  • Mike Huckabee is a big believer in religious freedom, but how far does his commitment to that religious freedom for other religions actually go? Ana Kasparian (The Point), and John Iadarola (Think Tank), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Huckabee began to discuss Chancellor Jeffrey Atherton, who last week dismissed a divorce complaint in an attempt to prove a dickish point about allowing gays to marry ...
Mika Brzezinski then interrupted Huckabee in an attempt to get him to answer the question. “Would you support a clerk who would not give Kim Davis a third or a fourth marriage license? You?”
Huckabee responded that he wasn’t sure he followed this very simple question. “You’re asking a question of a different nature,” he said. “There’s a difference between a marriage between a man and a woman or a marriage between two men and a marriage between two women...””*

I'd be fine giving Christians special rights. Unfortunately I've read the bible and there hasn't been a Christian in America for a couple decades now..
Perhaps when one shows up, Huckabee can let me know and we can come back to this subject..

Well why not just throw out the book and write out your own list of things you think is correct?
Surely thats easier than searching through a few hundred pages looking for a verse to validate something you're already thinking/doing anyway?

I love how this is apparently a 'problem' The problem is religious people, claiming to follow their holy book, and then cherry picking verses, and chapters, and deciding most of it doesn't apply to them. But, they think it should apply to others. Either follow all of it, or not at all.

How did she even get the job, let alone maintain it for this long?
Religious concessions are never the correct answer. Both Kim Davis and that Muslim exemplify perfectly how religion deteriorates a society built on community and teamwork by teaching, “Only you matter.” Religion has held humans back for centuries and it is time for it to go. #StampOutReligion

Regarding the stewardess who refused to serve alcohol.
When she had accepted the job and went through training she must have had to accept and deal with this part of the job. There is no way she couId not have not known that this was expected of her. So by refusing to serve alcohol she is in effect violating her employment contract. For this she should be reprimanded or fired.
I would never have accommodated her beliefs after-the-fact.

As for the Muslim attendant, she should find another job.

I don't get why this is so difficult. A person gets a job, the job description is presented and the employee agrees to offer the labor to get that job done for which they receive compensation. If an employee is unable to fulfill the job description then the job is not for that person. Why is that hard to understand? As for religion in a public school, no way. We are forced to send our kids to school even if we can't come up with the money for a private school. Don't preach to other people's kids or provide them with special privilege for their parents religious preferences. As for prisons, yes, they are restrained and must live in that restraint which prevents them from being able to engage in their faith, so some reasonable provisions should be accepted no matter what the religion is. This to avoid cruel and unusual punishment. What's the problem? It's clear as day.

  • @erikatheicyone

  • @JamanWerSonst

I don't get why politicians deflect so often. In my opinion is makes them look very bad.
If I see shit like as an supporter I'd think this man is weak, if I see it as an undecided voted I'd think this man is weak and if I see this as someone who doesn't like him anyway I'd think he is a weak idiot.
So he loses with all three groups.
If he'd just straight up say what he thinks he might piss off some people, but he would also win some people over.
I don't know... is it just me, or is this avoiding to answer questions actually just really dumb?

    • @mystyc0
      @mystyc0 9 лет назад +3

+JamanWerSonst _"I don't get why politicians deflect so often."_
Because they can get away with it. Our system does not punish politicians for being evasive, and so they have learned that it is okay to be evasive. It is sort of like how cops keep shooting unarmed civilians for no reason. There is neither accountability nor punishment to dissuade such actions, and their training actually seems to _encourage_ such behavior, thus it continues to spiral out of control.
More often this sort of thing makes voters stay home, especially when so many politicians do it, and I don't blame them. Scenes like this turn people off of politics, rather than merely off of a particular candidate.

    • @ZombieWerePrechaunPire
      @ZombieWerePrechaunPire 9 лет назад

+JamanWerSonst Huckabee surprises me more and more. Based on the logic he uses for religious liberty, why didnt he just say yes to the question? I find the analogy almost to be almost the exact situation, in fact its a little bit cleaner if anything. But no he just seem to care about Christians only. He's not very good at deflecting. It couldnt be more obvious what he is doing.
Btw: I like the orange on Ana.

They already have special rights... tax exemption and freedom to think and say crazy things. The problem here is they think they have the right to "EXERCISE" their religious beliefs. Absolutely not so. They have the right to HAVE and even EXPRESS their beliefs, but when they say, _exercise_ they're talking about _acting_ according to their beliefs. You can think and say what you want, within reason, but _exercising_ is action and you are not free to act in any way you please, just because you think your arbitrary interpretation of your self-professed faith says you can. It is not even possible to "exercise ones religious beliefs." Exercising steps outside of the realm of thought expression and belief and crosses over into physical agency. Believe as you want, but you cannot DO as you please. The two are clearly separate things.

There is an obvious difference between Kim Davis's case, and the flight attendant. (I'm not justifying either case, just pointing out a key difference)
Muslims are required by their religion not to SERVE alcohol to other people. The prohibition is not just on them drinking it themselves.
Christians are NOT required by their religion to deny marriage certificates to homosexuals other than themselves. There may (or may not) be a prohibition on them entering into a homosexual marriage themselves.
(In both cases, this is the most obvious literal translation of the texts)
    source for the muslim claim:
"Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3380.
It was reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "God’s curse falls on ten groups of people who deal with alcohol. The one who distills it, the one for whom it has been distilled, the one who drinks it, the one who transports it, the one to who it has been brought, the one whom serves it, the one who sells it, the one who utilizes money from it, the one who buys it and the one who buys it for someone else."

I predict that in the future we will have a new version of democracy and law different from our current democracy, called "tribalism" which means we all live in the same nation, but are subject to different laws based upon our tribe (Religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, race etc.) Fundamentalist Mormons (not the main LDS church) want to allow polygamy because the founder of their religion encouraged it. Europe is already experimenting with laws that hold that Muslims live under Islamic laws and customs for marriage so that their divorce proceedings are handled by Islamic religious figures in their communities instead of the legal courts; now Muslims in Europe want to be able to punish fellow Muslims for drinking alcohol even though alcohol is legal in Europe....... In the US, some Native Americans have asked courts to allow them to smoke Peyote (a mind altering substance from a plant) since they have smoked it for religious ceremonies for a long time - the Supreme court said no. Perhaps gay people will have seperate courts for divorce with different laws or procedures with gay judges. Who knows. It is interesting to see that people could be given a choice of law or court in the same jurisdiction depending on their tribal membership. Courts could be composed of judges and jurors from your group to alleviate claims of court bias, racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia or religious discrimination. If a woman sues another woman for a car accident injury, should they be entitled to an all female court? If a Black person is charged with a crime, should they be entitled to an all Black jury so as to avoid a claim of racism? These are interesting questions. A person could select (within reason) the system of laws and courts based upon what group they belong to. Will this help or hurt our country?

Lol! This reminds me of a guy I worked alongside once in a Hollywood make-up fx shop. I was working on a (shitty) horror flick and he was on some other sci-fi flick. We started talking about his and my former christianity and come to find out he won't work on horror flicks because of his religion. I said something like, "Why do you work in this industry then?". He said what we all say, because he loves it. But seriously, if your religious convictions keep you from doing a job you love, WHY??
    Is it really worth it?
I'm guessing he went on to work on the "Left behind" series or some christian crap... That or he gave it up because his religion got in the way.

So uhm, when interviewing for the job, one is usually asked "is there anything keeping you from performing the duties outlined?" and when you check "no", you get to do it. Or risk being fired.
If you said "yes", you'd be asked why and would have to say "my religion forbids..." and most likely would be thanked for stopping by and never hear from those employers again.

I love how TYT lie to manipulate a story. There were accommodations set aside for the Muslim flight attendant. There not any set aside for Davis. How about the lesbian judge in Texas, who is refusing to marry straight couples? Is there a law that says she has to marry straight people or is the law only for gay couples? Has she been put in jail? NOPE.Davis has the 1st amendment right to fallow her religious beliefs. The government has made accommodations for all other religion, like the Jehovah's Witness postal worker who refused to wear the U.S. flag on his uniform. Muslim women who wanted to wear a burka in their government jobs. The lesbian judge who refuses to marry straight couples. Davis has never said that her office will not issue marriage license. She has said that she will not be a part of gay marriage. She has asked Gov. Christy to take her name off of the license all together, but he said he cant change the writing on them. Why cant he change the writing? He has already changed the writing to include gay couples, why not change the name from Davis to the deputy clerk?TYT said that Davis or anyone else who has the 1st amendment right to step down if they cant do their jobs correctly. Wouldn't that mean that they should shut down TYT shows all together? TYT has a 1st amendment right to be part of the media but don't broadcast a news stories correctly. TYT are very partisan to the progressive party and don't do their jobs correctly. TYT should lead by example and shut down until they can tell the truth in all of their stories.

The whole "it's against my values" argument doesn't work if you applied for a job that involves something that is against your values. Like I'm vegetarian but have worked in a restaurant before and the job involved helping prepare meat (Chopping, marinating etc.) and serving it to customers, I don't think I'd have gotten very far saying that I won't do it because I'm vegetarian. I don't see why Religion should be an exception either, especially if it violates the law.

Their religious convictions apply to THEM as an Individual. They FORCE it on other people. The Muslim women isn't allowed to imbibe alcohol herself but she can give it to other to imbibe. The Christian women isn't allowed to marry another women but she can give two women or men a certificate that says those two are married. Again, the problem is Fundamentalists forcing their region on others.

A flight attendants job is not to serve lushes alcohol. In America it is against the law to force a person to commit what they believe to be a sin. There's more than one flight attendant on a flight. Alcohol consumption is restricted to 2 drinks on a plane anyway, it's not a free for all happy hour. Also Kim Davis did not break any law. The Supreme Court is not allowed to pass laws. Laws are written by elected officials. Kim Davis actually is an elected official unlike the court justice's btw. Legislation must be voted on to become Law. Religious freedom is the cornerstone of America and the freedom that allows all other freedoms. Freedom is not granted by man but by God. If man can give freedom then man can take it away. Therefore religious freedom is the freedom upon which all freedoms derive. When religious freedom is taken away then all other freedoms follow. Read a book or maybe the constitution, at least once, please.

So as long as it's legal I'll do it without bemoaning how a dead guy wants me to not do it. I don't want christmas off, nor Sunday's. Better yet I won't get pissy if you hire a LGBT person, or a religious person, unless they start sermonizing me. And I don't smoke. "

John, put your fedora down for a minute. Let's be honest, if you are a devout Muslim and a certain thing is considered "haram" (forbidden) like alcohol for example, you should know that it's bad for you using science, logic, and other forms of secular thinking. You don't have to be anti-religion like John makes it out to be to use common sense on why alcohol isn't good for you. However with all of that said, it's your job and you should do it.

    1) First of all, the Muslim woman was a new revert when she was hired as flight attendant and didn't know that she couldn't sell or serve wine, she thought you just couldn't drink it. And as she explained when she was on 'The View, after she found out, she spoke to her bosses or whoever was in charge, explained her situation, and they agreed and said just talk to other flight attendants so they can serve the wine and you serve other things. I'm not saying we should bend over and make special accommodation for people because of their religion, but the way the news channels are making it seem like this lady went Sharia Law on the airplane and declared the airplane wine free zone or something.
    2) I believe Hackabee is full sh** when he claims he saw terrorized detained in Gitmo were given prayer mats and told the direction to Mecca. They are literally treated like animals and cruelly punished by being forced fed, and other things I cannot even bring myself to write. And I don't care if the guilty who want to kill people are treated like sh** (they should be!!), but not everyone in Gitmo is guilty, there are some people the U.S. government detained for being guilty by association, who never had a trial, and were just thrown in Gitmo.
    3) I saw a video of Mr. Hackabee over here saying that there's no such thing as Palestine, and that Palestinians should go to Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, etc. and leave Israel for the Israelis. Oh, and the video was record without his knowledge and at the end he tells the guys he's talking to that he can't say things like this in public, so this should be kept between them.

It's the same as with the clerk who won't perform gay marriages because it's "against her beliefs". If you're not going to do your job then you have three options: quit, get fired or suck it up and do it anyway.
It's not a religious thing so much as a personal one, but I don't like drinking and smoking; I'd lend my friends money to buy groceries and other things without a second of hesitation but for alcohol... sorry, not comfortable with that... But I'm not going to apply for a job as a bartender! And if I was forced to become one I'd follow my own words and either quit or suck it up until I can find a better option!

Huckabee says that accommodations weren't made for Davis... The federal judge told her no action would be taken against her as long as she didn't interfere to stop the deputies issuing the licences (she wouldn't even have to touch the licences). I think being allowed not to do a major component of the job you're being paid $80k/yr to do is pretty fair.

Great points by John and Ana. Some may argue that this liberal view of "not breaking the law" in cases like this is inconsistent with our views on civil disobedience. It really does come down to context. Hypothetically, if we had a Liberal Kim Davis who was granting marriage certificates for same sex couples years before this supreme court decision was made, I'd be justified in viewing her as a moral activist. Even though the certificates would ultimately be rejected by another branch, such an act of defiance/activism would garner media attention, especially when such an individual goes to jail because of their actions. The troubling part for me is that as an atheist, if this were me, I would have less legal protection for a rational, fair, humane defense of my call for equality through my civil disobedience. This is completely unfair for non-believers as even though we have a much better case in defense of our actions, we start from way behind those who have their "religious freedoms" to protect them. As Cenk put it in a previous video, the main difference here is that the real Kim Davis was breaking the law in order to deny someone their rights, whereas this hypothetical Liberal Kim Davis would be breaking the law in order to grant an oppressed minority their equal rights as human beings and citizens. In one case we have a hero, in reality we a religious zealot.

The first religion was Hinduism about 5000 years ago BEC.
it was all about freedom and believe in your self first with out book's or church's and no God or devil because they believe we are all made up from the same energy along with animals and the earth it self and even after death we come back together again as one energy, who people call God today.
The India where the first people to travel the world in peace and talk about religion to help others understand life and the world around them.
All other religious came after Hinduism about 2000 years ago BEC.
Because people started to see the power in religion and how much control it gave them over other's and use it toget others to follow there own religion.
Even kings and Queens saw the power of religion and use it toget there own people to fight for them in wars even on there own people if they did not follow or believe in them.
    just like today 2015.
There are 2 religious who have been doing this more then any other religious today.
And they always been at war with one another. There called Christians who started there religion 2000 years ago BEC and Muslims who started there religion 1,300 years ago because of Christians try to take over the world.
Christianity kill off the native Indians use there religion along with other country's behind them.
And the Muslims are doing the same today because of what Christians had to much control of the world about 90% one time, till other country's push them out.
Christianity made Muslims who they are today and the same people made ISIS who they are today. But it not about religion today,
it all about oil power and money.
just look back and you will see the truth for your self.

I'm not a Muslim myself, but I don't think either Huckabee, or the anchor understood what the flight attendant's issue was all about. It's not that she was uncomfortable with serving alcohol to passangers because her religion is against alcohol consumption. She was perfectly fine with other people consuming it.
It's that her religion is against producing, distributing, serving and consumption of alcohol. According to Islam, it would be a sin for her to serve alcohol.

The thing is, Davis was given accommodations. The judge offered to cease prosecution if she stopped preventing her subordinates from issuing marriage licenses, and she was eventually freed when the judge was satisfied that this would be the case. Similarly, the flight attendant had reached an agreement with her co-workers, and was suspended on the complaint of the world's most obvious bigot.
