- Thanks to Chameleon for sending this antenna several months ago. I just now got around to making this video. I Have used it several times since I have had it and the results were nothing more than satisfactory. You will see me using this antenna very often in the future videos on "The Ponderosa".
By the way, check out my new RUclips channel of "The Ponderosa" the new videos are on the way.

Just a note. Love the sounds of the bugs and birds over the road noise in the background.
BTW, thanks for the demo. Was actually looking at one to go with the IC-705 I have coming.
Thanks Eric for your contribution to promote our hobby. Its apparent that you learned quite a bit about amateur Radio, Amateur Electronics and Making Videos. I am sure many of your supporters will continue to view your new Website. Good luck! 73
I am always learning and I NEVER EVER wanted to be or claimed to be an expert.. I want to have things to learn about and although I know a lot and experienced a lot when I feel I know too much I will purposely try to stump myself HAHA
Your videos are a great help to people new to ham radio Eric. Thanks.
Awesome video Eric, great audio! Thanks for taking the time, but take time for yourself and family. Take care
If you live in a space that's hard to set up a base station antenna. The perfect solution right there. Thanks for the video!
Thats the antenna I've been looking for ! Small, versatile, efficient, I'm sold! 😉👍
Excellent video the best demo I have seen on the chameleon f-loop antenna superb.
Alan in the UK.
Nice work again Eric. A great explanation and video. Thanks.
Hi Eric,
Fine demonstration of setup, tuning, and tear down. Looking forward to video of operating from the porch. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
You got me interested in mag loops and now I am itching to make a mag loop to mount on the roof of my van.
Hello Eric,
Thanks for the great informative video :-)
After watching this video i might go for the Chameleon F-loop 2.0.
Greetings and 73's from PD0ONE
Still waiting for the jet ski on the pond! 73, Eric.
Thanks Eric. Pleasantly surprised to see a ham vid so soon from you. My experience with a friend’s new Chameleon loop... I wasn’t impressed. He had to send it back because of the internal reduction drive was slipping, I believe twice. He had me take the cover off in order to see the malfunction. I wasn’t going to attempt repair of something that was under warranty. Once finally fixed...Experimenting with moving the coax away at a 90° angle as another poster said definitely helped with signal and most likely tx. I like my Alex loop. Packs smaller and less weight. Easier to set up. Only goes down to 40 but have made many contacts there, a few to Europe even during the low sunspot cycle, and on 10 watts. Also, I flattened out the small loop at the top somewhat for more area to follow the large loop’s curve, similar to Kevin Loughin’s test and observation. Hope to see ya soon and maybe hear you on the air. 73
Love those coax cables. I am pretty new to ham, and have purchased all lmr-400 ultraflex from them. Nice cables
Hi Eric, thanks for the great videos. I've just ordered the Chameleon F Loop 2.0 to pair up with my IC-705. Keep those videos coming. 73s Jon G0IUE
Look forward to seeing some QSOs on that loop. 👍
I trek up a mountain with my treestand to go hunting, so I would have no trouble carrying that solid ring. Great review.
"You ain't taking this up the mountain" - Hold my beer!
Excellent...was upset you were gonna stop doing these ham related vids...de AC3LZ
Gotta catch you on the bands, from Delaware, I seem to have a pipeline to FL
Nice to see you (back?).. and a video on a magloop.
It's called "Thinning the herd", LOL, I mean, sure I am taking a break but the 1,800 subscribers that unsubscribed are obviously mad at me??? In that case it's ok they can leave I don't want big numbers I want friends and family that stick with me.. Those 1,800 people are expecting way tooo much for me LOL
Thank you Eric for you content. Ty for breaking it down into info for the avg person 😉 keep it coming. KC3ONO
I have this antenna, and I have just started testing its reception capability. Just the other evening, I was able to use it to pick up a signal all the way from 🇧🇬.

Nice
Could we get the make/model of the tripod? Thanks for the great video.
On the ponderosa!
Good video, looking forward to future video making some contacts.

How about assembling one double length coax for the loop - and use a double loop without the extra 2 PL-259 and barrel connector
Whats the receive like compared to an 80-10 efhw at 40ft??? Just wondered if these are better as could use it just for receive.......many thanks n great to see you back:) M7xtt
Thanks for the video Eric.
What’s the length of the coax for big loop.
The coupler is a 6.5” loop?
To get the BEST SWR - make sure to keep the RG-58 coax BEHIND the unit and avoid the RG-58 to touch the LMR-radiator!
Good to know, thanks for the comment. I didn't see an issue with the way i had it but I can only imagine it might be better as you suggested.
would rg-213 be better ? less loss ?
@@christophersmith1155 RG-213 is too expansive and not really worth it. The feed line is only 12' long.
Hi Eric, I have just bought my 1st HF the classic Icom IC-718 I do not have a tuner yet. Just wanting to get some tips. What would be the best multiband base antenna to use without an automatic tuner? This looks great but I think I would want mine outside permanently as UK is always cold lol. Many thanks.
Can you show it with the power compensator mounted.
I have the 2.0 Total.. I use an MFJ antenna analyzer to pre-tune than hook to a larger radio
I'm in an apartment Antenna and radio different rooms.
Works well you can go to 40 meters on the single loop.. or on the 3rd piece of coax (you might notice it's longer)
The classical design of the mag loop antenna suggests the feeding loop goes to the bottom and the tuning capacitor to the top and is equiped with the lengthened tuning rod of some kind or, best of all, with the remote-controled slow-step small electrical motor, and there is a certain logic behind this. But I wonder what kind and type of tuning capacitor the customer gets paying the price they ask? 73! Linas LY2H
Can you give data on how the metal ring works as opposed to the original? would be nice...
Is the tripod you used to mount the antenna onto about 24"? Going to get one for mine.
When you say that when you transmit on FM "people will yell at you". It looks like you are in a secluded area. Just wondering about using FM
Hi, when you use the aluminium loop, does the inner circle touch the radiotor or do you use the scrap to avoid the contact ? I tried the second option but dont hear nor see the right position of the capacitor. Beside the manual is poorly made, btw I didnt see that I should use the 8" inner circle with the double loop. If I could get detailed explanations..
Thx for your help, Milos F4IIP
So I just got my first HF and its the Xiegu X5150 and also a qrp loop antenna but having difficulties tuning. Ar you holding down the PTT the entire time while the swr spikes then settles? My loop has 2 control knobs one for freq and the other impedance. Thank you.
So tell me again how the dial and meter works? It seems there is only a scale but no indicator on where you are on the scale. In other words, as you dial around how do you know where you are?
Confusing about the side vs edge positioning for direction of signal maximum.
Mag loops are being dusted off in preparation for the IC 705 out soon, me thinks. Would be great to see a shootout with the MPAS. I have them both. Thanks for the refresher. PS. I think the LMR should have a quarter inch gap between them using the Velcro to hold it in place.
you probably dont give a shit but does anybody know of a way to log back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Cassius Noel Instablaster =)
@Harry Antonio thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Harry Antonio it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account!
@Cassius Noel No problem xD
I so badly want to see the zap clip! Lol
I just put up mine and I see I did something wrong I used both coax cables so I need to remove
When you add the hard loop the efficiency should go up. If it does the bandwidth must go down. It should be sharper to be more efficient. With these small transmitting loops the bandwidth and efficiency are inversely related. Wider bandwidth means less efficiency. Making the loop larger (or adding turns) will increase bandwidth. But lowering loss resistance raises Q and narrows the bandwidth. Fun antennas! de Alan, w6akb
That’s exactly the way I tell how efficient my Loop designs are. The longer the circumference the wider the bandwidth
I’ve also noticed that minimum SWR doesn’t not correspond with resonance. Figured there could be some adjustments to be made with the feedpoint impedance and the antenna at resonance.
I’m currently waiting for my nanoVNA to turn up so I can really see what’s going on with them.
Where did you get the tripod?
Whats the tripod your using?
Thank you for the video. Looking forward to you making contacts. 73 Clark KG7LOI
Can you use this on 11 meter as well as the ham bands.
Sure
What tripod do you recommend for this? Thanks
I like to use a Sony camera tripod. As long as the feet are wide enough to support in low winds, and it’s has a 1/4 20 screw, which all camera tripods do
Do I need a tripod for this antenna for my balcony?
No - you can install it on a table top. If you've a rail you can use the CHA UCM.
In your experience with this antenna, which frequencies do you get the best reception with?
30m/20m/17m/15/12m and 10m, and thats probably because 40 and 80m are almost impossible with 5 watts no matter which antenna you have because everyone on those 2 bands are running amplifiers. It will receive quite well on 40 meters but i have never made a contact on 40 or 80m with it so far.
Is this a sponsored video?
Two huge problems with this antenna for me. First is the low power rating. Second is that you need be at the base of the antenna to tune it. People dog MFJ, but they came up with a magnetic loop that handles 100 watts and you can tune it from the shack.
I understand your concern. I feel its two different animals because one is meant for portable (mostly) and one is made for fixed operation. I am confident Chameleon could come up with a better design than the MFJ for fixed operation but again that MFJ is no way capable of backpack portable, so not a fair comparison..
Chameleon offers a screw on Thing they call a Power Compensator that will boost the output to 60 watts.
@@HamRadioConcepts I'd like to see an antenna up to the same specs as the MFJ because I think Chameleon puts out a great quality product, but the antenna I used tonight on my apartment balcony is MFJ. I'm not interested in going outside every time I change frequency and I'd like to use 30 watts full duty cycle digital, because anything less and I don't get heard.
"This item is currently out of stock. We are not accepting backorders at this time. "
Bummer.
Back in stock!!
Your bird? Lol....I doubt the bird would be affected
What the hell is with everything FT8? Don’t hams talk any longer?
Dude haven’t you heard LOL, “the bands are dead” and they think that’s the ONLY WAY it will happen. It’s sad
@@HamRadioConcepts the band are dead because hams make them dead. If all you’re gonna do is sit around and tune all day of course the bands are gonna be dead. There’s absolutely no challenge what so ever to FT8. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. I myself would rather have qualitative than have quantitative amounts of contacts. I know voice QSOs are going to be tough doing QRP, but at least it’s gonna be a challenge. I want to get to know the station on the other end not just exchange grid squares, signal reports, and 73. What fun is there in that?
