I think it was Michael Farren who I heard say, "Don't write because you're inspired; write UNTIL it's inspired."

I sometimes will just be determined to write a song. Inspiration comes from things I'm reading, something I heard that tickles my brain, then it's like something goes to work and the craft produces a song.
Musically, sometimes I'll close my eyes and let my fingers hit notes. (Otherwise it's always dm or G for some reason)
The point is I dip my finger into the chaos and paint with that.

I only write when the muse strikes me, but I seem to get struck more often when I'm sitting with my pen and paper by my side and a guitar in my lap everyday.

Definitely part of the process, but you will start breaking through that. There’s tricks you can learn to get unstuck.
