Naval Group Launches ‘Lorraine’, the Final FREMM Frigate for the French Navy

- Naval Group launched the FREMM frigate "Lorraine" on November 13. It is the second of two air-defence frigates known as FREMM DA and the final FREMM for the French Navy.

The FREMM DA Lorraine was launched from the covered construction dock at the shipyard in Lorient, Brittany.
The French Minister of Armed Forces, the Chief of Staff of the French Navy as well as Naval Group's CEO alongside employees from the Lorient site took part in the launching ceremony.
Lorraine is the tenth and final FREMM frigate built by Naval Group and the eighth one for the French Navy.
The shipbuilder produced six anti-submarine warfare FREMMs for the Marine Nationale known as the Aquitaine class plus two Air Defence variants, Alsace and Lorraine.
In addition, two FREMM frigates were exported: One to the Royal Morrocan Navy and another one to the Egyptian Navy.
Lorraine‘ sistership, Alsace, was launched in April 2019 and started her sea trials last month. Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Naval Group still expects to deliver the two vessels on time to the customer: First half of 2021 for Alsace and November 2022 for Lorraine.
Following the launch of its last FREMM, Naval Group will gradually transition towards the FDI program, the next generation of frigates for the French Navy.
The steel-cut ceremony of the first FDI (Defense and Intervention Frigate) took place in October 2019. The keel of the frigate will be laid in the covered construction dock in November 2021.
Meanwhile two Gowind corvettes “for an undisclosed export customer” will take place and be assembled in the construction dock in Lorient. These vessels are set to be delivered in late 2022 / early 2023.

Pourtant la Greece a vu son économie repartir après la crise économique. Cette situation ne va pas durer et l'Union Européenne ne peut pas accepter que la Greece se fasse annexer par la Turquie, cela enverra un message fort au reste du monde que l'UE n'est pas une puissance qui émerge et protège ses citoyens.

Why is France developing the FDI Frigates instead of building more FREMMs? Is it a cheaper class intended to fill the gap or is it a more advanced and capable class?

beautiful vessel - in today's Navy large ships aren't needed with today's technology small frigates can hold their own!
From a combat perspective this is true. But size does not increase cost that much and makes the vessels more flexible in the long term when it comes to adding new capabilities like unmanned submersible's and UAVs. Their missile capacity is also very small considering it is split between air defense and land attack.
@@Weakeyedominant great comment too. While it is cinventional wisdom that size doesnt increase cost that much or linearly, recent history does not seem to bear this out. Even frigates seem to cost a ton. I guess its a matter of doctrine. Does a nation like France realistically need a bigger warship than this, i. E a destroyer? More succintly will frigates make destroyers obsolete in the future?
So the Marine Nationale is now dropping their French-made 100mm guns in favor of the Italian-made 76mm one?
They did so already with the Horizon Class, they carry 2 76 mm guns

The italian Oto-Melara with Leonardo company in the last decade created a new ammunition called Vulcano with 20km+ of range and capable for destroy:
UAV, Aircraft, ships, subsonic/super sonic missiles and can hit ground targets.
Also thanks to the Strales/Davide system path in the Torret.
The old version called "Super Rapido" (the guns presents on the Horizon Class) have a range of 8km because the system dont have Strales/Davide system and the new ammunition vulcano but are good.

@@rafalef42 même base et les états Unis lors d'excercices navals ont décerné à la frégate et son équipage le certificat d'excellence, pour la frégate italienne elle sera fabriqué sur place voilà pourquoi ils ont remporté le contrat
