  • I entirely intended on becoming an academic when I began my PhD. It's almost exclusively why you would do a PhD; few other career paths require one. But do hold in mind that you might change your mind, or actually be unable to find the rare position you're after.
The one thing I would do different: Plan from the start how this PhD makes you employable. Get transferable skills. Get very, very good at what you do.

Great to see these videos are back. I'm in my third year now and I think you are totally right about checking academic job descriptions and requirements etc. I began doing that a bit this year and it turns out that I have been developing those transferable skills through my very niche Ph.D. focus. I was surprised to see that for a few jobs, I actually met most requirements already (minus things like the required experience)!

I sent in my applications and I'm hoping to hear back in the next couple of weeks. I know I am getting ahead of myself with this video but it's really interesting and I can't help but watch it.

I saw several videos of you tubers about the future of PhD holders. All of u are agree with that it will be a non secure, stressed and hard future. If the future is dark like that So, what is the point? In this case masters is enough to find a job. Or even try to learn a sport or singing or even open a business. Life is short!!! Nobody (for love) intested in scientist.

I am confused about UK salaries. All the salaries that popped up in this video are substantially less than what you would make teaching at a US high school. In the US you would expect to make at least $50,000 as a high school teacher and around $105,000 as a Geology Professor. The UK seems a lot more expensive to live in, and although this would be 87,000 Euro, the salaries you showed were half that. The question is why would anyone be a professor in the UK or what am I missing here?

I don’t think U.K. has high living costs if you are living outside of London. It is pretty affordable, healthcare is almost free, phone bill is cheap 10GBP for 12GB per month (for my plan), my medicine only costs 9GBP. No drinking no party, then the approximate living cost will be around 800 per month (single household).

@@KWHo-gg8ec thank you very much. It felt very expensive the few times I have been, but maybe just because I was doing the touristy things. But for example, your museum's entrance fees were five times more, all your restaurant chains were more. But I understand what you are saying, the pay is less in UK because it is cheaper to live there and the govt pays for more. And, the wages for professors are in line with what most professionals would make. For example, in the US a starting accountant would make about $60,000, a seasoned accountant would make about $130,000 and a starting accounting professor would make about $150,000 and a seasoned professor around $225,000.

@@Brockdorf I am sorry about that. But if you live here for longer, you will know that most museums are free to visit or sometimes they offer discounts. I have never been to USA so I am not quite sure how much it costs to have a meal at restaurants. But I think it is 25-30% service fee. more or less the same as the ones in the UK. You won't find SUPER large portion sizes at McDonald. I do agree that salary is lower than in the UK. But salary is adjusted based on the general living costs of the population. For example, people working in London generally have higher salary becaz the rental cost is MUCH higher. Same concepts apply in this case, there are more expenses in the US so the salary will be higher.
