I got the strongest item ever in hypixel uhc, this could potentially be a part of I played 100 uhcs here's what happened. Maybe not but this is Ultra hardcore minecraft, pretty much a battle royale, so its not survival like other hardcore minecraft series.

I'll be honest, speaking as a latest version player, shields are kinda meh at best in the latest version, yeah they block 100% of attack damage but all you have to do in order to make them completely useless is jump through the person and hit their back, or get piercing on your crossbow. In fact in UHC kit, which is my main kit for the latest version, I tend to use a lava bucket in my off hand instead of a shield, and in kits like Lifesteal I'll put webs in my off hand because that's very fair and balanced
TL;DR shields get too much attention from 1.8 players (IMO)
and also swords are so much better than axes it isn't even close
