Fun fact: Max Grodénchik was actually a minor league baseball player, so he had to bat left handed in this episode to make it seem like he didn't know what he was doing
My favorite part of this episode is Worf’s trash talk being a deadpan “death to the opposition”. Not because he’s a Klingon, but because he was raised by Russians.
I have never understood how somebody could dislike this episode, why I always have to defend it. We get to spend 7 seasons with these characters going through literal hell and what seems like a nevernending war. And then we get to see them come together and just enjoy themselves for a single episode. To come together and have fun like they deserve, and we get to be there with them. It's a lovely episode that deserves more love than it usually gets. It's one of my favorite episodes of DS9, and it's got some big competition. Top ten for sure, possibly top five.
Great analysis. DS9 has always been my favorite Trek series. It and Babylon 5 were my favorite sci-fi shows growing up. More than any show I had seen to that point they really took a hard look at how complex the ideas of war and peace were. They showed how there was more to it than just war/bad, peace/good. A truly great show with truly great ideas.
This was fun! I like the choice of a more "low stakes" scene - hope is important in all situations, whether that be a grand existential struggle or just in the day-to-day interpersonal dynamics of our lives. Fantastic work :)
One of my favorite parts of this episode is how they lose the game. Like this is a traditional sports movie narrative and those often end with the underdog winning, but it works so much better for the message of the episode for them to just have fun doing their best instead of being focused on just winning.
I think these are some of my favourite types of episodes - ones that leave you with that feel good feeling, and where something important happened, but it is outside of the over aching plot of the season or series.
I always understood Sisko as a role model for Nog but really didn’t think of it for Rom until this video. You stated the reasons very well. It should be obvious now!
While the main arc has some great moments, I always loved these side episodes where we got to see the crew of DS9 being a family. Wish we had more of them
The VO seems really quiet in this one for me. I have to crank the volume up to hear it over the background music and then I have to turn it all the way back down whenever the episode clips start up to save my speakers. Also I thought Rom's wife was named Leeta with a T.
This episodes show how why modern sci-fi TV has lost its way : the loss of the meaningful filler episodes and the pacing to allow them. Instead everything is now arranged like really long movies.

Sounds more like the Banderites.

My favourite episode in all of Trek. To Manufactured Triumph!
Manufactured Triumph! Hear Hear!

Damn...I watched DS9 so many times, but never consciously realized the parallels between Rom & Sisko. Fantastic essay.

Love this analysis of this episode!
DS9 was really good at these light episodes to give breathing room in the midst of the darkness.
One of my favorite ST bits ever is when Ezri says “Human? Did I forget to wear my spots?”😂

This is an interesting take on an interesting episode. Wisdom can always shine through even if the stakes don't seem so high. Bravo.
I love listening to these. Thank you.
My cats include: Nog, Jadzia, Miles, Julian, and Quark, as well as my late Odo. I love DS9, even if Enterprise is my favorite series.
Engagement for the engagement god!
Thank you for this heartwarming take on one of my favourite episodes of DS9 ! :)
Great video as always, but a little quiet on the audio side
Take me out to the holosuite is probably my favorite episode of star trek.

Supposedly, Strange New Worlds which premieres on May 5th will bring back the "episodic" storytelling of Trek's past.
Makes me wonder if you watched Lowerdecks
Well said and well done on all counts!
Omg have you seen Honey Bat's DS9 video? It might be just your thing.
5:25 Leeta.
