  • On a whim, I made a video a while back comparing some Doepfer filters. It was surprisingly popular (for me, at least), and people wanted a better version, with the resonance cranked up. Two and a half years later, I'm finally delivering the goods!

    This is the best filter comparison video I've found! Lots of different filter topologies played musically and in the same context in a way that demonstrates the different cutoff, resonance, and distortion available from each. Thank you!

    0:15 Synthacon 0:23 Diode (Putney); 0:32 TB-303 0:40 MS-20; 0:49 SEM; 0:58 Wasp; 1:07 A-108 Moog 1:49 Fairlight chip. (Some timestamps I made for myself so I can compare between two specific ones.)

    I really like the diode one because it is a nice distorted rubber bandy sound. The 303 filter is awesome sounds close to Roland TB-303 filter -- I think of throaty frogs when I hear it. The SEM filter makes me think of smooth JELLY sound.. love it. Wasp is crazy, distorted but doesn't have very good highs though. The A-108 is my favorite I think. Fairlight is WILD and awesome too. I want them all except for the MS-20 and Synthacon filters -- the MS-20 doesn't make any sense to me and the Synthacon is muddy sounding.

    • @TransistorSounds

      Thanks! I can't remember much of anything I'm afraid, but knowing me, it's probably Stepper Acid's gate → a Doepfer A-142 (an A-140 would suffice too, but I have A-142s mostly for drums) → the filter. Make sure the cutoff point's good for the tail end of each note first, the lowest point for no voltage, then plug in / turn up the dial for the CV and get the start of the note right, the highest point for maximum voltage. I do the same with accents, that's why my unaccented notes are MIDI velocity 1 instead of 50. It's also why I always use the filter's CV 2 instead of CV 1 input, so I can control both ends of the range separately. I guess you might call me a control freak or detail oriented. 😅

    Wow, finally the filter comparison I was looking for -- exactly the type of music and filters I wanted to hear. I love you! These sound awesome! I want a few of these; send them all to a mixer and switch between them during a techno performance!

    • @TransistorSounds
      @TransistorSounds  2 года назад

      Yeah, you could totally use an A-150 voltage controlled switch with Stepper Acid's accent output, so accented notes get routed through a different filter... or, say, a different steepness in the A-108 filter... There's definitely lots of tasty options there!

      @@TransistorSounds I am going to look into all the TD-3 mods to see if I can add some jacks and knobs to it. Like accent out, etc.. Would be nice if I could access the TD-3's filter in and out, along with the accent out. I don't know how well it can sync with eurorack / pamela's new work out. But I have a TD-3 anyways. I'll have to look nto stepper acid, it looks awesome!

      @@TransistorSounds Another thing I could do is perhaps use my MPC One since it has 8 cv/gates out. I could use one track for the sequence cv out and then another track for accent gate out. Then I can just put the right notes in right places for where I want accents in the sequence. I like the step sequencer on the MPC oen fine, usign the pads to turn on/off the notes/accents/gates at whatever beats.

    How does the A-120 compare to the A-108. Was interested in the A-120 because it was supposed to be Moog ladder filter type, but so is the larger A-108. The A-108 sounds so good in this btw (along with several others).

  • @jenniferw8963
    @jenniferw8963 2 года назад

    Hey Zoë, you don't by any chance have the Behringer 904A do you? I wonder how it compares to the A-108 and A-120. I was going to get it but I didn't like that it expects 5V in and outputs only 5V but I guess I can attenuate and amplify with it if it sounds closest to the Moog Model 15.

    • @TransistorSounds
      @TransistorSounds  2 года назад

      I do, but I (OK, Nina) modded it to make it 1967-era style. As with the other Boog modules, they sound great but they're a bit fiddly to use, as Moog's modulars predate the idea of putting a mini mixer in the VCF and VCA, so I've had to pair them with a 995 attenuator.
      There should be a video coming out later this week which has my 904A all over its soundtrack...

      @@TransistorSounds Hey have you seen the TD-3-MO? New version of TD-3 by Behringer. It has Accent Out .. lot of extra jacks. Accent IN, Slide In as well. It also has filter out. Wondering what you think of it with respect to eurorack integration.

  • @jenniferw8963
    @jenniferw8963 2 года назад

    Hey Zoë, I was reading the Behringer Crave manual and you can use the ASSIGN output jack to send the sequencers ACCENT trigger! I really like the sequencer on this -- it's a copy of the mother 32. And you can set an accent for each step. Then assign ACCENT OUT to the ASSIGN output jack :) Then I could use that with the Doepfer 150-1 as you say to trigger accents on a different filter (say the wasp). So would the Behringer Crave be able to do everything the Behringer TD-3 and Stepper Acid does (minus nudge feature). It does swing. The sliding is just a modulation of CV signal right? That's sent out of the sequencer via CV to the oscillator?

    • @TransistorSounds
      @TransistorSounds  2 года назад +1

      As far as sliding goes, most sequencers based on the TB-303 simply send a gate signal to be sent to an external slew limiter along with the pitch CV. Stepper Acid has its own variable slew limiter built in, so sends an already-slewed pitch CV ready for an oscillator.
      While I'm not familiar with the Mother 32 or Crave, the main advantage of Stepper Acid is that you can see what you're doing with its display, and build up a sequence while it's playing, either playing it live or detaching its read/write heads to step sequence live, while it's looping. Same result as with other sequencers, but a quicker and more pleasant journey to get there.

I wanted teh A-108 but it's too deep at 75mm. I dunno how the A-120 compares to the A-108, but I am buying a Behringer 904A to start to see how it sounds.

      Yeah, the Wasp filter's pretty nuts, as you might expect from something called a Wasp by the Electronic Dream Plant. 😊 I think I prefer the sound of the 904A clone to the A-108, it's just not as versatile without the slope options. Both are smooth as! I haven't heard an A-120, but I've heard people say the A-108 is much nicer, so it sounds like you made a solid choice with the 904A.
