I am an Old School Flatland Rider from Kansas City. The New Style of Flatland in my opinion is Mind Blowing and Super Hard to do. I personally like the 80's -90:s Style of Flatland. Much better to Comprehend than the spinning tricks on one tire of today. I am Big Fan of Matt Wilhelm. He is the New Kevin Jones..........BMX BRIGADE FOR LIFE.
Man, I miss these days. I know we all look back with Rose tinted glasses but this was such a good era in the pre social media days. Not only has modern flatland become so indistinguishable in terms of style, but I think social media has played a huge part in eroding the general Stoke. I remember you'd see a photo in a magazine of a rider mid switch or trick and your brain had to fill in the pieces. You'd then wait until you saw them ride at a comp or in a video segment to see how it worked. In a way the tricks and the style they were executed became a celebrity in themselves as much as the rider. Everyone was so recognizable by their style, it was great times, I miss it
Extremely well said. Not only is everything you said true, but remember, then there was no war, there was no propaganda, there was no cultural revolution, no plandemics, no fear of global destruction. Rose tinted eyes indeed. I wish you all the luck in the world, especially in this present decade without brakes.
awesome, I remember reading in Ride Uk that you guys had captured this footage, and wondering if I would ever get to see it, me living in the caribbean, guess one can always dream, thanks for posting this!!
You're so right! 90's flat is what got me into riding. If I was watching the spinning crap they were doing now, I probably would've taken up another hobby!
Really bad day for Osicka,he had the most mind blowing tricks of them all!All our video tapes were busted on his parts because we were playing them frame by frame to figure out what the fuck he was doing
hellalegitbmx= bikes in 90s weighed 32-35lbs, its a lot harder to keep a bike of this weight moving and balanced. switch foot scuffing tricks and scuffing don't work well with the pumping style of the modern flatland! new school flat is not as technical either, so this is why you don't see feet dabbing that much in comps any more. its all about speed and flow now a days! what a trooper phil dolan is carrying on reguardless, when his freecoaster keeps dying on him...!
so that is why I can't figure out pumping tricks, a heavy bike? I get a few here or there, but nothing that feels like I could do it a lot. I've rode since 85 - I ride a Blammo from 2000 and it is heavy. I can't even keep the old john donut like I used to. I never thought a heavy bike could hinder that, but it is heavier than my master I used back in '89 to learn the trick.
My current 86 skyway street beat is 25 pounds.I had a 98 dyno air that was a freaking tank 11 years ago. I think it was 35 pounds, but still $20 bike, lol. Old freestyler bikes were always 23-26 pounds depending which brand, haro masters and the hutch trickstars were super light. Last night after riding my friends 86 haro and 86 skyway i rode my 2009 haro freestyler and wow it made those 2 bikes feel like paper, lol. The 09 freestyler felt safer and super sturdy compared to the older bikes, lol.

You are absolutely right today the flatland has become the same thing.. turn as quickly as possible in circles with all the same style of bike 😐
That's what a BMX with no breaks gets you, do the spin trick.
I think the old style will resurface in time. They can have stuffing and non-scuffing contests at the Olympics.
Love this! More please... good ole days!
Man, I don't even care what the new school riders are doing nowadays. I'd give ANYTHING to ride like how Day was riding back in the 90's!!!

Loved Day's and Paul's style but Phil's aggressiveness and technique really grabbed me! Those were the days people!!
Day Smith rocked that shit!
looks way better than what they are doing now.
By the end of the 90s, no one could touch Paul Osicka. He was one of the most original guys out there and eventually fell of the face of the earth.

6th Place? After watching he rest of the runs that are posted, that should have been in the top 2 easy. Day is still the man!
