In the letter that Zenitsu just received, he learns that his master has committed seppuku (suicide) because Kaigaku (who we learn in Gyomei’s backstory also led a demon to an orphan house to kill everyone as long as it spared him) became a demon (specifically upper moon 6). Since the master taught Kaigaku he had to kill himself. So now Zenitsu is livid and will train to kill Kaigaku for what he has done. Hope this helped
I really love this anime version. In most anime adaptation, it was a bit rushed and throw out some details. But, these adaptation is more detailed then the manga. In the manga, it only shows the details for Stone Hashira's training because they want to explain Gyomei's backstory. In this anime, they even show the kind of trainings that Tanjiro underwent in other Hashiras' training and not just a preview of it.
You know, I feel sorry for Kaigaku. His story is the story of a guy who was down on his luck. All the “bad” things he did were just trying to survive. Is a character "bad" if his goal is his life. Save your life. He was unlucky to find himself in the same situation 2 times in front of an enemy whom he cannot kill, and when he can choose to live or die. Essentially, he is “bad” because he chose to live rather than die.
