By the way, G90 turned out to be a pretty neat radio. Nothing fancy, good tuner, fairly simple menu system. Did some DX contacts with JPC-12 antenna. The downside is the screen size of a postal stamp, but one you get used to it it's a fun little machine.
I ended up purchasing this rig mostly for the larger screen. Had the 817 and then the 818. Screen is way too small on those… IC-705 was another option, but the cost for 10 watts seems a bit much… The 7300 is still my go to rig for portable ops but is just to big, heavy for backpacking and long hikes. Feel this will fit the bill nicely. Only 5 to 8 watts 😡. But I’ll just have to go into a long hike with limited expectations on how many contacts I’m going to make… I’ll give the X-6200 a try. If I don’t like it I can always sell it…
I am taking Tech test next month. Looking for best multi band mobile and cw is a must. I do not want to buy a Chinese product. Willing to pay for quality. Any suggestions to research? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
ICOM or Yaesu if you don’t want Chinese. Kenwood if they ever come out with any new devices. But don’t knock the Chinese radios too much, they’re inexpensive and will get a Ham on the air, which is more important. I’ve been rocking a TYT TH-9800D for a couple of years now and I recently bought a Vero VRN-7500 that is set up as a remote station at my QTH.
If you really care about quality, then look at the Xiegu G90, I own two of them. One I have set up for travel around the country. The big three only makes radios the size of your kitchen sink. The G90 will fit in a briefcase and get you around the world on a piece of wire. It will Tuna Fish! 😂
As I said in TO's videos: a big "nope" for me. They had a chance to make a cheaper, decent IC705 alternative, but they blew it...again. Is it really hard for them to make an all-band, all-mode QRP radio? I'm not saying it'll replace the IC705, but they have the opportunity to make a cheaper alternative. That is something I will invest in.
I have one. and I get frustrated with 5watts. if you plug in external power you can get up to 8 watts. I get slightly less frustrated on 8 watts. I'm about to sell mine because QRP is just not for me. I had the same result with the X6100. Nothing wrong with the radio, it's just QRP operating. I will say the CW decoder is nice. I don't have that kind of frustration with my G90 that I use all the time. May buy the FT710 though after selling the X6200
Hi , I have the Yaesu 991A . I connected to a li-po battery , and use it with only 10 watt . With a end fed antenna I work al Europe - South america .Makes some contacts with Canada . Furthest contact was with Russia , 15000 kilometers away from where I live ( Minas Gerais Brazil ) . Last week with a simple whip antenna from allie express , 10 meter band with elevated counterpois I make a contact with Switzerland 4/4 😁 . It's more challenging and fun. I want to buy chameleon our Alpha delta whip and the x6200 but unfortunately I must pay more than 100% importtax 😒. 73 from PY/ PD9CHR
I bought a 6100 when my 891 was in for warranty repair. I wanted to try qrp. I didn't make any dx, but I did make some qso, and I did get some good signal reports, but I was also using a good antenna that was setup well. I also am going to sell my 6100.
Showing my ignorance here, be gentle, why would you spend the money for a rig like this when you can do QRP with a handheld that is also only 5 watts? What am I missing? Is it the auto antenna tuner? Thanks for the review.
Assuming you are talking about radios for the same bands, yes, there are alternatives like the truSDX, ubitx or QMX that make different tradeoffs. Generally, the more you spend, the better the receiver and more polished interface for different use cases.
Honestly, a lot of what I think one would be paying for here is the screen! It still seems a bit pricey, though, especially when it's basically an evolution of the X6100. So far in these reviews, I haven't seen enough of a leap forward to justify Xiegu continuing to sell both radios, one at a higher price point, rather than truly replacing the 6100 at the old price point, or a more modest advance on it. This isn't like the difference between an FT-710 and an FT-DX10 (which isn't quite worth THAT price gap, either, but comes closer to it).
It is and it isn't. For example, a G90 costs as much as GPU if you're gaming and you'll still have it 10 years or more from now. If you're into shooting sports, a G90 is equal to a case of 556 ammo and that's a consumable too. As others have pointed out, it's a good radio that has everything you need in one unit and you can make your own antennas after that which is part of the fun of the hobby. 👍 20w is good enough power that you can toy and experiment with it for a long while. It's really "how much do you want to spend?" I'm with you on the $100 a watt though. I'll keep my FT891 and G90.
@@HamRadio2 I didn’t make the first comment. It just hard to hear when YT creators seem to want background music in their content. I appreciate your videos but hard to follow when there is background music.

If it did 20 watts like the G-90, I would definitely consider it….
Carrying this and the amp on a POTA or SOTA, I’ll just stick with my 7300.

Actually seeing some really nice improvements here, more than I thought would be in the X6200
The 6100 is awesome. This looks a little improved a great radio for those getting into HF and very affordable.
Good looking rig, do wish it would do 20 watts though.

@HamRadio2 too busy to do Huntsville or this EE would visit and be a pest.
The online manual says it does not cover the upper 100 kHz of 80 and 40 meters on transmit. Is this the case or is it a misprint
5 watts max for that price?
I just picked up a brand new IC-7300 shipped to my door for $809

This is an HF radio. 1.8 - 54 MHz. Your handheld is VHF/UHF.
