    I would not discount the idea that Sweeney actually killed Odin instead of Balar. An important concept in the books is the idea that there are many different versions of each god, depending on your specific beliefs (hence the many different versions of Jesus at Easters house). Mr. Wednesday is the AMERICAN Odin, but if you went to Scandinavia, you would meat a completely different version of Odin. In the context of the show, it is plausible that a version of Odin onec tried to invade Ireland and was defeated by Sweeney, but the Scandinavian Odin is still alive in Scandinavia, and eventually sends another version of himself to America. Balar may even be a slightly modified version of Odin, considering that they are both one-eyed gods of war.

      That's exactly what happened. Remember that Lugh in irish mythology is the irish equivelent of Mercury and, perhaps more importantly, Loki from the norse mythology. He shares a lot of symbolic similarities with Baldur too.

      Excellent! Totally possible, Vikings spreading, bringing their gods to Ireland, Lugh fiting off ALL the invading hordes of gods... I could get behind that.
      Though, if that's the case, maybe that means Sweeney isn't totally dead either, as another version of himself could come back... Keeps it interesting :-)

      I would agree im irish and there's lots of viking archaeology here and dublin was a made a major hub by them .. the name comes from dubh-linn -black water

    I think shadow can retrieve the spear since Sweeney explained to shadow how he draws his coins from the hoard.

    Not so sure Odin is different from Balor. One of the earliest invasions of Ireland was the Viking invasion that occurred at the same time as they invaded northern England. They conquered the region around Dublin and turned that port into a major trading post for slaves. They never managed to conquer the whole island, and eventually a war between them and the native Irish broke out. The Irish won, and took back their holdings. Check out the Extra Credits channel who did a video on it.

    Anyone else catch that Horus and Set are joining the battle!? That was such a big highlight for me as I was wondering where all the other Gods from each pantheon are.
    And that it's totally possible Shadow will be able to get Gungnir back with his own "sun" powers (once/if he discovers them)?

    Sweeney has been pushed away by Odin for quite some time now. Sweeney even states to Odin, "you keep giving my place away." His place by Odin's side perhaps.

    Wednesday earlier mentioned that people and gods killed by his spear were sacrifices to him. So it may be that Sweeny counted as a sacrafice, and cant return.

      Excellent call-back there Le Sigh! That does sound familiar, and would totally make sense. BUt last episode seemed very clear that suicide is the one death can't come back from, as they are self sacrifices. So there may still be hope (though slim) for our favorite Leprechaun :-)

    Sweeney’s decline was the lack of faith. No one prays to him and his old name is forgotten. The coin allows him to live on as a “fairy” folk. More specifically a leprechaun king. Even today names like Odin and Zeus, Hercules and Thor, are remembered, but not Lugh and Sétanta. Cu Chullain. In a show of forgotten god’s, Sweeney is he forgotten of the forgotten. Without the coin, time, luck, despair, and a lack of faith descended upon him into madness.

    Fear not fans of Sweeney, remember Laura has her potion two drops of blood infused with love. She carries him on her shoulders at the end of the episode. And also has the coin contained within her chest which we know brings life to the Dead. Please bring Sweeney back so he can have his battle mother trucker deserves it Erin go bra Irish for life

    It is sad that Sweeney died, he is also one of my favourite characters but I'm also happy that didn't end up with a pseudo romantic story with the Dead Wife.
    But I agree that it can go either way with Sweeney: Mama-Ji said Laura has the power to destroy inside her and the Girl with the Sight told in his future a "Dead woman's bauble Would seal his fate" meaning his Dead? Or in a "romantic" twist (yuck) she Would do some kind of sacrifice and take a drop of blood from him and him back his coin and in a twist of luck been betrothed to her (poor Sweeney)

    • @DWJaques
      @DWJaques  5 лет назад +1

      Good points. I don't so much mind a Sweeney/Laura relationship, but it certainly hasn't developed really over the past 2 seasons, so it would feel totally fake to move in that direction at this point. I get Sweeney having a thing for her, be it remorse for killing her or a remembrance of someone from his past that looked like her, but he's gotten nothing back from her at all, and romance really takes two.

    Read me out on this theory about Bilquis's sermon.
    In Black Literature, especially those produced during the Harlem Renaissance, having an experience with the Holy Ghost was the equivalent of having a sexual orgasm. So Bilquis in the church and reading from the Song of Solomon (which some think was inspired by her) seemed like a total shout out and appropriate.

    I think that all of gods are versions of Wednesday for an example Mr Nancy's day is Wednesday in his tradition. Therefore he is synchronized with Odin.

    • @BigHenFor
      @BigHenFor 5 лет назад +3

      Syncretised rather than synchronised.

    • @BigHenFor
      @BigHenFor 5 лет назад +3

      Anansi and Odin are completely different BTW. Anansi tells stories, but is not the strongest god in his pantheon. Odin is the All Father in his, the God of Death, and a seeker of knowledge. Syncreticsm can be erroneous at times. And no, Odin is Odin. He's all about war and death, and avoiding death. That is why Odin was not asked to preside over anything but war and death. Anansi in contrast is about history and culture, something Odin has no interest in.

    • @DWJaques
      @DWJaques  5 лет назад +2

      Interesting theory. That would be quite a twist to find, ultimately, that Odin is warring with himself :-) Another commenter brought up the idea that there are multple "versions" of the same god, and that might be in play here too. Though I keep thinking back to Ibis' "Stories are truer than the truth" line. This show is all about the power of belief!

      Actually, Lugh was definitely syncretised with Mercury by the Roman, who was also syncretised with Odin, so you’re not far off

    You should wear a T-Shirt that reflects what the video is about. The Rebel symbol doesn’t work, something green or Irish would have been better.
    Anyways, the review is great.

      Thanks! Yeah, I usually try to wear a show-relatable shirt, but no American Gods one yet. So I just went into my random nerd drawer 😉
