    Eastern State Penitentiary is known to be one of the most haunted and oldest prisions to date. Opened in 1829, this was known as the most expensive prison every built in America at that time. It even housed the famous american gangster, Al Capone. It closed in 1971 and is now owned by eastern state preservation group. Besides punishing the criminals inside it walls, it also was created to move the criminal toward spiritual reflection and change. The method was a Quaker-inspired system of isolation from other prisoners, with labor. The early system was strict. To prevent distraction, knowledge of the building, and even mild interaction with guards, inmates were hooded whenever they were outside their cells. But the proponents of the system believed strongly that the criminals, exposed, in silence, to thoughts of their behavior and the ugliness of their crimes, would become genuinely penitent. Thus the new word, penitentiary. Source: www.easternstat...

    Al Capone was a prisoner here! This is on my bucket list! I have seen so many programs on this penitentiary. I would love to be scared out of my wits! Thanks for sharing this with the world! This is so interesting!

      if you in the philly area or will be visiting, go check it out. Open all year round I believe but see it in the spring. Good price as well for the tour.

    @MartialDuartist 9 лет назад +4

    Did I hear that correctly?
    For $50 a year, you get all-access to the penitentiary, and can roam around after hours even? If that's the case - I'm down. I'll sleep in a cell and record E.V.P.'s all night.

    • @AbandonedSteve
      @AbandonedSteve  9 лет назад +2

      ***** from what I was told, you get access to some areas the public can not go to. It comes admission for the year and also there are special after hour nights for photographers

    This place is very much haunted. Been featured in many shows and they do offer times where you can go there during the night. Many ppl were put to death in this place and many died from conditions. Its very active from what I hear

    Those cells, No windows, it must have been stuffy.i had never heard that before about how the name penitentiary came about! Learn something new everyday! Thanks for posting this video!

      Every cell was designed to be solitary confinement. Hooded when moved place to place to avoid talking amongst prisoners. Worse conditions bc every cell was solitary.

    I understand this video was made before COVID; however, the fact they don't have these rooms & objects, now now considered exhibits in some sort of enclosure, not only for historical preservation, but also for the visitors and employees health--the amount of asbestos and lead paint in that place must be astronomical.
    This video shows open rooms or rooms that are minimally partitioned off. At the end, the guy who was talking about an "unlimited pass". If he did purchase that pass; hopefully, he wears a mask on future visits.
