Alligator gar grow incredibly fast for the first few years of their life. Even in the wild they’ve been documented to reach 18-24 inches in the first year. Once they get to about 30-36 inches they shook down a lot. I imagine they grow even faster in captivity. This should be a fact all breeders of these fish should inform customers of. These fish are known to reach over 7 feet in the wild regularly. Think before you buy these fish

It's also worth noting that they can grow to be over eight feet long, over three hundred pounds, and a century old given the right conditions. If you can't provide the right environment and commit to keeping them possibly for the rest of your life, then you should probably just enjoy them from afar.

(Or at all, except very rare instances in shallow ocean, but THIS? Hard no, lo)
I kind of want them to keep doing what they do being creepy awesome dinofish without my interference. I also kinda don't want to find out the hard way that the locals might be wrong about how "docile" they are.

I think for newbies that still want to add that Dinosaur feel into the tank, you could buy a Spotted Gar rather than a Alligator Gar since spotted gars is a lot smaller than the Alligator Gars, and they grow slower too. Gars are usually easy to care for as they can adapt to all water parameters and it takes little to no knowledge to care for them which makes them good for beginners however their massive size is the problem because you need at least 150 gallons of Tank for them.

I used to love watching it eat, all those golden scales glittering as they descended to the bottom of the tank was mesmerizing. It didnt get more than 12 inches or so before I came home and found it dead on the carpet. I had a screen lid on top but the damn thing would jump out with such force that it escaped the lid and died on the floor. It did this several times before it died. First time I didnt have a lid. Second time I had a lid. 3rd time I had a brick in the lid. Dont under estimate their speed and strength even when little. Man that takes me way way back lol

What did you feed them when they are 2 inches they have the smalles mouths at that size they are too small to eat any live fish at all any feeders way too small for that. I tried tiny pieces of fish and shrimp and my gator gars keep dying I have had 3 die on me already I don’t get why, I have so many fish and they are all so healthy but I cannot raise a gar to save my life

predatory aquarium fish eats and grow very fast ,my own personal experience so if you have smaller space in your place don’t buy these fish or you can keep for a while and sell it. I usually buy smaller one after certain size I will sell it. They are always hungry.....🐟😋

They've started finding American Alligator Gar in ponds in China... They outlived the extinction of the dinosaurs, if they learn to walk on dry land it's over for us.
