I connected with your message today Andre, specifically regarding the importance of embracing a positive outlook, to be proud of where you're at, and also the significance of being an amature. I've been playing, composing, and recording for years without commercial success. But I'm ok with that because I play for my own self expression and fulfillment. I appreciate what you bring to the table with this channel including these fireside sessions. You are enough and you are not alone. I apreciate those words today as I work my day job and look forward to getting home so I can play my instrument. What a privilege we have to be a part of such a beautiful musical community here on RUclips. ❤
I'm in the couple of dozen now. It took me a long time to get here. I'm frequently asked 'When are you going to play for us?'. These days I'm confortable enough to answer 'I'm not a performer.', even if it doesn't go down well. Glad you're not Julian, he's not here being cheesy in a way that's thought provoking and reassuring, while also giving useful guitar advice, insights and great arrangements :-) Part of the joy I get from guitar is being able to play well enough to really appreciate the unique musicianship of Julian Lage, Eric Johnson, Larry Carlton and many others including Andre Fludd. Didn't Dave Gilmour just talk about realizing that he was never going to have the same skills as Eric Johnson, so he found his own way? I think it worked out for him 🙂Keep on being you!
Great video. My journey playing guitar started 30 years ago 1. because music is imprinted in me. I don't know why it is, but it is. Everything I do I hear/feel some sort of musical representation of it while doing it in my head. Guitar based blues and jazz are what resonates the best with me...but the 2nd and most important reason is its for me personally. So many fans just prop up guitar prodigies as something mystical, but if you learn and understand what they're doing they become more human and artistic in the best ways. It's really understanding what's going on and all the little nuances that make them great. I've performed before for people, wife, etc, but I have no inner drive to do so. I write music for myself and record for myself for my own appreciation. Mastering the guitar, and music theory was deeply personal only for me. I suppose I view it as a gift to myself...which we all should find that one thing and master as a gift to self. :) I do like to see people get enjoyment while playing for them...and sometimes its funny when a co-worker or clueless friend sees me play. The kid like shock never gets old as I forget how difficult guitar seemed when I started, they always remind me...but still my journey is 100% a selfish one for my own enjoyment.
Excellent stuff Doc…the thing I love about the guitar is that it’s a medium that measures me against myself…the only thing that holds me back is me…conversely the only thing that propels me forward is me…today I am the product of the time and effort I have given to the instrument…its that simple and I love it and hate it at the same time…I enjoyed this vid and btw, you should brush up on your dorian licks🤣
Andre, this is what I really needed to hear. I love playing the guitar and I don’t need anyone else to care. I’ve played in a band that played shows and don’t really care if I ever do it again. I don’t hate playing live or anything, it’s just that I really enjoy practicing and playing the instrument even if nobody else hears me. I may someday record something, but I don’t have to. Thank you for this, I will be subscribing now.

What they're really asking, is if you're taken and/or if they can come see you play. Nobody asks that to someone they think sucks, in fact nobody even approaches anyone at all in a store like that unless they think they're good. they probably also feel there could be more bands in the area sharing their awesome passion for music with the rest of the community. I love this Channel. You are kind and totally do your homework. I think I am terrible at guitar. When I was 14 I thought I was amazing. I do get to jam nights with the boys and have no issues keeping up. Cheers Sir.

This is probably the first video that i feel descibes my guitar ambition almost to a t. I've played for a couple decades now, some of them in bands and a little infront of friends and family, but these days i have to actually find the time to put my hands on my guitars.
Your in depth analysis of guitars blows away other reviews … it is so self-evident and THAT is what drives us to listen to you. You ARE an authority Dr. Fludd! Neither you nor we give a phuck about RUclips comments. People are smart.

This is an excellent video. I meander along reading various books in order to become a better guitarist, but improving on the guitar is really my only goal. There's no exterior reason for this and there never has been. I'm 53 and I've never been in a band and I never wanted to be in one. I've never recorded anything and I never wanted to. I randomly learn things as it suits me. There's no plan behind this and, if there were, I'd think I'd enjoy it a lot less. Recent years have seen a growing hyper-focus on gear, licks, chops & “fretboard gymnastics”. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with any of these things, a potential drawback of this trend is to shift focus onto comparisons with others rather than deriving the most value from our own experiences. This video is a breath of fresh air & a reminder to all of us what is truly important in our own journeys. Thank you for this video. The community could stand to have more like it.
We need cheesy! It is refreshing when someone chats to the viewer without looking down on them and treat them like an equal. I know that may sound weird but there's a lot of big egos on the RUclips and it can get a bit tiresome. So I only watch channels that are to my liking. Which includes yourself Andre! :) Also 15:55 was a very useful reminder to me. I have received some crappy comments on my guitar videos and they annoy me . Then I remember that I also have way more positive experiences and nice comments! So at the end of the day, if someone is insulting me, they're obviously feeling lacking inside. I definitely have goals and I do like writing my own original music. I want to get better as a guitarist but that's also to make music that I can be proud of. It's so much joy to be able to connect with the guitar and music . But I don't care at all if people like my original music. I would be STOKED if people like it, I would be pleased. But I will still record and release my music whether people like it or not. Ah yeah, I don't want to tour or be in a band at the moment. I would like to join / create a band if I'm playing music I LOVE . But I have already been a member of bands I didn't enjoy being in . So I would rather do it as a selfish venture. Of course it's more fun with other people . But then again I don't want people messing with my creative vision. I know that makes me sound like I have a big ego, but my taste is weird and I don't want to be edited by someone else. I would be super duper happy if they can add to the song or even bring their own songs. I want to go back to university to study music again ( i've done it previously but didn't finish it) Thank you for making videos and your channel , and for the fascinating video! :)
Thanks for the video. I think there's another dimension to this: We live in societies that make it difficult for people to be who they truly are. There would be a lot more happiness in the world if the goal of society would be to recognize that each of us has the desire to create, and to have systems that truly facilitate those desires. In todays world, even great, if not legendary players, singers, composers, struggle. It's all because of our collective failure to create a world that allows us be who we are without unnecessary grief. You if you abused a dog, didn't feed it, take it for walks, etc., you could go to jail, but in our world, we make it nearly impossible for humans to do what humans do best: create in some capacity.
Funny - I keep running into people whose sole reason for playing guitar is to acquire more gear. (Me included - and as a side benefit - I get to annoy my kids with tortuous renditions of "dad rock") Pretty sure Gear is how I stumbled onto this channel, so you're part of the problem. (joking) Seriously though, I'm over 50 and only been serious about guitar since the big pause. While I do have the odd daydream of rocking out on stage - I do just play for me. To rediscover a song I liked back as a teen/ young adult and then discover that there is a well shot video lesson out there, with tabs - and that the song isn't super hard to play is FUN. In recent months, when new songs seem to get under my fingers more easily - I feel so accomplished as it is a sign of progress - even though G-C changes still annoy me. I know I'll never be a virtuoso, never know every note and scale by heart and not even master the solo on many of the songs I choose to spend some time on. (Hell, half the chords that Andre plays in the demo's I've never seen before - let alone be able to identify - and his skill level is a quantum leap over mine) But I don't care. Sitting down with a guitar and learning a new riff just makes me happy. Hanging out with some of my favorite content creators - to see what they are up to this week and maybe check out what the community has to say does make me feel part of a group of like-minded people that is spread out all over the globe. I don't feel the need to prove myself to anyone although, at some point in the future, the other residents at the nursing home are going to be very annoyed - especially if I can fit a Marshall full stack in my room.
TBH I often just play scales without even being plugged into my amp. Not because they're interesting but because I work from home and have to sit through a lot of boring meetings. There's no camera going, my mic is muted, so why not?
ressentiment is a hell of a drug, but the solution is simple (though hard to implement actively), you have to take the advice from ozzy osbourne on crazy train and "learn how to love, forget how to hate" or at least you have to forget the object of blame, forgetting blame entirely probably isnt gonna happen without a head injury lol. you have to not think about it and instead fill your time with other things which in turn fills your mind with other thoughts. when you were a child, time seemed to go on and on and never pass, and thats because you werent intellectualizing the passage of time, you werent looking back on a long day spent idk playing in a sandbox or like with toy cars or something idk and saying "by golly, i sure let the day slip past me, i ought to have spent my time better. my childhood certainly wont last forever, as you know", you were literally JUST vibing, purely following and being carried along by desire as if you were on a raft floating down a river, watching the banks drift past that line from crazy train really is perfect here, because it (overcoming your personal ressentiment based actions, not the song crazy train, the song is of course about a man riding a train, as we all know) ultimately is about forgetting and not thinking about the things you resent (forget how to hate) meanwhile you cultivate your desire and let it go unrestrained (learn how to love), so i think it's also perfect for andre to emphasize following your passion even if it isnt on the list of acceptable desires (the complete list by the way is as follows: 1. being an astronaut 2. being a knight 3. being a cowboy 4. being a princess 5. being a rockstar, and oh well would you look at that. your name aint on that list, sorry thanks for trying. NEXT!!!). being able to do the things youre driven to do without wasting your vital energy, your literal life force, your time on earth, your effort drawn from the pool of everything youll ever be able to do on defending your ego against people who've done nothing to you except remind you of what you are or arent doing, thats the thing thatll genuinely allow you to be happy. imo child prodigies are so good and so amazing because they were able to practice and get good without the horrible cycle of regretting wasted time and resenting the success of others, theres no rush if you arent intending go anywhere. anyone who goes for walks knows that a short but important walk, like youre on a schedule and you need to be somewhere, takes vastly more mental effort than a walk for leisure to nowhere in particular by way of no specific route even if that second walk takes twice or three times as long as the first. in a sense, ignorance really is bliss
I do like this sort of therapeutic take. I’m a bit stoned so excuse me if I don’t quit make sense. I definitely get the not good enough thing. I’ve been playing 20 something years, tour, can rip, but it’s never good enough. There is always an insecurity in everyone. I do think the sort of enlightenment is accepting the player you are.
Being completely honest, I have come to find that my role in the "music world" is to teach more than to be a "gigging musician." It's far more enjoyable for me to teach and pass on the results of music being my autistic obsession. I may not be the best player in the world and I'm come to be okay with that as I've gotten older. Randy Rhoads is my major guitar hero not only because he could melt faces and is a highly technically player, but because of his desire to learn and pass that information on. I'm nowhere near Randy as a musician, but as said, that hasn't been my main focus. Melting faces is cool, but I somehow i enjoy seeing a student's musical journey and helping them achieve their goals. I hope this doesn't come across as arrogant, but I think it's kinda my musical "purpose." A lot of people around me says I'm "talented" or "have a gift" but I don't really believe that. I believe that it's possible for anyone to play the guitar (or whatever it is they want to learn) if they have the passion and are willing to put in the time to hone it.
I know it was not the sentiment of the video but I couldn't help but laugh at some points and think of how you barbecued the commenter with your breakdown of his comment
I'm guessing bros gonna say 'you need a headless guitar' Haven't watched yet but that's my guess Damnit Doc! I'm window shopping a shell pink Eart as fast as I can!
Ok watching and...I'm the guy you're talking about. Played for 25 years, just as therapy really. Same reason I ride BMX almost daily at 45....it's not to relive anything or aspire to anything. It's just the way I live. I don't know how else I'd get by without at least one acoustic ...no picks even I play with fingers mainly I'm a pima guy even on electrics and strangely My main guitar through my 20s was a Godin Multiac steel ..always loved playing acoustics and I take that seriously enough but. .electric to me is more like a toy. It's fun but I have no aspiration to be great at electric I just enjoy singing with my hands
Can confirm you're cheesy, but I love cheese, so I fail to see the issue. Much love to you, friend. Never change. To your actual discussion: I have this back and forth in my head a lot. I love making music, and I 100% intend to release it, but I have to make sure I'm making it for me. It's so easy to get caught in the trap of making what you think people like, even though "people don't know what they like until you give it to them" or some permutation of that quote.
I’m kind of the type he’s talking about. I don’t particularly care about gigging or recording; I just like to be able to pick it up and play whenever I want. I’m decent, and have shown band friends some things. If the right opportunity pops up, I’d gig, but it would really have to click with me.
The reality of the instrument sucked up a lot of the joy. Lot of ineffective parts, bad construction, bad setup even in the $$$ range of popular brands. Tried out techs and setups, saw very destructive methods and knew I had to do it myself. Frustrating that I had to learn luthier skills before enjoying guitar. Glad to see things are better now, but I can dial in any guitar to play like butter so now I dont buy expensive. I appreciate this channel for focusing on playability - really affects progress when you can enjoy the playing.
MOST people will allow just about anyone to influence their perception of themselves… But people who love their life refuse to accept the opinions of small minded people.
I see that you haven't accepted ttruth that Taylor Swift is the most powerful guitar player in the galaxy. This Julian person of whom you speak is maych for her power.......😂. So on that note, it is worth pointing out that pop artists who strum basic chirds on qn acoustic guitar and are not known for their technical prowes have mastered something that in that they resonaiwith people. Their musix might be considered garbage by out high and lofty standards but it means something to thise particular audiences. Nobody cares about the $10,000 Gibson R9 and Marshall staxks that except for other guitar players.....who sit in judgement because you "only know w couple of dorian licks". And when it comes to your goals, you should pursue them, but not to the detriment of your own good. If just picking up the guitar and noodling all day on a Saturday makes you happy, then allow yourself to do that. This thing doesn't have to be so regiment that you end up losing the simple joy of having the guitar in your hands.
Your channel and personality in general is a breath of fresh air in this little corner of the internet. Keep being you my friend

I want to go back to university to study music again ( i've done it previously but didn't finish it)
Thank you for making videos and your channel , and for the fascinating video!
I unsubscribed from a bunch of guitar RUclipsrs due to fatigue and overlapping content. Your channel hits different.
Funny - I keep running into people whose sole reason for playing guitar is to acquire more gear. (Me included - and as a side benefit - I get to annoy my kids with tortuous renditions of "dad rock")
Pretty sure Gear is how I stumbled onto this channel, so you're part of the problem. (joking)
Seriously though, I'm over 50 and only been serious about guitar since the big pause.
(Hell, half the chords that Andre plays in the demo's I've never seen before - let alone be able to identify - and his skill level is a quantum leap over mine)
But I don't care.
Thanks for sharing! I’m pretty sure you’d be the coolest guy in the nursing home
TBH I often just play scales without even being plugged into my amp. Not because they're interesting but because I work from home and have to sit through a lot of boring meetings. There's no camera going, my mic is muted, so why not?
musical fidget device
ressentiment is a hell of a drug, but the solution is simple (though hard to implement actively), you have to take the advice from ozzy osbourne on crazy train and "learn how to love, forget how to hate"
or at least you have to forget the object of blame, forgetting blame entirely probably isnt gonna happen without a head injury lol. you have to not think about it and instead fill your time with other things which in turn fills your mind with other thoughts.
when you were a child, time seemed to go on and on and never pass, and thats because you werent intellectualizing the passage of time, you werent looking back on a long day spent idk playing in a sandbox or like with toy cars or something idk and saying "by golly, i sure let the day slip past me, i ought to have spent my time better. my childhood certainly wont last forever, as you know", you were literally JUST vibing, purely following and being carried along by desire as if you were on a raft floating down a river, watching the banks drift past
that line from crazy train really is perfect here, because it (overcoming your personal ressentiment based actions, not the song crazy train, the song is of course about a man riding a train, as we all know) ultimately is about forgetting and not thinking about the things you resent (forget how to hate) meanwhile you cultivate your desire and let it go unrestrained (learn how to love), so i think it's also perfect for andre to emphasize following your passion even if it isnt on the list of acceptable desires (the complete list by the way is as follows: 1. being an astronaut 2. being a knight 3. being a cowboy 4. being a princess 5. being a rockstar, and oh well would you look at that. your name aint on that list, sorry thanks for trying. NEXT!!!). being able to do the things youre driven to do without wasting your vital energy, your literal life force, your time on earth, your effort drawn from the pool of everything youll ever be able to do on defending your ego against people who've done nothing to you except remind you of what you are or arent doing, thats the thing thatll genuinely allow you to be happy.
imo child prodigies are so good and so amazing because they were able to practice and get good without the horrible cycle of regretting wasted time and resenting the success of others, theres no rush if you arent intending go anywhere. anyone who goes for walks knows that a short but important walk, like youre on a schedule and you need to be somewhere, takes vastly more mental effort than a walk for leisure to nowhere in particular by way of no specific route even if that second walk takes twice or three times as long as the first.
in a sense, ignorance really is bliss
:raises hand:
yup, that's me!
I haven't started the video yet, but my immediate reaction is that it would be so funny if you did a yule log video but with a strandberg instead.
I'm guessing bros gonna say 'you need a headless guitar'
Haven't watched yet but that's my guess
Damnit Doc!
I don't know how else I'd get by without at least one acoustic ...no picks even I play with fingers mainly I'm a pima guy even on electrics and strangely
My main guitar through my 20s was a Godin Multiac steel ..always loved playing acoustics and I take that seriously enough but. .electric to me is more like a toy. It's fun but I have no aspiration to be great at electric I just enjoy singing with my hands
That's me. Playing for my own amusement.
I have two messages for you:
- Buy a Parker guitar
- If you haven't already bought a Parker guitar, buy a Parker guitar.
What's with Andre making these serenade videos for us lately???
Idk it feels right to me. This is really who I am lol
Dude, you need to post an invoice for therapy, we'll pay it!
MOST people will allow just about anyone to influence their perception of themselves… But people who love their life refuse to accept the opinions of small minded people.
Guilty of the same.
