- More than six years after the murders of 8 members of the Rhoden and Gilley families in Pike County, Ohio, a trial for one of the defendants charged with the killings is beginning. Prosecutors said four members of the Wagner family allegedly committed the murders over a child custody dispute. The Law&Crime Network's Angenette Levy speaks with former Deputy Attorney General of Ohio Mark Weaver and forensic death investigator Joseph Scott Morgan about the case that rocked the foothills of Appalachia and beyond.

I live in the poorest county in Georgia and no one here has ever done anything like this. Income levels don't correlate to the amount of evil one has in their soul.
They don't appear all that poor, anyway. Well fed. Newish clothes. A horse farm...? Plenty of leisure time apparently.
I totally agree most poor I think are MORE LIKELY to attend church than the very RICH and be taught biblical morals instead of humanism

That’s a lot of evil in one family. I’m thankful the children are out of their reach.
I had heard that the father didn't even want the kid. Then through bullying, he got custody of his other kid--and he wasn't even a good dad at any time. It's all about control and extreme stupidity that gets passed from generation to generation.

The cruelty of killing his daughter's mother as she was nursing her newborn is beyond comprehension. The mindless slaughter of this family is just unbelievable. They all four richly deserve to pay for their crimes/sins with their own lives.

Just imagine when that little girl grows up, she has to live with the fact that most of her family was murdered by the rest of her family all because of her!!! That's a trauma you may never come back from. I hope she finds peace one day.
It may have been their excuse, but normal people don't go to murder over custody unless you (they) were already messed up in the head with their own issues. Yes, that child would be better off never knowing what happened, then knowing the truth. She will be messed up enough for not having her family raise her. But being around the creeps that did the murdering, would never be a good idea either.

This is the most sickening story I've heard in a long time. It's like the Texas chainsaw massacre family. Killing the mother of your child whilst she's breastfeeding and then propping her body back up after you've shot her so that the baby could continue to feed is just horror I can't fathom.
It is unbelievable that a family could murder another family. They planned it. This is in the county next to where I live. I didn’t know any of them. Terrible terrible.

Broke my heart when she said they shot the babies mother and the baby had blood all over him/her. How disgusting! To do that right next to the baby that they are related to and just leave it laying next to the dead bodies full of blood probably crying. Makes me so angry. I hope they suffer for the rest of their lives and that the babies grow up healthy & can find peace.

He had said he shot the mom and then positioned her with the baby in case the baby wanted to nurse. So sick. Unimaginable. I can't wrap my head around how these people can exist.
That was one of the cruelest of all I think. It broke my heart too. The killer said it was so the baby could continue nursing on Hanna , the murdered mama. Now that takes a really sick evil 👿 mind.

Why murder all these people over custody? Both parents were young, they could have shared custody. This is such a horrible crime. People are so quick to pull out a gun and kill like that resolves anything. Now that child won't know either parent. Disgusting people. 😢🤬💔

It is horrifying that ALL of them agreed to kill all those people. And all over custody of a child that has all of their blood running through it's veins? My prayers go out to those children. This is something that would be better for them to grow up not knowing.

I remember vividly when this first hit the news in 2016. It was weird hearing about it in such a small town. Initial rumors centered around drug cartel hit
This case has had me bothered. Since the day we found out about it on the local news. I did not know them I feel horrible for the victims family. The grandmother has been through an unimaginable event.

I remember hearing this story on the news the day it happened. I feel so bad for the babies. In the matter of 1 day these babies were left orphans. You have ice running through your veins to pull off something like this over custody. I hope they all get the death penalty or life with no parole. Let them rot in a jail cell.

It's definitely no excuse, but it's an added factor, which is why they contributed to the drug epidemic by selling. If the cost of education is poor in the area, you will have products of toxic family education. Why people unalive themselves in the high crime urban areas daily.

What a pointless, unnecessary, uninvited, ugly comment, especially where these victims and the innocent little children left without 3 generations of family members, and no parents to love and raise them at all now, are concerned. Implying a diploma could or did have a thing to do with the evil living in this family of murderers, like it would of made a difference for the 8 people who did not deserve to die, diploma or not, is pretty ignorant in and of itself... Lack of education wasn't the issue here. It's lack of morals, compassion, empathy, kindness, understanding, and then some that contributed to these cold hearted killings. So I don't understand why you'd want to waste time with that ugliness except to get a cheap laugh out of another's tragedies. Which is quite compassionless and unempathetic in itself..... Wow. I remember hearing about this story but, never followed up to know why. The reason why they murdered these people is INSANE!
A whole family wiping out the blood line of another. Oh my god. I’m truly speechless.
I just can’t imagine that little girl growing up to understand this all. We hear from one parent killing another and going to jail leaving the child an orphan but this girl must have lost half her extended family, how horrible is that!

Thank you for the update I've been waiting to hear for a long long time. You would think this would be bigger news. It was one of those moments in life where you remember where you were when you woke up in the morning and heard eight people of a family slaughtered.
Intriguing, I always knew there was more to life and i have also been looking for a way to find not only protection but a way to be influential to the human society
oh well you can achieve that by being a part of the illuminatus brotherhood, i know it sounds like a mystery but there are ways you can actually get in contact with them

Oh, and one MORE thing: I wish the State would take the children, adopt them out to loving homes and have their last names legally changed, so that they will have no public ties to the Wagners. Raise them and NEVER mention their ties to that family, and let the Wagners know before putting them to death that the children they murdered for will NOT ever know of them, hear about them, share their last name, nor see them. They will, figuratively and literally, be DEAD to them.
But the children are with the Rhoden's now. The state doesn't need to take them away.
That would be the only justice that could come of this.

Would agree, but George’s child still has a mother that was coerced into giving up custody (pretty sure she’d be dead otherwise) and Jake‘s daughter still has family on her mother’s side. You’d punish those too undeservingly adopting away these kids

I hope this man’s family doesn’t get custody of the children. I hope the mom has some distant family/friends who will take the kids.
What I don't understand is how they thought they could get away with it. I mean, I can see being protective of a child but really? This is a lot of people. They may have meticulously planned it but they didn't plan a good getaway.
Pike County has a ton of murders that have gone unsolved! It's a very small place with not a lot of resources!
Its southern Ohio. Everybody knows everybody if they aren't actually related. They have the mind set that their "kin" won't turn on them, and everyone else will keep their moths shut or they'll get "theirs". I lived there, just think Hatfields and McCoys or "Deliverance".
Look how long they did get away with it. This in spite of it being all over Topix that the Wagner brothers did it from the start. When it's a place where everyone knows who did it, but law enforcement's reaction is , "Dooooh, we have no idea who could do such a thing," it's a wonder they were finally caught.

Forget the death penalty. Put them all in jail & plaster the walls with the pictures of all the deceased that they were responsible for. My own parents grew up poor during the depression & never turned to crime. I hate that being a part of an Appalachian county is an excuse to turn to crime. Many people find ways to earn a living without being a criminal. Praying for the little girl to have a safe life away from that environment.
My mind just 💥 that a family would sit down and agree to wipe out another family over a custody case. It's insane why cannot people just Grow up and act like Adults.

Hard agree. All of them willingly ended an entire family over child custody. All of them should pay.
I followed this also when it happened. It took literally years for law enforcement to figure this out and indict anyone.

This hellacious and heinous tragedy is so heartbreaking. My heart goes out to the babies and young girl that had to witness their parents’ lives being taken far too soon. My thoughts and prayers are with the children and remaining family members. I hope that all of the victims are resting peace. 💗
I drive by that property a lot. Hard to believe what happened there. I am just glad that they solved this. Everyone was paranoid for a long time

Killed 8 people for the custody of a kid, but who are we fooling? It's not because of the custody, it's about ownership, about the anger they felt when their property was being taken, the feeling of being smited. Now they've killed 8 people and the kid is going to have to live through their life knowing what happened to her family. One side of the family is dead and the other is in prison because they killed them.

This reminds me of the book Winter’s Bone about Appalachian families and how deep loyalty to bloodlines run. In the book one family planned and covered up a murder that the whole community knew they committed but everyone was scared to speak up. Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for the film adaptation

That book is set in Missouri, which isn't Appalachia. I agree that it's a great book and movie, though.

The fact that they did this over custody show the level they value human life at. The fact this could’ve been settled in court and instead they wiped out an entire family leaving an infant to breastfeed on the moms corpse is horrible.
ALSO- would like to add that while i am so happy they left the little babies alone, that leaving them alone in a house with all of the adults they love and that love them slaughtered around them is HORRIFIC AND HORRIBLE as well...smdh
It’s an absolutely disgusting thing to do to an entire family and community. It will take decades to recover from this, both of the families who lost family members will never forget was those horrific people did to them. It’s a shame that the death penalty isn’t in use in this case

You know, as a single parent I have gone through a tough custody battle with my ex and her family, so I can understand how tempers can flare. But to kill, that is a whole other ball game. What is the matter with people??

What the one guy doesn't get is that you don't have to pull the trigger to be convicted of murder. He was a participant in a murder plot and he did nothing to stop it at any point.

This was a very good video! Just very well done. Thank you. Our family was STUNNED, and prayed for the victims and their loved ones that night. They've never too far from our hearts. Now perhaps Jake has made it possible for the families to see the justice they all deserve. I am a native of Ohio, families there are usually tight knit. They may scrap amongst themselves, but not with such evil as this.
