I've actually been authorized to carry these signs (taking them is normally a highway traffic act offence, make sure you have the paperwork avalaible for inspection lol) as I'm a project coordinator for a contractor doing mainline roadworks. They are MASSIVE. If you think the signs are big, just wait until you see how big a traffic or street light is!
I love how this channel often covers questions we might have wondered (or maybe even hadn't occurred to us) but not known the answers to, and gives us a peak into how it's made/done. Such as your videos on the tugboat loggers, cranberry farm, skytrain etc. Reminds me of the TV show "How It's Made". Very cool!
Years ago, when I lived in Sydney (Australia), my father worked for the Department of Main Roads. He was a guillotine operator and would cut enormous signs for the side of outback roads. He would tell me of some of the unpronounceable and mysterious locations mentioned on roads. They would be produced, sent out to the local DMR office in the hope they knew where these places were, and where the sign should be located. Thanks for a great video. I imagined there would be created in a huge factory, not in something more than an normal office.
I really don't know how I lived my life without DownieLive taking me to all these interesting places before I hit the subscribe button. I *SO* want to go along. I will be there with you.
I have a Silhouette cutter at home - not as fancy as her machine but every time my stickers cut correctly first time makes my heart a little extra happy lol.
Man I love these Vancouver (or GVA) videos because whenever I walk past stuff that you've covered, I always think about it and makes my life here much more interesting.
That's the kind of short, practical and informative video I love. I guess not a lot of people around the world knows how thoese panels are done. Do more like that (in a playlist 'how to...') where we can learn something and meet the people who do it. It's very interesting.
That was very cool and informative! Never really thought about where or how they make street signs! Guess I'll be looking at them in a whole new way now! Thanks Mike!
Well there you go! Another fascinating behind the scenes demonstration of something we take for granted on the road while travelling. Now let's see you get into a Rail Dispatcher's office for one of the main line operators. That could be a challenge for you.
Never thought I’d wanna see how street signs are made lol. But let me tell yeah! If you’re going to teach us something I’m gonna watch it. Gosh you make everything so fun 😂
What a cool printer!!! And it's soooooo satisfying seeing those signs being printed!!!! Thanks for today's video, Mike!! After today's video, I wonder how the staff feel whenever they see the road signs they printed got vandalized 🥺☹💔
I moved to Canada from Tennessee. I tell Southerners that any place you even think about parking has a No Parking sign. Thanks for confirming the elephant in the room!
Very cool! They used to have a small sign shop at the Grey County roads department shop that my dad used to work at in Ontario. I got to see the shop, but I can't remember if I ever did get to see them making the signs.
Good one Mike. Have you thought about doing one about the Alaska Highway? I worked for a trucking company that opened up to Alaska. I was a breakdown specialist and I have to say,,, it was a.challenge. Remote, beautiful and dangerous during winter. . Just a thought? Thanks man. I really enjoy your videos.
Very nice.. I first found your channel when you were doing all those Vancouver tours. I was going to take a train ride across the US, and was looking at your train ride videos. Then you went off the air to do those longer videos. I still havent watched them all. But I like your how its made series...or a day in the life of type of videos. Too bad you cant work in one of your famous shower scenes in thses videos.....grrrrrrrrowwwwwl. (Just teasing). Anyway I love your stuff.
1. Remember this song? ruclips.net/video/Z1Q7cP3ij5g/видео.html 2. The big UV printer works more like an inkjet printer rather than a laser. Inkjets and other "dot matrix" printers pass across the page or other media once for each line, printing one line at a time. Lasers write the image onto a drum, which prints an entire page at once. 3. IDKWYGNBIKIBTWY.
I came here to watch the new video but also just to leave that idea here... :-) I was browsing for flight simulator open to public and I found one in Richmond,BC. I thought about your channel at the same time and thought that could make something nice to watch here. You drove a train, bus, cars and boat why not trying a Boeing 737 but in a real simulator. XD I found good information on... I can't write the website here, youtube keeps flagging my comment. I would like to see you landing that without help ;-P
that's some really impressive equipment! but from my European perspective the no-parking sign design is really small and fussy, with those little arrows and text! and without folded edges (very North-American!), it's no wonder that the last sign shown out in the wild had bent... poor thing :)
About to do an interview for an apprenticeship in a sign shop, just here for insight into the process. Anybody have any impressive statements or questions for me to ask the employer?
ppl in the rest of the world "we want to sit in the front of firetrucks and trains" ppl in Canada "we want to sit in the front of snow plows and Zamboni's!!!!"- Downie live 2022
Fun fact: I'm from Germany, and after I came to Canada for the first time, it took me 8 months to realize that the sign actually tells you "NO STOP" I always thought this was just a made up sign used in Canada.
Only Mike could make street sign printing interesting in a video...dude...how are you this creative and fun?

Traffic lights are huge

It's amazing how large street signs really are.
I love how cheeky and funny you are in this video Mike 😆😎😉

As someone who has stickers for their channel, the part at 4:21 was extremely cool 💜

Hard to wait.
Amazing process and equipment! Thank you for showing the process!
"Signs, signs, everywhere signs" I think that was a song from the 70's !
That machine really does make it all so simple !
Thanks Mike ☺️

Never thought I’d wanna see how street signs are made lol. But let me tell yeah! If you’re going to teach us something I’m gonna watch it. Gosh you make everything so fun 😂
Your tour made me curious. Now I'll have to take a closer look at the city signs here.
What a cool printer!!! And it's soooooo satisfying seeing those signs being printed!!!!
Thanks for today's video, Mike!! After today's video, I wonder how the staff feel whenever they see the road signs they printed got vandalized 🥺☹💔
Great Video Mike. Thank You for sharing your information on sign making.
Never Have I Ever: Been more excited to see a video than now.

I moved to Canada from Tennessee. I tell Southerners that any place you even think about parking has a No Parking sign. Thanks for confirming the elephant in the room!
I did not know that. How neat! I loved seeing this. Interesting. Exciting.
That’s so cool 😎👍. Just learned something new today
Something to learn about the street signs. Thank you for providing a nice video!
Very cool! They used to have a small sign shop at the Grey County roads department shop that my dad used to work at in Ontario. I got to see the shop, but I can't remember if I ever did get to see them making the signs.
Very nice, Mike 👍👍 Thanks! Where are you going next?!?!
Thank you for showing us 🙂
Thanks, Mike. It’s interesting to see the process to make the signs. Burnaby “has its act together.”
Thanks Mike. Very interesting. Often wondered how those signs were done. Now we know thanks to you.
Wow this video was unexpected, I love it! As someone who enjoys metalwork Iam just drooling over all that fresh steel stock they have to work with :)
Wow great Vid 😁😁😁

Another banger! Thanks Mike.
Verrrrry cool video, Mike. Thanks!
What a creative video idea!
Now I have an urge to carry some extra little vinyl arrows and randomly apply them to signs just to mess with people's minds🙃😉 Kidding!
Great video on how the signs are made ❤️❤️

I’ve always wondered too Mike. Thanks for this episode.
Thanks Mike!!
Much more interesting than I exspected
That's sick! I'm going to see if I can learn about where they do that in the Toronto area!
This video was too short, Mike! I need some new adventures! Have you heard of the BC tourism challenge going on?
This lady has taken arts and crafts to a whole new level
That was interesting 🤔. Thanks Mike 😉🙄
I learned something useful today. Thanks✨
That was cool.

Simple but cool
"I have always wondered, and now we know". - This could be the end of every informative video on this channel. :)
Glad you think so!
This is so cool!
Great Video!
If you think that’s a big printer, you should come film the process of creating flags, at The Flag Shop!
You made me double check my clock cuz it's not 9AM yet! 😅😆
Those No Stopping signs must be a Canadian thing. I have never seen one of those before.
That's much more manual than I expected
Your curiosity inspires some interesting content.

Come on Mike weren't you just a little tempted to have them print a DownieLive Street Street Sign? Haha!
Hahaha... I guess I thought about it... HAHA
Hey Mike, what car do you drive?? It looks awesome!
That's so cool
Very interesting.
WAS THAT WINDOWS 8. also I live in Burnaby and no stoppings are everywhere.
Like "hockey table"
Michael Downie looking at the audience after they get the new sign: “Let me ‘il-laminate’ you.”

Wasn't expecting the signs to be very big.
omg so cool
Same as in Japan!
(squints at screen)
...are you driving a JDM Pajero Io?
Sure am!

This was meant to be commented on being a Zambaoni driver for a day
Now you know where all the money goes when you get a ticket, to all that printer ink for the damn street signs.
Fun fact:

I always thought this was just a made up sign used in Canada.
I want a giant hallow Yugioh card printed on one of those metal sheets
No stopping? You mean the red and blue circle with slash lol
No, he means the sign he was talking about. Obviously, different countries have different signs.
( STOP ) ✋️ Michael, this is way cool. Thanks
You think your printer makes a lot of noise and then you meet a UV Printer.
Wow!!;!
Well not completely that simple… some important detail left out when applying the vinyl and laminate. Good video though 👍
