I say Death to Smoochy is his ultimate train-wreck comedic role. Even as much as I love Good Morning Vietnam and Dead Poets Society, Rainbow Randolph was pure humor rather than seriousness through tragedy. Robin being serious is less believable for me, who grew up on his comedy specials. He was a maniac.
I used to watch this movie after my parents divorced and after my dad died.
It would always make me wish I could rewind time.
My parents divorced when I was 7, 6 years later my dad died when I was 13. My mom and step dad separated when I was 30, 5 years later my stepdad died when I was 35.

Originally the characters were going to get back together at the end, but Robin Williams and Sally Field argued against that as it would give kids with divorced parents in real life false hope
That’s true but also, Hollywood was peddling this disgusting shit. Too many times women always wanna divorce, and the courts are always in their favor. No wonder so many people are single these days because it’s all about what one partner can get from another one, it’s never about trying to be an actual relationship.
It also helps that Miranda's new boyfriend Stu wasn't a villain. As it should be noted that originally he was in the old script. But the director changed this, as he wanted to reassure audiences that the family will be fine, and not taken advantage of, even without Daniel there. Therefore, the script changed Stu’s dialogue to have him only insult Daniel by calling him a loser (which, in hindsight, he probably heard that from Miranda).
Therefore Stu serves more as a foil, not a villainous one, but more of what Daniel realizing that Stu's everything Miranda actually wanted, not him.
For all the times Daniel says that Miranda and the kids need him, he ignores the fact that his behavior isn’t what they need. The truth of the matter is, HE NEEDS THEM, more than they need him.
This is one of the all time family classics, and imo Robin's best movie. It's truly heartfelt and funny, with just enough seriousness to make it hit home for kids and adults. A true cinimatic masterpiece.

No, no, Magy. That's not what this movie is about. It's about putting the _family_ back together, not the _marriage._ Stuart's a good man and Miranda has moved on, romantically. The ideal character growth for Daniel is to become a good _father._

Further development in the story that puts Daniel and Miranda back together would undermine the point of this movie. At the beginning, Daniel and Miranda, between them, had both a marriage and a family. The events of the movie lead to the end of the marriage and the rest of the events in the movie revolved around Daniel and Miranda (though more Daniel) learning how to coparent. The point is that there's no reason a husband and wife who fall out of love with each other can't continue to get along with any _kids_ they've had, together.

This movie is an absolute classic, I remember watching this on VHS tape I was a kid. I watched it so many times it wore the tape out. after all these years this movie still holds up!
"Mrs. Doubtfire" is a true classic and one of my favorites. It is bitter-sweet for me as someone that grew up as the late, great, Robin Williams was rising up. He truly was the g.o.a.t. (greatest of all time) and even the other brilliant actors say that. Robin' mind was so powerful; he was so highly intelligent, and his mind worked super fast for spur-of-the-moment responses, comedy, and even serious acting.
I love it with all my heart. But knowing he is gone and seeing him in movies does have a price on my older heart. And me at almost fifty now, and all those years that have melted away and gone by so fast. As Bob Seger sang: "Twenty years; where'd they go?" I should still be a boy in the eighties yet. It should not be 2024. Fly high, Robin Williams.

Yes, Mrs Doubtfire is his most popular and iconic movie.
Knowing some people that have separated parents, they all are very happy a movie like this exists where the parents don't get together. it's good to know that they are seen. Of course it was Robins who said he wouldn't do the movie if the parents got back together. The man was and still is a global treasure.
One of the too rare familial comedies about divorce that didn't end up with the parents getting back together, which is actually much healthier for children of divorced parents, IMHO.
Another good one that fits those criteria is the french comedy "Génial, Mes Parents Divorcent" which to be honest, hasn't aged as well as this one. But can still be enjoyed, I believed, provided it's replaced in its context (France, in the early 90's, when divorce barely started to boom, and thus still had a lot of prejudice amongst people, both adults and kids), and that has the very good point to depict kids that felt like real kids, who fight, who swear, who are interested in grown up things normally forbidden to them, etc...
Robin Williams was a genius! He was a great comedian and comedic actor! Mrs Doubtfire was one of his best. He has many great movies and I hope you get to watch more to fully appreciate his work! I recommend "Dead Poet Society" and "Patch Adams" for now. Thanks Magy ❤️💛

Robin Williams is one of those rare souls that can make you laugh and cry equally as hard in the same film. He was a force. My Mom looked exactly like Sally Field when this came out as a kid and my parents were getting divorced. This hit hard and still does in a sense. "It was a run by fruiting!" 😂

Fun fact the scene where Daniel knocked over the mask and it falls out into the street needed 50 takes to get right which was then followed by a hilarious unscripted moment when a large pile of icing fell into the social workers tea because the temperature on set was very hot and caused robins face to melt but he didn't miss a beat and decided to just roll with it while staying in character
Mrs. Doubtfire is one of my favorite movies, R.I.P. Robin Williams one of the best comedy actors of all time and my favorite along with Jim Carrey.

Death to Smoochy is another great one with him as a villain. Also has Danny Davito (who directs as well), starring Ed Norton as Smoochy. About a disgraced has-been childrens tv host (Williams) trying to take out his replacement, the genuinely good and honest Smoochy (Ed Norton) in the hopes that it would get his show back.

Oddly enough right before he died, Robin Williams signed on to do a legacy sequel, I can't help wondering what the plot would have been because "Mrs. Doubtfire" is such a self-contained story I don't how you could do a sequel to it.
One scene I really liked, was when Miranda was speaking horribly about Danny in front of the kids, and got pulled up short, when he made her realize she was hurting the kids. My Dad never once said anything negative about his first wife, in front of me. His first wife saw no reason to follow suit, and routinely ran him down, right to my face. There's one of many very good reasons I haven't spoken to her in nearly twenty years.
It wasn't hot. He said he was allergic to pepper earlier. So there ya go.

It's a pity that loneliness, depression, tragic fate haunted the vulnerable Robin Williams since childhood and ended with the actor's suicide. Temporary salvation was working in the cinema, to distract himself and please the audience with his talent.
I recommend the author to make a reaction to the remake of the film "Insomnia" (2002) from Christopher Nolan (Inception, Interstellar) in an unusual role for Robin Williams.
The ending is more realistic and better tbh. In the beginning and when Miranda was talking about why the marriage fell apart shows that there will be no reconciliation of Miranda and Daniel. Miranda’s reason to get a divorce was VALID and she had every right to separate if she did not like the person she was around her husband/family. It truly takes a toll to always be the serious one and to also be the one who has a consistent job/career. It’s obvious that Daniel does not have job security, so it is up to Miranda. That’s why she was able to get full custody of the children. The whole point of this movie is for Daniel to realize that he has to be more aware and pay attention to what is truly going on. He did not notice how miserable and sad Miranda was and continued to be the cool dad, while she works all the time and does not get that fun time with her kids. She ends up having to be the grumpy and strict parent, which she obviously did not want to be..she wants to be able to be a good mom too. But Daniel was not helping her on that end and could not keep a job. He avoids serious conversations as we saw earlier in the movie. He did not even remember Miranda’s bday. 😅
So I get why Miranda was just so done with everything and wants to start over/a new beginning. Also, Stuart is a good guy and treated the kids very nicely. But I understand why you wanted to root for Daniel, but again for me..I think he was just being petty because he’s the new guy in not only Miranda’s life, but another father figure to the kids. So he felt threatened, him trying to sabotage their relationship was not to get back with Miranda. It was because he did not want him to get closer with the kids.
In the end, they have a better understanding of each other. They found out how to co-parent properly and be happy for each other.
Robin Williams spent 5 hours everyday in makeup to put on the Mrs. Doubtfire costume. It was so good that he would actually go out in public just to keep checking to make sure that people wouldn't know or recognize that it was him.
I'm very glad that Stu wasn't made into a villain. As he really didn't deserve the treatment Daniel gave him. I mean, aside from calling him a loser (Which he probably heard from Miranda.), he really didn't do anything to deserve suffering a near death by allergic reaction.
One of the greatest honors of my life was getting to work with Robin Williams. He truly was a gentle soul.❤

@@nsasupporter7557 George Carlin’s daughter was producing a comedy special in Marin. My friend was the A.D. on the project and asked if I wanted to work for her. As someone who works in film you always take a gig and when I learned that Robin Williams was going to be one of the comedians I definitely said yes. For the first two days I basically was just moving cars and getting the theater set up for the production on the third day we had our daily meeting. Cynthi (our A.D.) was in charge of those meetings and during that meeting she looked at me and said you’re Robins personal assistant. I wanted to jump out of my skin with excitement, but still have to be professional. So the next two days I got to hang out with Robin Williams and the other comedians. It was so much fun. He was very down-to-earth and a loving man and the world will miss him forever. ❤️

Love the curls Magy. This is a really good reaction to an amazing movie. Robin Williams was something special. This was the first appearance of Mara Wilson who was also in Miracle on 34th Street and Matilda among others. Peirce Brosnon too who played James Bond for a time starting with Goldeneye

There are two deleted scenes involving the bus driver asking out Mrs. Doubtfire, first he says in character she's married, then there was an alternate one where he broke character and admitted he was actually a man.

I know a very long time ago when my parents were divorced in 1979, my brother and I were with mother in southern California, enjoyed with relatives visiting there someday with good Aunts, Uncles, and Grandparents in my memories back in good old 1980's & 1990's too. My Grandparents passed away in 2000's and I was sad to be without Grandparents but I still have Aunts and Uncles in California even cousins in different states. Someday I will fly to Pennsylvania to see my Aunt Irene and Uncle Rick then wanted to drive over to sad place is Spranksville to see Flight 93 Memorial there, too.

I deliver wine and liquor to Bridges Restaurant in Danville California every week. I love this movie and miss Robin Williams.
My parents were going through their divorce when this was in theaters. I was 10-11 years old and didn't really want to talk about it to anyone. I went with my mom to the theater just expecting something funny and we both were crying together at the end. It was therapy for us both and has a special place in my heart because of it. Trust me, that monologue at the end is 100% true.
Do you think it would have been more traumatic for the son catching Mrs Doubtfire sitting down on the toilet 😂
I think it was Robin Williams who insisted the parents would not be back together at the end of the movie. The argument was that the movie should not give false hopes to children.
The court room scene in the beginning burns me. I was in that situation when I got divorced. Except the genders were different; the outcome was very different. My poor wife got support and alimony to help her through the difficult transition. I had to go find another place to live.
This was my intro to Robin Williams as a kid..thanks for the flashbacks haha

Hey Magy, nice reaction. I highly suggest you show this to Lora. This is one of Robin William's best films. He truly shone here. Enter San Francisco, famous for a lot of movie locations. Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan were both good. If you want to see Pierce again, may I suggest Goldeneye and The Lawnmower Man.

Such a beautiful movie to revisit. That one scene, where she's talking to Mrs. Doubtfire about her ex-husband, makes me wonder if more couples' troubles might be resolved if they could occasionally talk to one another as though to a near stranger about that thing that most bothers them. IDK, just a thought.

2:37 Very little of this movie relies on _plot_ development. This is much more what writers refer to as a _character_ driven story. Robin Williams1 was just the right actor, though, to play Daniel; the kind of man who would make a wonderful father, given a little responsibility.

It’s movies like these that were showing in the 90s and early 2000s where getting married always screws the men over. This is why I never want to get married because the woman gets away with everything and it leaves the men to rot into a shitty situation. Too many people these days don’t try to work out A marriage and they just want to get a divorce.

Lisa Jakub, who played Lydia was expelled from her high school for this movie. At the time, she needed to take 5 months off of school in Toronto to go to San Francisco to film the movie. Robin Williams wrote a letter to her school, pleading them not to expel her. They didn't take her back but he showed his love and care for his costars almost all the time.
