How to Tie the Lobster Buoy Hitch - Underrated and Very secure Hitch

  • The Lobster-Buoy Hitch is very secure knot, but very underrated! According to Art of Knotting and Splicing, by Day; United States Naval Institute; it is a very secure hitch, "would be useful, if it were better known, on a variety of occasions." Ashley's Book of Knots 1714 "The Lobster Buoy Hitch was shown to me years ago by John B. Cornell, of Cuttyhunk, who used it for about every purpose and claimed it was particularly good to tie to timber. As the chief industry of Cuttyhunk was wrecking, I value his opinion highly on such a point. The knot is tied tightly around the standing part and then is slipped along the rope snugly into place."
    Maybe we could start a revolution and spread the word about the qualities of the Lobster-Buoy Hitch?

    I use this now on camp tarps through the grommet and taut line hitch on the other side it worked pretty well for me

      @KnottingKnots  2 дня назад +1

      Just wondering if you have ever used an simpler knots through the grommet, and what results you had?

    • @truejohnsolo
      @truejohnsolo 2 дня назад

      @@KnottingKnots I mean this is a pretty simple knot already. What would a simpler alternative be? Perhaps just two half hitches but I don't think it would be as secure as this and it's not really any simpler.

    After a few ties of this knot I couldn't help but notice it seems to be a cousin-of-sorts to the Taut Line hitch. Nice vid and nice knot, it'll get some use from me, thanks Mr Debt.

    Ashley book of knots #1126 Tag knot, ties a cow hitch on a looped rope. Can't for the life of me figure out the drawn path :)
    Do you know it?

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  3 месяца назад +2

      With that knot, what I do is as follows; make the shape as shown in figure 1126(a), then I put my hand in through the loop fromed where the arrow is, reach up and pull both leads through the loop (this follows what the arrow is showing), you only need enough pulled through to create another loop. I have found that you then need to just rearrange the line above so that there are no crossing points. Well that was as clear as mud???

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  3 месяца назад

      Forgot to say, the initial loop you have is not the final loop. When you pull the two lines through to create the second loop, that is the final loop. the first loop at the beginning forms part of the knot.

      @@KnottingKnots 👍🏻 I just needed to realise the arrow "hooks" the part to pull through
      1st loop made using the cow hitch fold over technique.
      undoing it is just as mind boggling!

    Your practice hitching post has me interested. It looks easy enough to make. Just curious about some dimensions.. 4 tee, 6 caps, 3/4" (19 mm ) copper pipe ? 25 or 30 cm wide ? 15 cm tall x 2 sides. Am I close? Learning a lot of new knots by watching you past videos. You do a great job instructing.. Thank you.

    You showed a 3 inch Turks head knot on some tubing a long time ago but never showed how to finish it off. Now I'm left with dangling ends.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  2 года назад

      If your TH is covering an object, then gently go round and take out all the slack. Once it is really tight, cut and tuck the ends under. If however your TH is going to remain open, seize the loose strands to the previous turns. Seizing: ruclips.net/video/wkcVKJO8SB8/видео.html
