    One thing I've always loved about Richard's approach to this stuff isn't just telling you what's wrong and what to do about it, but getting into the mechanics of how all this stuff works. I wanna know WHY it isn't working and what I can do to fix it and he delivers on that pretty much all the time.

    Most new dishwashers have a completely different design. Too bad they did not show how much the design has improved for access. I had to replace two parts on my dishwasher just a few months apart. The intake valve including the actuator and the output drain valve where the water is pumped out of the bottom. I've noticed from years of use many of the seals and gaskets will simply dry out. Also, moving parts will simply fail over time. Many people just go and spend alot of money on a dishwasher but I grew up in a house where we fixed everything ourselves.

    • @nsbioy
      @nsbioy 2 года назад +3

      Many other parts wear out. My Bosch DW is 6 years old. The front display failed. I will not replace that because not worth it. The start button physically broke. To replace the simple button, I opened up the front door compartment. The control buttons are held by plastic. The plastic started crumbling as soon as I touched it. I had to rig a piece of Styrofoam to hold them together. Then the inlet valve failed so I replaced that, too. If anything else fails in this dishwasher, it will go straight to the junkyard. It is just not worth fixing anymore if something breaks. 😕

    • @Sam-ey1nn
      @Sam-ey1nn 2 года назад +3

      The problem is that the computer / display is often the thing that fails, and replacing that is several hundred dollars. At which point its just worth it to get a new dishwasher as you might spend that couple hundred and end up not even fixing the problem.
      Appliances in general nowadays are all built out of the crappiest components imaginable and designed to fail after several years so you're forced to buy new ones. Doesn't matter whether you buy the cheap models or expensive models, the same is true of all of them.
      What's really interesting is that "forced obsolesce" isn't even a new business concept. In the early 1900s, when lightbulbs were relatively new, manufacturers kept improving them and made versions that could last for years and years. But then they found their sales decreasing. So they all conspired together to start making them as cheaply as possible so they'd wear out much more quickly and force people to replace them. That became the standard until CFLs and LEDs finally came around.
      I'm generally not a fan of government regulation but I really don't see what else could fix this issue. The free market on its own can't, because a competitor that makes long-lasting products would have to both charge more and then wait years for their claims to be proven out, and even then its no guarantee of sales as people often buy the cheapest option regardless. Perhaps manufacturers should be required to post expected lifespans on all appliances? Make it easier for consumers to compare upfront the quality of the product they're buying?

    • @scottrtomlinson
      @scottrtomlinson 2 года назад +1

      If you managed to get an appliance to last more than 7-10 years, many parts will no longer be available. The amount of different models/corresponding parts for these things is astonishing.

    My Miele dishwasher is designed very differently, with a triple filter that's designed to be easily removed and cleaned. It doesn't have a grinder. Every dishwasher I owned with a grinder eventually started redepositing food onto the dishes, because the grinder blades had worn down. Same for the non return valve. You can easily remove it and clean it from the inside of the machine. The bottom washer arm also just pulls right out for cleaning. I don't understand your "grinder" issues. At the end of the wash cycle the water is pumped out past the spinning wire (common design) you're calling "blades". Then the rinse cycles start. "Redepositing" food should have nothing to do with the built-in "disposal"...usually just a spinning wire in the pump discharge path. Sounds like your wash water isn't being fully pumped out, isn't hot enough, bad detergent, weak pump, clogged wash arms, etc.

    A lot of new dishwashers have now removed the heating coil at the bottom (energy efficiency laws) and the food grinder/disposer (noise).
    Only American brand dishwashers (GE, Whirlpool) still have the heating coil and you can get better drying performance as compared with an import brand (Bosch, LG) as they dont have heated dry.

I had one about three or four years ago and my bill shot up. Folks told me it was the portable heater but it was hard to believe that did it. There has to be options out there that won’t double or triple your monthly bill.

      @ yup, I understand that my dude. Last i checked portable heaters used up quite a bit of wattage, the good ones. My bill shot up after i started using a brand new one. Here’s the thing that can take this either way, i lived in Lubbock TX where there’s word the only electrical company there sticks it to their customers every year and i did get two bills in my three years living there where the bill inexplicably tripled. I was baffled when around February it shot up for one month, but then on December of the previous month when we had the Christmas lights on we only paid a fraction of February’s amount. Many folks i worked with brushed it off as “it happens” when i told them my situation, saying lubbock power does it to everyone at least once a year and politicians know but turn a blind eye. At that time i was also told these appliances use up a lot of electricity and it’s best to just have your central unit on auto. Folks at the store where I bought the heater, co-workers, my apartment’s handyman and manager, and the folks at lubbock power all said the same thing. If this is in fact true then i go back to my original post’s question, there’s got to be new portable heaters that are easier on your wallet by now.

Unfortunately, most people are too lazy to do even the most simplest tasks when it comes to stuff like this. They'd rather be lazy and not take care of anything. They're okay with buying a new model when their current model dies. My mom taught me much better than that. She always told me to take care of everything I own so it will last much longer. Those words live inside my head every single day.

    Ok. I am now an expert at dishwasher, install/maintenance/ disposal. In the 18 years I have lived in my house I have had 8 dishwashers. The one that came with the house and died 6 months in. New whirlpool #2 lasted 3 mo before arm fell off. Replaced arm with service lasted 3 months...rinse/repeat...service 3 mo rinse/repeat... 4 times then they replaced whole thing. #3 did the same they replaced it. #4 worked for 1 yr and1 month. Motherboard blew. All whirlpools till now. Switched to Bosch #5 worked for almost 2yrs then died motherboard not covered under extended warranty that we paid for. #6 Samsung worked good for a few yrs under extended warranty and arm fell. Called for service... replaced arm. Then motor went, service replaced then died and they had no idea why so no replacement. Perhaps wiring they said and not covered. #7 samsung panel died under extended warranty so they cut a check and said we will not ever get another check or replacement via Samsung.
    At this point whirlpool out, Bosch out, Samsung out, so we go with GE because our 15 yr old sink attached portable dishwasher in my bathroom still functional and our backup leads us to GE. This one lasts 5 yrs before I replace the temp sensor. Then the motor. Then the drainage hose. Then the water valve (attach point to h2o hose) which the filter was dirty and stuck. Then the heating element went but I don't use it so never mind. 7.5 yrs it lasted I gave up.
    So bought the cheapest ge out there and it's internals are exactly like portable, confirmed with online research. So my hope is it lasts 5 yrs min.
    Took apart old GE keeping all parts because they fit this one, all parts match. The plastic tub is now an outdoor cat house for abandoned cats in winter.
    Long story I hate dishwasher makers who do not produce nor follow thru with their warranties.
    Yes I'm good at maintenance and repair. Faulty products regardless of makers reputation.

    I know they tell you not to wash dishes before loading a washer, but I either wash by hand and use the machine to dry, or I soak the dishes in hot water to remove caked-on and larger pieces of food before placing them in for a wash cycle. I just much rather not deal with dismantling that machine for anything. Since I live alone, however, I tend to wash items by hand as I use them.

And at over 100 bucks a pop to replace every few years, its too much money to have to spend on replacing the racks. • @niroms8199
      @niroms8199 2 года назад +1

      It was explained to me that when we rinse the dishes to clean before putting them in the DW the soap has very little dirt to work with, therefore the coating on the racks receives the harshness of the power of the soap and the coating breaks down sooner.

    • @michaelfisher7835
      @michaelfisher7835 2 года назад

      @@niroms8199 Interesting, but not what is causing my problem. Evidently the dryer element gets the dishes so hot, that over time, they begin to melt the plastic coating. I have already replaced both racks at over $100 a piece, once, and didnt want to do it again. So I read where Flex Seal could with stand the high temperature of the heating element and decided to just spray the bad spots and see if it holds. So far it has, but its only been a few months so only time will tell if it was a good idea.

      As Richard states in the video, DW doors are not well sealed. The problem you describe might be a combination: the way you load it and/or the seal giving out. I can get our very primo Miele to leak if I run it MT, for example.

    • @wholeNwon

      At the 2 lower corners of the door seal you will see 2 rubber blocks. They may be very dirty or cracked. They are easily replaced. Yes, how you load it can affect how the water is deflected inside. Also be sure you are not using too much DW detergent or that there is some residual SOAP on the dishes before loading. There must be no or only very little foaming during the wash cycles.

      @@oambrosia As much as I love Torx I have to defend Phillips.
      There's a big misconception about phillips. Most people are using a #2 phillips when they are supposed to be using a #1 Phillips, #3 Phillips or even a Posidriv. The same stripping would occur if you used one size off from the correct Torx bit size required. Try it for yourself with different sized bits. I've stripped many Torx screws in my early years of tool usage. Even when using the correct size of Torx I have stripped a few titanium screws that were expensive to replace. I believe the reason for that is because it is more expensive to machine a 6 point star accurately than it is a 4 point cross to exact dimensions.

Well, the dishwaasher deep cleans and sanitizes. The tpical homeowner is NOT going to have the washer up on a table or bench where that kind of service is easy.
