I think all the big tech CEO's that were at least somewhat in touch with their industry knew that the cloud was going to take over data driven computing. They had access to information on it way before the public, and just looking at the specs makes it pretty obvious that the power and economy of server farms utilizing parallelism is a much better way of doing things than large on-site servers that are expensive and require frequent maintenance.

I think the cloud is inevitable. However, I don't think people in general will ever give up local storage. The cloud is good for backing things up. Its also good accessing your documents anywhere anytime. At the end of the day, I want total control of my data and I don't want to pay some huge software company to access it.

If we look at the market right now. Everyone is trying to sell you a cloud solution. Google Drive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox and especially Adobe who tries to to build an entire business solution. Software, cloud based software services, business catalyst, hosting and marketing services if you compare it with Google analytics+adwords+newsletter services.
So, if we consider the fact that most people are still effected with "software" based on a hard drive, downloading and installing updates and still hoping that all works as before (with several desktop and mobile devices in one network), which ist in most cases not the case ... cloud computing and sync services ... it usually takes some time after every update to make it work again.
I think SJ had this idea already in mind a long long time ago ... the out of the box solution ... looks something like a keyboard and a "glass plate" monitor and an Apple TimeCapsule similar network computer combined with a WLAN router, I would build-in an SSD-Drive ... just in case as a fallback.
Network computers also mean, it has to work, always, 150% software and hardware reliable, no security issues, working smoothly with other network devices. (Apple has still this Airport issue and 1 hop with two Airport devices.)

I admire his achievements but you can't just say all the end user needs is a browser. What about people who use computers to write software or those that use them to design products e.g. AutoCad or 3d modelling software, yeah sure store it on the cloud but can you really rely on that through through a VPN to your companies network and servers. Not everyone uses the internet for social media and shopping exclusively. Desktop computing is still a requirement in many walks of life.

Interesting interview....but i do feel that the more that data is hosted in the "cloud" and remote servers beyond customers control, that we have become just mere cogs in someone else's corporate vision. Similar to how Facebook owns all the data your type or upload into it.....all these data centers will perhaps "own" much of the info that we feel is uniquely ours.
When there were more hard drives and conventional data backups that were locked in safes, there was at least the pervasive feeling that we still owned whatever we were entering in onto our computers. Do you agree?
