      Obviously, after all these years I have to say that we think a lot of Pink Double Delight. It is now a well and truly.... "tried and true" selection, that is well worth growing.
      It was interesting when I was conversing with Arie Blom (the now, world famous breeder), he told me that very early on in his breeding career, this selection occurred!
      And he went on to say, that he has repeated the same cross many times since, and nothing like it has ever reoccurred again!
      I remember him telling me "I was lucky, I guess"!

      With coneflowers, good drainage is essential, so in areas with clay based soils, it is important to consider growing them on raised beds, that will help to aid drainage and keep the crowns drier in winter and early spring.

      "Thank you, it is very kind of you to take the time to tell us, thanks for the subscription.
      You can separate them in Autumn, but David 's favorite time is early spring, that way the newly divided pieces don't have to sit in wet, possibly (at times) saturated and frozen conditions during the winter. So the success rate is likely to be higher doing it in early spring before growth starts.
      Don't forget to keep us posted of progress, we will be interested to hear how you get on. Also, as you view any of our other videos (here on this channel), it would be great if you could kindly share any of them (that you find useful) with your friends too".

    I bought orange coneflower plant in 2022. This year it did not bloom orange , but my other older purple coneflowers are all blooming, some white have showed up through the 10 years I’ve had the purples. I thought the orange has been cross pollinated by the bees , and converted back to purple. Which seems to be the wild form colour. I live in central Indiana. Farmland around our small city. Is this possible. And I have never purchased or planted white coneflowers. 9/4/2023. My finches love eating the seed of the coneflowers. Thank you

      The original native species (Echinacea purpurea) is genetically dominant, so when your orange selection, which is hybrid with other native species (that's where the orange color came from), flowered and set seed, the seedlings reverted back to the purple/pink characteristics of this species.
      Your "older" purples are descended from this species too, but they were likely cultivated selections and somewhere in their genetic background there may have been recessive white genes which came to the fore in these generations. Or, it could be that visiting butterflies or pollinating insects (who can travel surprisingly long distances and love the nectar rich coneflowers) carried in the pollen from white ones!
      It is great that you are leaving the seed for your finches (they absolutely adore coneflower seed), but along with that comes the possibility of self-sown seedlings, so in spring weeding out the seedlings as they emerge might be necessary.

    My Purple coneflowers came from seed originally in a perennial mix instead of the hybrid types so I'm wondering if using the seeds will suffice in planting new ones instead of dividing? Unless I misunderstood dividing would be needed for hybrid types

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Год назад +2

      It is beneficial to divide all of these types. It keeps them vigorous and flowering better. If you rely on self-seeded ones only, eventually those with dominant genetic characteristics show up and any with recessive genes like other colors, horizontal petals, compact habit etc. fade away.
      So, if there's any you particularly like and want to keep, then it is important to divide them and weed out any you don't prefer.

      @OverdevestNurseries  3 месяца назад +2

      Thanks, it is great to hear you are finding our efforts helpful.
      The answer to your question is that YES, they can be successfully divided in the cool, weather of autumn and especially if your soil is sandy and free draining.
      That said, if you were talking to David, he would probably tell you that his favorite time is early spring, because that lessens any possibility of plants becoming too wet in saturated, clay laden soils in winter or during snow melt.
      So if your soil is free draining (which of course is what coneflowers like), then both times work well.
      We hope this helps, have you subscribed to our channel yet?

      Thanks for watching.
      We are somewhat surprised to hear of your issues with Coneflowers because normally they are fairly free of disease issues.
      As long as they are growing in open, free draining, sunny spots, with plenty of air movement they normally don't get infected with many diseases.
      That said, if you continue to be concerned about your plants, your local extension office or a knowledgeable local master gardener may be able to help.
      Nowadays there's also online self-diagnosis websites that can help you get to the root of the problem and there's even online courses like this one from Penn State: extension.psu.edu/plant-health-diagnosis-assessing-plant-diseases-pests-and-problems that will take you through the learning process, where you can delve in in much more detail. We hope this helps.

    • @janicemartin5955
      @janicemartin5955 Год назад +2

      I am pretty sure that seeds from a hybrid will revert to one of the original plants. To get more hybrids they must be a plant division.

    • @glenncordova4027
      @glenncordova4027 Год назад +2

      The seed grow easily. I have saved and grown the seeds several times. Because they are hybrids, you never know what you are going to get. If you want something that looks exactly like the parent plant, then you must use divisions, which are clones of the parent.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Год назад +1

      Thank you Janice and Glenn, it is very kind of you both to accurately chip in on this.
      Dividing them helps to keep the clumps vigorous and strong growing, and because you are vegetatively reproducing the plant, the offspring will be exactly the same.
      As Glenn mentions when you try to grow these hybrids from seed, the seedlings usually come up displaying characteristics that are considerably different to the parent, so you never know what you are going to get. Some might be ok, and some might even be nice, but most of the time you are likely to get throwbacks to the original species (which may or may not be to your liking). Anyway, its fun to try.
      But if you wish to retain the original selection, then it is best to dead head them to keep them lush, vigorous and make sure that rouge seedlings don't sprout up inside the crown and take over. Which regrettably happens to neglected plants and sometimes leads the owners to think that the plants have reverted.

      Yes, it works in the cool, moist weather of autumn too. Just be sure that the soil in the new position is free draining, they won't like it if it lies wet in winter and early spring. Yes, they can be divided in the cooler weather of Autumn and it works well, providing the soil is free draining and doesn't lie wet and sticky during the winter and early spring.
      However, David prefers doing it in early spring because as the weather warms up and the plants begin to grow, they have the shortest time sitting dormant in the cool moist conditions.
