I went to Barcelona last year and fell in love with the city. I really want to learn Catalan, and have been having a hard time finding a good alphabet guide. This is perfect. Thank you so much for your work.
Hola Bee H and thanks for your comment! I'm glad you found that useful. Stay tuned: I'll soon be uploading a video on how to pronounce vowels in Catalan (we have 8 sounds) :)
It seems that you pronounce the J in two ways. The first time at 2:30 as the simple sound, the way you explain it, but the second time, at 2:42 you add a d sound in front of it, so it sounds like the J in the English word 'judge'. I have heard it that way by several speakers, also '(d)jove'.
the funny thing about being a native speaker of english with B and V sound is that, while there is no distinction, my brain kinda makes one itself and sometimes i can hear a distinct v sound. brains truly are interesting things lol.
Just found you. I love the way you explain it and the pace at which you teach it. Although I know how to speak some Catalan, I never knew the name of a lot of the letters. I just Subscribed :) D'ara abans et trovo a youtube.
Moltes gràcies, Nan 11, pel teu comentari tan amable i sincer! Puc preguntar d'on ets (per curiositat)? :)
Okay so i'm starting to fall in love with catalán but the not-so-funny part seems to be the writing; I mean I understand the written form quite well but I couldn't come up with the spelling myself, if that makes sense. I guess it's only a matter of practice but so far it's not really intuitive, unlike spanish for example. Do you have any idea how to tackle this issue?
That's right, Catalan is a bit more difficult than Spanish. As it happens in French, you don't always pronounce all the vowels the way they are written. As everything in life, is all about getting used to it! I gave an overview at the How to pronounce the vowels video :)
Hola Maria. Buenisimo tu canal.
In Spanish I was always taught the the V has a harsher sound (top teeth on bottom lips) and B has softer sound (lips together). Guess it's different in Catalan?
Thank you for your videos about pronunciation. I am commenting after watching both the alphabet and the vowel videos. I found Catalan pronunciation difficult before watching your video since it was difficult to decide the base pronunciation of the vowels, i.e before putting the accents on the vowels. How do we pronounce “ll”? Thanks to your videos, I think I’m finally getting there.
No, we don't have that rule, but you also have to take into account that in terms of vowels, you don't always pronounce what you get (as it happens in Spanish). Here's more info: ruclips.net/video/DYw0AvGMDEk/видео.html
Hi just wanted to say thanks for making these videos at least! And I have a ques..is there any good book from library to borrow for catalàn? I would really appreciate your answer!
Hola Sam, great to hear that! Each library has its own selection of books. Not sure if you are based in Catalonia but I would recommend that you go to the library itself and browse for books that would suit your level :)
Bona vespre Maria!
Hola Florian, molt, molt bona pregunta!
Haha good point! "Jo" is a Catalan word and therefore it pronounces J the Catalan way while "Juan" is a Spanish name and the J sounds Spanish. In Catalan it would be "Joan" (J sounding like in "jo") :)
Seems you have not made a new video on this channel at least, for a few years. I hope all is well with you. I'd like to learn the proper pronunciations of vowels and their accents if you would be so kind. An E is not just an E sound, when there are visible or even invisible accent marks È, É or i, ì, í or even ï. Could you explain with example words and sounds please. Thank you.
Hi Maria....how do I get in touch with you. I am preparing to start a Catalan class and looking for additional means to study the language. Do you have a school?
Hola Uzma! Thanks for your comment :) I'll be uploading another video next week, so definitely worth passing by again to learn a few more bits in Catalan.
Great question! It's because the last "E" is non-stressed. Check the video on how to pronounce the vowels for an explanation :) ruclips.net/video/DYw0AvGMDEk/видео.html
I wouldn't say that z sounds like s. It's a problem for native speakers of spanish that doesnt have the "z"sound. And in English, "it is" should be pronounced "it iz" like zzzz. Anyway, great video. I think that catalan is much influenced by spanish, but it's good that it has a larger inventory of sounds. I havenr been able to find videos of people from france or italy speaking catalan, are there any big differences in accent or other?
Hola! Without having specific academic knowledge on phonetics and phonology, I would say Italian might be more similar (although their intonation and "melody" is fairly different). For some people Catalan sounds a bit like Portuguese - there are some similar sounds.
I realise it is not the easiest sound but you can definitely give it a go! But don't worry about it too much, you can do your best and I'm sure you'll be understood :)

What is the correct pronounciation of "W" in Catalan? Is it a semi- vowel "w" like English ("wine') or a consonant like "v" (German "wein")?
Like the English pronunciation.
