics,
    I had the same experience 2 years ago yesterday when I decided that I can't do this anymore and stopped drinking
    ( and it was 3 years this week that I stopped drinking beer)
    I have also dropped a lot of people from my social circle
    ( and I'm sure that some dropped me) because I'm no longer drinking.
    I have no problem going to restaurants and bars with friends and not drink alcohol. However, I think it made some of them uncomfortable .
    I also, along with exercise and healthy eating, started noticing weight loss as well.
    I also do my best to avoid drama , drama queens & crisis makers and embrace positive health activities and social settings.😂
    I love your guests story, I had some of the same experiences that she & I am sure you have as well, kudos and all the power to her for coming onto your podcast and sharing her story.
    I truly think that there are people out there who are jealous of us because we no longer drink and that we are living happy normal alcohol free lives while they still drink and are repeating unhealthy patterns.
    and in regard to AA I think it benefits many out there who have recently stopped drinking and need support,
    I went to a couple of meetings 20 years ago to support a friend who had recently stopped drinking, I found it to be a bit clicky and there are definitely some toxic people in there who have issues other than alcohol that they should be addressing .
    You're an awesome interviewer Meghan great job as usual 🥰
    I really enjoyed this podcast.
    You worked hard on this one and the results show 😊

      @Soberstrong  7 месяцев назад +2

      Awww thanks!!!
      I love how she is proof that you can JUST DO IT. Like I’ve been saying since my second video (I think). If we want it bad enough, we will do it. You are proof, and once I’m past a year, I’ll be able to say I’m proof also!
      Jealousy is so annoying. Especially when friends are jealous of you. Be done. 😂
      She’s never shared her story, and I feel so honored to have had her on, and open up. She talked herself into it, knowing it would be able to help others. ❤️❤️❤️❤️💪

    • @jamescoderre9595
      @jamescoderre9595 7 месяцев назад +1

      @Megz2.0 Yeah, we should all feel honored that she shared her story. She is definitely proof that if you want to quit alcohol badly enough and save yourself, it can be done,
      unfortunately, we live in a lazy society where many want the results but won't put in the work because people, by nature, feel more comfortable in the familiar and doing what we have done requires going out of the familiar and into unfamiliar uncharted territory,
      it's scary for a lot of people, so they
      Subconsciously decide to remain stuck in the familiar.
      I would have loved to talk to her one on one we had some similar experiences and shared the same options on many things. Maybe it's because we're in a similar age group.
      I can tell she is somewhat of a private person, so it took a lot of strength and being secure within herself to come on the podcast and share her story, it's definitely going to inspire and help other who watch the podcast, what you did by putting this together truly is a gift to many
      and you don't have to wait for a year of sobriety to arrive so that you can deem yourself successful. You're already successful, and I'm really proud of you for what you're slowly achieving, Kudos 😉

    • @Soberstrong
      @Soberstrong  7 месяцев назад +1

So I’m in the process of finding a apartment for me to live , it sucks we separated before over a year and i chose to work it out especially for my kids because we come both from broken homes rooted in alcohol ,but she doesn’t think she has a problem , I vowed to never drink again but she said after that night after the things were said she gave up , such a shame what alcohol has done to our marriage

    The "Advice No One Tells You", is that focusing on "quitting alcohol" is a sure fire recipe for FAILURE! How do I know?...because that was me! I lost count of the number of times I "tried to quit".
    The moment that I looked in the mirror, and got rigorously honest with myself, was the moment I began to recover. My focus on the root problem, "ME", was the catalyst.
    The shovel I had been toting around all those years was the wrong tool. I need "life tools" which i found with other people just like me. My mantra is simple, "Live in the problem, or live in the solution. Those words are the foundation for life in abundance! Peace, Mark 5/8/1994

I don’t really drink anymore, I’m so lucky that since getting my mental health on track and finally having my pain managed with the help of health care professionals. I quit drinking. I’m so lucky that I am not an alcoholic. My father was. I have not abused alcohol (or been drunk) since 2021, I have had a beer, mojito or margarita since then but haven’t had a drink since July! When I heard her say “…cut people off sounds like such a bad thing to say…” I was like… Ehhhhhh…. No it’s not.. it’s actually the most “unselfish” thing anyone can do for themselves and for the ones being “cut off”… It takes a bit of understanding to know what I’m talking about but it’s true.
    I couldn’t watch this interview in its entirety but I got a ton on ideas swirling in regard to what I’m working on… so thanks for doing this.. 🙏

    @Megz2.0 do you think this idea sounds reasonable or controversial, raising the drinking age from 21 to 25? I just think for young people it’s just not worth it at all to even have a few ounces of alcohol, especially when you’re trying to balance assignments,tests, and clubs

    • @Soberstrong
      @Soberstrong  7 месяцев назад +1

      I think that’s a very controversial question, but a good one. I think this world is crazy enough, and I have my thoughts on a lot of age related things…. I really think it is our society. I was drinking at 14/15, age doesn’t matter I don’t think. We are gonna get out hands on it regardless. But I like your view on this!

We can turn into something else as a kid who has no idea what they actually know... I don't know. Age is just a number, and alcohol won't stay out of lives if we are brought up and peer pressured into it. If ya know what i mean ;-)

      Don’t drink! If your goal is not drinking, then have club soda with lime, it’s like you’re drinking but you’re not. Drink a mocktail. You can do it! Your friend should respect the fact as well that you’re making a change in your life for the better.

    Hi Meghan, just need advice please . Been just over 4 months without the drink and I'm struggling. These last few days I've been incredibly low, I suspect it was that greek yoghurt I had a few days ago, dairy. I've been feeling bad before that but not as bad as I have been now. I've noticed a pattern recently felt pretty bad after a pizza, dairy again, something to do with high histamine? So how did you feel after 4 months you mentioned bouts of anger? and what did you do to get through it? Thanks I appreciate how busy you are so will be grateful if you can get back to me.

      Pray.. I’m telling you .. I quit after 22 years of trying to quit. The taste of completely gone. And be gentle on yourself. You are human .. it’s ok to have bad days.. it’s normal ok? Try to get off the internet/Netflix and spend more time outside appreciating the tiny things that have live. Help a stranger.. it brings such joy.. try for a new job that is more challenging.. try to let go of fear.. the praying will help with this.

      @JamesP44 I’ve had many ups and downs, and I think it’s truly part of the process. We are unmasking feelings we haven’t dealt with sober. It’s hard, I know. I’ve been in counseling, which I think helps. Being busy really has helped me also. Focus on the negatives of drinking, and never the so called positives. Try adding more protein into your diet. Reading and journaling. Go to the movies more. I’m with you!! Stay strong 💪

      Thanks for your response again Meghan, you're always good to get back to us and try to help, much appreciated. Keeping busy is hard because my job where I work from home it doesn't count to me because it's a job I can do with my eyes closed. My mind wanders while doing my work kind of thing lol. Apart from that not much to focus on apart from daily chores and the same old stuff on TV. I went for a walk and run in some natural surroundings earlier. That did something. I've decided to go on old medication I was on before, citalopram. Just 1 tablet today has helped already. More protein? Ok might try to, is that good for mental health is it? Yeah journaling I did some of that for a bit a gratitude journal. But didn't do much. Maybe I'll try again.
      I haven't gone to see a movie in so long now and that's part of what makes me as depressed as I am even before quitting alcohol. Sorry to say this but these things made me happy growing up, movies, computer games, music. Now we've entered this depressing era of remakes and it's dead nowadays, not the same anymore. I just want to go back to the 80s/90s. I do say all that but a while ago I got the new Top Gun Maverick and that was really top notch! My unpopular opinion, better than the first, yep I said it lol. Also the new mission impossible dead reckoning was awesome too. Guess at least I've got Mr Cruise to keep me happy for now 😅. Man's 60 but he just performed the biggest stunt ever performed in movie history by any actor apparently in dead reckoning.

      Thanks for your reply too, appreciate your kind words I'll try and get out more. It's winter here in the UK but it's not raining so I went out for a walk and run earlier which did something good. Might go tomorrow again. Always love to help a stranger or do onto others as I would have them do onto me, there was a guy recently with a crutch and looked afraid of crossing the road so I just had him grab my arm and helped him across. I don't get many of those opportunities, but I always want to help others. By the way I have Netflix on while typing this 😅 I know what you're saying though getting out in nature, meeting people all that stuff is better. With being online only restrict myself to positivity now. Don't watch the news. I actually look up positive news you can get.
