On TG4 Sibín about 1998, with the late great Ronnie, Mike Hanrahan, Frank Kilkelly, John Faulkner, Paul Johnson (Double bass) and (unknown to me) on drums
Rest in Peace Ronnie. I was actually on the set of Sibin the day this was recorded and I had the privilege of meeting the great man himself. He gave me his autograph on a sheet of paper along with everybody else’s signature which I still have over 20 years later.
@@frankkilkelly6393 That’s awesome Frank. There are few songs out there that can only be brought to life by few men. Ronnie was one such man. My Dad Jim Johnston was also there playing music that day. It was a great experience seeing how a television show was put together. It’s a shame Síbín never continued. It had such a great concept at its heart. I definitely think TG4 should revisit it. Although I think it was Gaelmedia that produced it.
You’re right it was a Gael Media production. They considered revisiting it during COVID…. I remember Jim, in fact his name came up with a man called Red Johnston in Seattle a few years ago, and I was able to show Red the clip of Jim here - have you seen it? I don’t remember correctly, but perhaps Red is a relation?
@@frankkilkelly6393 I don’t think he’s a relation. I must ask Dad. I have seen the episode a few times. I remember a video tape coming in the post of the entire episode. If I remember correctly, Ronnie did a few takes of his songs until he was happy with them. That was a Sunday afternoon and the show was being transmitted that evening! No pressure!! I have really fond memories of that day. I was only 16 and was really into television production and I got a tour of the studio. The whole crew were really welcoming. I remember lots of photos being taken, but sadly I don’t have any. I do still have the sheet of paper with everyone’s autograph somewhere!
What an absolute legend he was. I love this version of the song. Delightful to see this performance.
Rip ronnie a great lost for ireland

I was there too, playing with him on the day. It is a treasured memory.

Ah well when I dragged my sons back to Eire 4 weddings and funerals and baptisms ... they loved and still do these songs!
A great song. first heard it on John Wayne's "The Quiet Man" and have loved it since.

Ronny Drew is in my heart song by U2
The humour it found me twice in my life,
but I'm happy to say I never did find me a wife.
my dads favourite song
I will die on this hill;
It's a sin and a shame that Ronnie Drew and Johnny Cash never made music together.
Johnny Cash did want Barney McKenna to join him in America but Barney was too fond of Ireland and declined
