    The swordfish is difficult to spot. It requires you to put all possible numbers in empty cells, which is a lot of work.
    Watch for monthly tutorials When you subscribe you will be notified when a new tutorial is uploaded.
    This puzzle can be solved without the swordfish. Look at this video as a demonstration of the swordfish. It is possible to solve this puzzle without using the swordfish technique. I used this puzzle to demonstrate how to spot a swordfish pattern.
    It has been pointed out that ta 2.30 I could have eliiminated the 6 at the top due to a 6 being below.. Thanks to "reconllc" for letting me know. I should have explained the blocks 1 2 and 3 and left out the rest of the numbers below. Also you will probably see that I put 2 ones in block 8. My mistake. It doesn't change the secenario however. the ones could have easily be left out of the scenario.
    NEW you can now go to my web site and see an INDEX OF VIDEOS under strategy headings. Clcik on the number and it will take you to the video of interest. www.sudokuguy.com

    Thank you for explaining the swordfish thoroughly. This is the first time I hear it explained this way, and it made sense to me. I think the idea that you started with an almost blank sudoku, showing only the pattern we are looking for, made it really easy to grab this otherwise tough and advanced technique. then showing it in a puzzle, and the ramifications made it clear how to apply this technique. Thank you!

    X-Wing, Y-Wing, W-Wing, Swordfish, Skyscraper etc, etc. All clever techniques for solving those frustratingly difficult puzzles. Makes perfect logical sense. Spotting these structures is the real problem....

    Thank you Suduko Guy for all your illustrative videos. Up to a few months ago, I thought the most difficult puzzles gravitated to finding naked/hidden subsets, which I found pretty tedious (downright boring). But recent exposure to the structural solving strategies (wings, fish, shashimi etc) has made the game infinitely more interesting to me. Your videos have been a great help in introducing the concepts. And yes, while these structures are not easy to spot, as with everything else, this improves with practice.

    I think it's difficult to spot a swordfish earlier on. This one was extremely simple for demonstration purposes, but when I do really difficult sudoku puzzles, there are times when the swordfish isn't as apparent. Sometimes with what looks like multiple swordfish patterns. Obviously there is only one, but finding it is quite difficult, and I'd be interested in learning exactly how to spot it. Solving it is the easy part.

    • @SudokuGuy

      +Werewolf211 You are right..Many of the advanced patterns are difficult to spot. The only thing I can suggest is to do many of them. Practice helps. They are difficult to spot in that they can appear both vertically and horizontally.

    Yours seemed the most lucid description of the Swordfish in sudoku. Yet a dunce like me fails to see a Swordfish pattern, even when pointed out one in solved puzzle.I understand, 3 rows each containing 2-3 positions for the same candidate must be crossed by 3 colums

  • @ganeshkrishnan4285
    @ganeshkrishnan4285 4 года назад +1

    In a swordfish, each column or row should have only two numbers in a square. For eg. 19 & 19 in column 1, 19 & 69 in column 3 and not 169, 29 & 69 in column 5 and not 289 or 689. Not very clear why you take only 2 digits with one of them 9.

    If I have this correct - The thing here that needs more EMPHASIS is the idea that the swordfish nines are part of a pair and also rows or columns. All other nines are not part of nines (even if in pairs) are not part of row and also columns. So, on the bottom row, the 1,9 and 6,9 combo, are not included because they are NOT in columns as well as rows and pairs (even though it is a given they are excluded because they are a 4th row-column and the swordfish is limited to 3)...........as I said "If I have this correct".

    At the 1:45 minute mark you indicate that the 7, 8, 9 can go in Block #9. I assume also that 7 can go in Block #3 and 8 & 9 can also go in Block #6. Is this correct? If this is correct then isn't that a lot of data that might not be helpful in solving the puzzle? For example 7 could go in 5 squares in Block #3.

    • @SudokuGuy
      @SudokuGuy  8 лет назад

      +MrAnalogEE This was purely a scenario to show what could be done with block 9. You are right in that a 7 could go in 5 places in block 6. Even with advanced puzzles I suggest that you use the techniques I have taught earlier in the course which mention that you avoid putting all the possible numbers in until later in the puzzle..I hope this clarifies.

    Would the Swordfish work with 4 rows/columns having 3 places for the same number? I.e can you expand it as long as you keep the amount of unknowns per row/column fewer than the amount of columns? I'm imagining an analogy with determined differential equations etc..?

    AM I missing something? This puzzle at 2:11 is riddled with errors, and in fact is not solvable..
    first,row two, given teh 6 7 8 in row 1, implies that 678 must be in the first three columns of row 2, as he notes, but the candidates in row 2 of the first three columns would be 78, 678, 678, not 678,678, 78 as he depicts, given the 6 already in column 1 of row 7. OK, typo, but sloppy. It get worse----the positions of the GIVEN entries, not candidates, of 7,8,and 9 in the last three columns present an impossibility in the first three row of those columns (call it a box, upper right). The existing 7's and 8's in the the columns 7 and 8 require that the remaining 7 and 8 in occupy the 9th column, both in that upper right box, confined to ROWS 2 AND 3, but that is contrary to the requirement that Both 7 and 8 occupy row two in columns 1 thru 3, as we first noted. I think it is clear that, in an effort to illustrate the techniques, he did not start with an actual puzzle, but instead made up what looks be a puzzle with some cells filled in for his convenience. Fine , for the purposes of his demo I suppose, but he is killing his credibility here. Good God man, clean this up!!!

    The swordfish is a very interesting technique, though I will feel a bit uneasy about using it, as I wouldn't feel confident with it. Also, I am going to be a bit pedantic here but wouldn't you have achieved the same result if you would have realised that the 7 goes on the bottom line of the bottom right quadrant by 12:00? ;)
