    Yeah, so the Seestern is probably 20% better than the Frog in most areas, bracelet, lume, clasp, caseback etc. It is better than the Doxa in some areas as well! Let's see if they do indeed release V2s of each watch. Maybe that will be a future Watch Boxing Special. Cheers, Jody

I'm super happy that I'm sitting here with my Seestern with the mother of pearl dial on wrist. I wanted the orange but switched to the mop when I saw it. It's superb. The Heimdallr website actually sells Tactical Frogs but I don't know the connection between them. For me the Seestern name had some gravitas and a serious brand identity plus it wasn't slightly comical. You've made my day. 😀👍

    I've just received the Tactical Frog v1.5. They removed the brand name from the face but still the tachy bezel (which I didn't mind). I think the dial with applied indices looks a bit nicer than the flat printed dial. Keeping excellent time, and I think they adjusted the AR coating on this one. I don't seem to have the issues reviewers have pointed out with glare until an extreme angle. The biggest con is undoubtedly the bracelet, which I hope I can find a higher-end replacement for.

    I’m researching these and I fell in love with them, I think they might’ve listened to you Jody the version two has a loomed PIP the height is thinner by 1.1 mm and it’s got five coats of AR coating. It looks like in Canada they are only available on eBay and they’re $248. The brand new tactical frog version two is $30 cheaper. I’m kind of torn but I like the drilled lugs and the useable bezel for timing things on the Seestern.

    Just a comment on the bezel ( I scrolled for ages and didn't see anyone else cover this, so apologies if someone did), that's not a "tacky" scale. It's the US Navy non-decompression dive limit tables (20 minutes at 110 feet as example). This was Doxa's signature trick...that and the minute hand being larger than the hour. Both features being very useful in the golden age of diving. Although I disagree, the "nobody dives with a watch" comments will now commence............

  • @JohanDee
    @JohanDee 2 года назад +1

    Hah! I did the same, first bought the Tactical Frog and then noticed the Seestern (pronounced Zay Stern) on the German watchforum, which didn't have the wrong bezel and even a lumed date wheel. As soon I had the Seestern, I sold the Tactical Frog, for what I paid for and the Seestern was even cheaper in the end. Cannot be more happy with this watch for the price. My own niggle would be, that the letters on the dial are somewhat thin, I like it more how Doxa did it and indeed, comparing the hands, they are indeed somewhat shorter and the hour hand is kinda small. I have the same color dial btw...

  • @oktc68
    @oktc68 2 года назад

    They got a lumed date on their Monster too. I've had a Suub 300T homage from Seestern for around a year now, what a great little watch. Has stood up extremely well, the bracelet was a little stiff when new but gained articulation after a couple of months, It's very comfortable, a wee bit light if anything (many of my divers are over 200grams). I'm really happy with it, in fact my only mild criticism would be of the lume, it's not the brightest but does have decent longevity, just needs to be properly dark in order to see it after an hour, it's still visible (in complete darkness) at four hours. If you can live with the homage thing, then Seestern offer fantastic watches for little money, and if you pick one of the Doxa homages, not many people will be aware of the that brand. For £150 or so you're getting a beautiful Doxa design with a solid Seiko movement, well made from good quality materials. Could always spend a bit more and get a Seiko 5 (I think mine is a V3, it also has a lume pip on the bezel. I have two Seestern's both V3, my buddy has a V2 300T and I think the later versions are often where all the issues are corrected without any new ones replacing them. Wish they offered a PT5000 or even a Swiss movement in this and there other Doxa homage) No issues with it at all and it's worn very wel.l

    Got to like the Mop dial/Sharkhunter. I’ve a bund strap that’s just waiting for it, for that “3 days of the Condor” vibe.
    Seestern has done a pretty good job from what I’ve seen. Bought my original 300T for about $250 second hand circa 1996. Paid around $1000 for the first reissue circa 2000/2001. Both are Professionals which is orange in Doxa parlance. I’d still recommend saving up for the real deal but if you want a homage for everyday wear, you won’t cry as much if you smash it into a valve by accident.

    I think the minute hand is fine, IMO the Doxa minue hand is too long. But I wish they'd widen the hour hand. But even if they don't I may have to get used to it, I love the look and I've been wanting an orange dial watch.

    What happens to lume when date flips at midnight? Wouldn't that bring a non-charged bit of the date wheel into the window? How does this work in actual practice?

    Nice Review Jody but the cushion case is not my taste. I stick with traditional round case.

    What a nice piece! I am glad there is an alternative to the tactical frog. Just imagine a tactical frog doing covert ops with a dive watch and weapons- just gotta laugh every time I read or hear the name.

    I also bought a tactical frog. Quality issues, couple of small paint chips under the dial, also pins are too close to case so difficult to fit many other straps.

    I bought the Pagani one as I lacked a NH38 in my collection ticking all the NHxx's. I would have prob have gone with the Seestern otherwise as their orange seems to be a much brighter version but hey ho am pleased with the PD one save there are some niggles like the rattley bracelet and no easy way to get the bracelet adjusted to that sweet spot plus the clasp pops open but it does have the NH38 in which is why I bought it in the first place.

    Pretty impressive for the price. I hope luxury brands are taking notice, there may be another 'Quartz Crisis' level reckoning coming now that consumers know how much these watches can be produced for, in house movements aside.

    Kudos on the name - definitely thoughtful. Some names are great in one language, but not in all. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Doesn't have much AR coating either - both minor issues.

    My skinny wrists might actually be able to pull this off; Find myself drawn to the yellow one the most, oddly enough. Maybe because I don't have a yellow dial yet?

    Howdy Jody, do you have any videos showcasing how to fully build an SKX013 from scratch? Basically where to buy parts and what not. Super new to watches, would really help.

    When the two are held side by side, you can really see how the finishing on the Doxa's bezel makes it much more legible than the bezel on the Seestern.

    Nice watch but I reckon if they lengthen the hour hand, use applied indices, (printed makes it look cheap) add a lume dot at the 12 and redo the 130, 140 Arabics etc then it would be a real winner!

    One thing that bothers me about the seestern is the case shape from the front. I compared the Doxa 300t and the seestern side by side and noticed the seesterns case from the front looks bulkier than the Doxas case so much so that to me it takes away from the vibe that I was attracted to in the original. The bulkiness is right around where the lugs are. Details are important for that reason I wont buy the seestern.

    Not bad. For a higher-quality Doxa alternative, the NTH DevilRay models are good to check out though - then you get to skip all the weird design issues like pointless scales, things that should rotate that aren't rotating, etc...

    The Great Wave off Bikini Bottom!!! LOL! Takes the watch from a homage to more of a campy, fun watch, that doesn't take itself too seriously. Perfect! I also appreciate a Scot reviewing watches. They are known to be er... frugal, so that adds to the recommendation.
