What really is lurking in our oceans!?
We tried to get the special edition of this movie but could not find it available to rent on any platform and even had it say ‘unavailable in our area.’ Regardless, Sam and I really loved this movie!!

Sadly along with True Lies one of the most sorely abused on home video for no logical reason I can determine.
In the time since The Abyss last had a DVD (in the very early days of DVD with a master made for earlier LaserDisc) Terminator 2 has had any number of DVD and Bluray releases, and now even a (very bad) UHD Bluray release.
Something is definitely up with Cameron where The Abyss and True Lies are concerned - hopefully Disney resolve it.

James Cameron was such a nightmare to work with on this film, that only 3 people from this movie ever worked with him again. Ed Harris punched him in the face on set, and then refused to even talk about the movie for the longest time (comparing it to asking a soldier about vietnam).
Later on, Ed Harris did explain why Mary Elizabeth walked off the set. "In the drowning scene I was screaming at her to come back and wake up, and I was slapping her across the face and I see that they’ve run out of film in the camera - there’s a light on the camera - and nobody had said anything. And Mary Elizabeth stood up and said, 'We are not animals!' and walked off the set. They were going to let me just keep slapping her around!"

You really couldn't get away with making a film like this today. You hear a lot recently about directors such as Joss Whedon reportedly being abusive to their casts, but Cameron pushed people so far on this film that the two leads both suffered nervous breakdowns on set and refused to even discuss the film in subsequent years. Even his long-time go-to guy Michael Biehn pretty much quit working with Cameron after this film, only returning to film one short dream sequence for T2 that ended up in the extended cut. Actors trashed their dressing rooms en masse just from the stress. The crew took to wearing "You can't scare me-I work for James Cameron" T-shirts. The production of that film was one of the most notorious in history.

The guy makes good movies but I doubt most actors wanna work with him a second time after a project like this.

The one thing that impressed everyone on the crew was the acting in that scene. Ed Harris was so intense and he was acting to a camera lens through a plywood board with a hole cut in it. That scene makes me sob ever time and I’ve seen this movie dozens of times. The skill it takes to pull that off to a camera is astonishing to me.

Fun fact: 1989 was the year of underwater horror/thrillers.
From the wiki for DeepStar Six: "DeepStar Six was the first release of several underwater-themed feature movies released during 1989, including Leviathan, The Evil Below, Lords of the Deep, The Rift (Endless Descent) and The Abyss. With the exception of The Abyss, none of these films were box office hits."
Not sure what was going on in Hollywood at the time, but I remember these films popping up one after the other all year long. A few details:
    - Guy who has a crab slip out of his mouth underwater - J. Cameron's brother, who 'volunteered', and had actually crab crawl out with 'dead' make up on and no oxygen (a tube used).
    - After the few shots of 'falling down', Ed has been handled an air tube wrongly, so he got some water with it in his lungs and started drowning for real, and when he signed for 'cut the scene', Cameron asked for a couple more shots, before emerging. Right after it, Harris punched Cameron in the face and when day wrapped up, he nearly crashed, stopping on the roadside towards the motel, weeping and sobbing for half an hour or so.
    - Funnily enough, Mary Elizabeth got smacked around hard for real by Ed during CPR (Ed is a method actor after all), and at some point she couldn't take it, so she sauntered off the scene, with them doing POV shot from her position, since she couldn't bring herself to continue on with the scene.
    - Also, she was for real dragged through water with Ed, since puppet couldn't really give the reality of the underwater drowning (as per Cameron).
    - Funnily enough, Cameron spent most of the time underwater, up to 14 hours, before going dry and eventually moving towards the scenes 'on the shore'.
    - Place where they were filming, was actually an unfinished nuclear powerplant base (basically the building pot for all the concrete), where they filled it with water and covered whole top with black rubber foam, to create ocean floor darkness effect. At some point during the shooting of the 'rescue the sub' scene power went out, so Michael Biehn ('stached seal leader) had to stand in the dark for nearly twenty minutes in the opaque water, afraid to move. And oh, that rig they're all on for the most part - real thing, built from scratch.
    - Also, the longer cut of the movie - Director's Cut - expands on the nuclear threat and in the end it turns out that whole storm thing is an alien warning to "play nice, or else", turning point being Bud's compassion for everyone, when he disarmed the bomb, no matter the race or nation.

The first one, based on the abandoned plant's primary reactor containment vessel, held 7.5 million US gallons (28,000 m3) of water, was 55 feet (18 m) deep and 209 feet (70 m) across. At the time, it was the largest fresh-water filtered tank in the world. Additional scenes were shot in the second tank, an unused turbine pit, which held 2.5 million US gallons (9,500 m3) of water. As the production crew rushed to finish painting the main tank, millions of gallons of water poured in and took five days to fill. The Deepcore rig was anchored to a 90-ton concrete column at the bottom of the large tank. It consisted of six partial and complete modules that took over half a year to plan and build from scratch.
Then to cut out the sun light & give the illusion of being at 2’000ft under water, a thick layer of beads was floated on the water & a huge tarpaulin was suspended over that.
Also, during filming, James Cameron and the 26-person underwater diving crew sank to 50 feet (17 m) and stayed down for five hours at a time. To avoid decompression sickness, they would have to hang from hoses halfway up the tank for as long as two hours, breathing pure oxygen.

Same experience here! Miles off Hawaii and swam from one ship to another, half way there I looked down (with a mask) and saw the sunlight twinkling into the deep blue. Michael Phelps had nothing on me as I hydro-jetted to the boat! :D :D :D Great movie and great reaction, as usual, from y'all!

The ending may be a little cheesy, but you have to remember that James Cameron is huge nerd for deep sea exploration. I guess that is why the 'unknown' is shown as something friendly and magical instead of threatening monsters.

This was filmed in my home state of SC. The underwater scenes were filmed in the cooling tower of an unfinished nuclear facility. The special edition adds so much. Especially about the aliens. The alien agenda is similar to that of the alien in The Day the Earth Stood Still. The Special Edition includes a scene where the aliens let the world know how powerful they are. BTW, Bud's wedding ring is made of titanium. His wife had it made because she thought he would bang up a regular gold ring.

23:29- The helmet was filled with fluid and Ed Harris held his breath. Turns out one take took too long. Ed almost drowned in that helmet. He was so pissed, he punched out Cameron. Those actors took a lot of shit on that movie. Chlorine burns, drown risks. Super risky film making. A lot of those shots were actors, not stunt men. The rat in fluid scene--- there were five rats used to shoot various takes. They are actually breathing liquid oxygen. You never see it, but many of the rats took a shit in the bag while going thru the process.

I wish I could lend you my Director’s Cut DVD! This version is a solid 8, but the longer cut is a 9 or higher. It started the whole CGI explosion that followed. A groundbreaking film in many ways.
The behind the scenes documentaries are also superb, as this film was a notoriously troubled movie. Cameron was such an abusive taskmaster, that the actors won’t discuss this film to this day. The methods to his madness always pay off film-wise, but he used to be a real asshole. Genius filmmaker and innovator, and apparently has mellowed quite a bit. Hope so. Great reaction, guys!!

on the subject on how they filmed the liquid breathing scenes (if i recall correctly):
    1. The Rat breathed the real stuff
    2. For the suiting up scenes, he had indeed his helmet filled with colored water, and he had only a limited time per shot
    3. For the underwater scenes, his visor could be flipped up so he could be given an oxygen mask between shots. His face was painted orange for these scenes.

@@WallyHartshorn Except how do you explain why the aliens decide to do something so drastic as revealing themselves to the world if it wasn't for the parts they cut. It literally doesn't make any sense if you really think about it without the parts that were cut. And don't reveal what it is because they haven't seen it yet and I want them to watch it. Also, remember this movie is 1989, that only became a "trope" after many other movies did it. And you can't argue that an alien race wouldn't see our actions in a negative light especially after the fact that they just tried to nuke them...

This entire film was shot underwater for real they flooded an old reactor cooling tower and put tones of black beads in the water to cut out the sunlight to make it really dark underwater. They lit the set with under water lights and rigged up cameras to work underwater. The interior sets where in a sound stage but anything shot outside those sets was under the water. All the actors had to learn how to scuba dive and the water was cold cause they could not heat the tank cause it caused to much fog. Pretty epic what they achieved on this film
