Thank you for the reminder that it's ok for the year not to go the way we'd planned it. Focusing on the growth and progress rather than what we didn't accomplish!

Thanks for taking the time to make this update! I feel like our boys are very similar. Same age too! I was also drawn to Charlotte Mason, but my son’s brain just didn’t get it. He definitely learns way better through logic and having set rules, or someone pointing out the pattern to him and then it clicks! But I love your perspective! It’s a journey to find what works!

I love how you explained your process! We are HUGE fans of the Abeka program during the phonics years, particularly pre-k to 2nd grade. We dont use it as its intended; we focus more on the Handbook For Reading, phonics cards, a few of the readers, and we do the pages that we need more review with. It works great to build reading fluency, and we are blessed to have started with it in that crucial phonics stage 😊

I've been thinking about adding more unschooling elements where they are learning, but not in "sit down" formal school time (like you mentioned with art at the end). We already do it with art, like drawing and painting, and we just added sports, but I love the idea of doing it with other subjects too. We'll see!

I feel like our year is finishing out strong despite a rocky beginning. A few curriculum misses and listing, selling and moving combined really took a toll but after we got moved and settled in and got a new math program and dropped Fix It Grammar it’s been going really well!

We struggled with LA early on. Switched twice. Went ok after that, but realized this year that my daughter does best teaching herself with more independent curricula. So we’re switching some things to better suit that next year. Which works out well because I’ll be busy with a toddler and a newborn. 😊

    • @sciencemama

I had the same issue with that logic book. I switched my then rising 4th grader to Primarily Logic and it’s been a hit! It’s simpler and he understand much better. Highly recommend.

The green d'nelian handwriting company seems to be going out of print. It's hard to find. Is that why you selected the white book? Or is it a better program?

    • @sciencemama

Yes, the Scott Foreman editions are going out of print ... but I think that is because it was picked up by Savvs! So, the white one is the same handwriting program :)

I'm still using Sonlight but I'm supplementing with Logic of Engish for language arts. We are using Sonlight for history, bible, literature, science, and language arts (readers & composition). Haha, I really need to make a dedicated video on how I am combining SL and LOE :)

Glad you found something that worked for spelling! We’re using SCM’s Using Language We’ll and Spelling wisdom and enjoying it. I paid it, though, with Riggs phonics flash cards and spelling rules so they get the “why aspect.” There’s a free list online if you google it. I’ll also be incorporating in Fix It! Grammar for my 4th grader next year, too.
