- Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental health condition characterized by intolerance of criticism, control freaks, manipulative behavior, and a strong need for constant attention and admiration. People with this disorder often see a personal attack where there is none, and may feel deeply hurt or angry if they do not receive the special treatment they expect. The central feature of narcissistic individuals is a distorted sense of personal values and self-image, paradoxically accompanied by a lack of inner self-confidence. It's worth noting that while self-confidence and some self-interested behavior is healthy and natural, narcissistic personality disorder is much more extreme and can cause significant difficulties in the person's relationships and overall quality of life.
People with narcissistic personality disorder often appear confident and strong, but inside they can be extremely sensitive to criticism or rejection. They often have a hard time dealing with stress, failure, or not receiving the recognition they expect. These difficulties cause problems in work, family and social relationships.
Narcissism is not easily treated because those affected often do not recognize that they have a problem and, as a result, do not seek help. The goal of therapy is usually to develop a more realistic self-esteem, understand healthy relationships with others, and develop conflict management skills. Narcissism is on a spectrum, and almost everyone has a healthy narcissism, which is what it takes to thrive in life. The problem starts when it becomes too much.
