1971 was the first year the 340 was available in the Road Runner. Remember the insurance companies were hammering on the muscle cars. The 340 was a lot easier it afford the insurance on. Besides the 340 was no slouch and didn't give much up to the 383. The air grabber hood was also a rare option, especially with a 340. I remember when we got the first 71s at the dealership. In my opinion they were the best looking of all the B body cars.

Man what a beautiful car...71-72 RR is my favorite muscle car. Cruise control in an RR!! Actually the color is Bahama Yellow...one of my favorite Mopar colors, so very different. Butterscotch for Dodge. the 340 was sold as an alternative to the big blocks for insurance purposes...insurance rates were killing the muscle car segment. I remember an ad from the day, with a 'insurance salesman' showing the 'standard' policy you could get with the small block RR. OTH, the 340 was a screamer...I had a '68 Barracuda 340 S and it was a very fast car. thx to this great couple showing off their beautiful car!
Love this Body style! Hardly see these at all. I always gave MOPAR lots of Credit for being a little different. And different is a Good Thing, a Very Good Thing!

Great car, great color, great couple. I had one of these, bought it new from Johnny's County Motors in Oaklyn, NJ. Mine was a B5 blue automatic with a radio, heater, and a hemi suspension with 8 inch wide black steel wheels and dog dish caps. Very aerodynamic styling still very appealing to me today. His friend's story about running out of 383 V8's and replacing them with 340's late in the model year would explain why you don't see any 340 V8 option in the 1971 Satellite/Road Runner/GTX brochure. Brochures are typically made at the beginning of the model year, at which point Chrysler/Plymouth apparently didn't realize there was going to be a 383 shortage some months later.

Back in 1982 me and a friend used to get part's from a 68 super bee that was that same color with black top and trim.Sad to know that car rotted away to nothing.
In high school I worked with a guy who had a no rust, decent olive green Satellite Sebring Plus, which is a one trim line down model from this. The guy got into meth, so I stopped hanging around him. A few months later I found his car in the pick a part wrecking yard. It was still straight, so no idea why it was in death row. That car was rare then, so I never understood how his car ended up there. Impounded maybe? If that guy wanted to trash his life then that's his path to choose, but what a waste of that car. Anyways, that's my story of why people shouldn't do meth.

And I had the sister ship to this car in the 80's..a '71 Satellite Sebring Plus! My 1st car. She had a '74 cop 440 under the hood. 727 AT & 3.55 SG. Pw, Pdb, am/fm stereo. Previous owner painted it to be a clone of Daisy Dukes car. Yup. Original paint was Inviolet, Plymouth's name for Plum Crazy. No way.. ..must've been a dream..

The 340 is still a great engine in a B-Body, if you were a younger buyer at the time it might cost less to insure than a big block.

My 1st car. She had a '74 cop 440 under the hood. 727 AT & 3.55 SG. Pw, Pdb, am/fm stereo.
Previous owner painted it to be a clone of Daisy Dukes car. Yup.
Original paint was Inviolet, Plymouth's name for Plum Crazy.
