@@ThePressingMatters I have the Classic, MOFI, and the new Atlantic 75 and whatever came out originally. I was too young to fully appreciate what I was hearing then. Absolutely. You just drop the needle on this record (The Lark) and you are emotionally carried away. But thanks to Scott, for I would never have discovered this record and so many others if not for him and his brilliant reviews. He is seriously underrated. I would love to see a discussion between Scott and Chad Kassam.
Great review Scott I’m on the fence with this one as I really love the Mofi 45…. I’ll have to listen a couple more times to help decide what to do here. Cheers
Thanks. You might be all set if you really love the MOFI. I have always liked it too. I hope if this recording means a lot to you that you get to hear the Atlantic 45 somehow. Maybe I'll see if I can get some files of the two versions up. That would be cool!
Knowing that I don’t need another copy of an album has never stopped me and probably never will 😄. I’ve just bought yet another copy of Santana’s Caravanserai, this time on Speakers Corner. Nice to see some popular music featured again, there’s always a good mix of popular/rock/ classical on your channel, Scott.
Hi Scott got mine yesterday along with Atlantic 75, The yes Album. They both sound great. The MFSL 2 x 45 is still available at Music Direct but now its $125. Kevin Gray did an amazing job with The Yes Album.
I too just got my copy of The Yes Album. Kevin did a great job on it. I was thrilled. It surpassed all the other copies I had by a bid margin. Such a pleasure to hear.
I love your work Scott and always look forward to every episode. I have been listening to an original pressing of this album for many years, it has always been a stand out recording in original for and OGs use to sell for good $$. I am a bit concerned with how these reviews are going towards being system dependent which throws me off. I have strived to get my system in a place of sound good but not so analytical to require only audiophile pressings to be enjoyable. Anyway, love you channel.
Hi Mark. The system changes are an interesting thing in how I perceive these records. If anything I am moving away from an analytical system because I don't enjoy that. All tubes, a very natural sounding speaker. It sounds like we're on a similar path. Upgrading but avoiding a clinical, soulless presentation. You probably know by now by sonic priorities - natural sound with a touch of warmth. I can't stand bright etched overly detailed sound . I feel I'm in the best position I've ever been in to comment on sound differences. I'm certain if you had these two side by side, you'd appreciate the MOFI, but love the AP.
Just to expand a bit on system voicing, I knew I was headed in the wrong direction a couple of years ago. I had a good sound in general, but I was never feeling like exploring my collection and was limiting my choices to audiophile stuff that was going to sound great on it. I was avoiding playing a lot of my collection because the system was not allowing me to enjoy those other records as much. So I went through and got some advice from someone I trusted, and brought more tubes into the system, addressed the cartridge and speakers, and my collection was back in rotation. I had the excitement to hear the next record after record, and it was a relief. Now my system doesn't make a poor recording sound magically good, but each one is shown in its best light. The system is more musical now, rather than hifi verging on analytical.
@@ThePressingMatters got a hand full of the releases and I have been nothing but blown away by them. They are pricy here in Sweden due to all being US imports so about 90-100 dollar for one but it’s worth it imo. End game on the once I got.
Great vid, as always, Scott! I've got weird luck. I live in an area with lots of good record stores and the surest way to guarantee that I find an affordable OG pressing is to announce a gourmet reissue. Alan Parsons, CSN, Bad Co., and then just last week.... This one! Every time MoFi or AP announce a title, an OG shows up in a local shop. It's such a great album. The 2 Atlantic 75 titles I've gotten so far include CS&N. I hadn't planned on getting this one. I may have to reconsider.
Thanks! That is good luck! Especially if they are inexpensive. I always like to have a good example of the original and the best reissue. I'm pretty confident this is the best reissue and I have heard all except the Classic 45. Really well done.
Great video as always. I have the Classic 4 x 45 rpm LP set. I assumed that this was the same plates so I didn’t bother. I may have to check this new one out.
Thanks for your comment! I'm very curious how the Classic 45 and the AP 45 compare and so far you are the only one who has it! If you do get the new one please come let us know the differences you heard.
Thank you Scott for another thoughtful review. I am just curious if you have any sibilance on your MoFi or Atlantic 75th on "Traction in the Rain". I have three original Broadway Atlantic's and all have a sibilance on David's vocals.
Hi Bill, Thanks for your question. I will play it again and take a listen for that. I hadn't noticed anything obvious during this listening session but I may have missed it. Will report back.
Hi Scott, very nice review, sorry this is a bit late. I have the 2003 Classic by BG, the MFSL 45RPM and the 4x45 RPM set from 2005 by BG. I fully agree with your assessment of the MFSL and also agree with your observations about systems. Spot on. Hi! Thanks for watching! I didn't mean to shortchanged thr original Classic Records 45 - I simply didn't hear it. I'm not sure why they didn't use the plates again but I doubt it was any issue with that mastering. Most likely an issue with a lost or damaged plate.
Both are nice records but in close comparison, the Atlantic was a better listen for me. I think Bernie did a wonderful job bringing out the best of this recording in the most natural, musical way. I'm certain you will love it.
Love your review Scott I have the Mofi which I like a lot I had the Classic records 33 I wasn’t happy with the sound I sold the Classic 33 I’m definitely going to grab the AP 45 Im definitely going to take your word. Bernie mastering choices are great I’m glad he recut it .
I'm sure you'll hear exactly what I'm talking about. The Classic 33 was not as good as I had hoped. The 45 from that period is probably better but now we have this and it's fantastic. You'll love this version. Let me know if you get it and what you thought!
This is the one to get , I think you might be disappointed with the Classic 45 from 20 years ago . Love your reviews and this is on order now and I also can't wait for the Yes and the rest of the Genesis . 👍😁
Hi Tony, Though I've never heard the Classic 45, I do own the 33 and it's ok. This is on a whole new level. Can't wait to hear what you think about it! I have a Yes preview coming up and you know I'll cover every Genesis album in detail.
Hmmm…🤔 I have the Mobile Fidelity 45 and hoped I was already sorted but maybe not… I just received Gaucho the other week…this Bernie Grundman chap is driving me to penury 😆 Nice review Scott, thank you!
I think Bernie deserves every accolade he's garnered over the years. His work today is better than ever. His Gaucho was fantastic. This too is a beauty. l will try and get files up for this one soon, if you think you can wait. I know it's crazy what we do in this hobby, and getting another expensive copy - well there better be a reason that is musically and sonically important. The MOFI is a good record, but I think this one is quite a bit better. The MOFI grabs you with its impressive dynamic range and extended detail and bass. It's quite impressive and was my favorite since it arrived. I think 45 is a must for this album. Bernie's gives us the advantages of the format with a more refined, natural, organic and overall musical presentation. I hope you can hear it back to back somehow. My friend Oz is expecting his copy and I'll ask him to do an A/B video or files.
Hi Scott, Good review. I compared DR values from mofi to A75. The mofi is a bit more dynamic. I like them both. The mofi is certainly more detailed. Mofi seems so hifi! Is it possible we are just hearing the difference between Bernie and Krieg's speakers? It is interesting that you notice a difference with your speaker changes. I know Bernie prides himself on his speakers. They both will stay with me. The mofi seems so hifi. Bernie’s seems dare is say “grainy”. It like 4k vs DVD. What do I want to watch? Well, I am a details guy so I appreciate the uber clarity.
I would certainly agree, the MOFI is a bit more dynamic and detailed. It is a good record, one of their best. It's just now hearing this new one, I can see how it's enhanced a bit for a more hi fi presentation. I think some might prefer it, though in my system right now I preferred the more slightly laid back, organic sound that Bernie got out of this. I'll be keeping both! I didn't sense the graininess, but perhaps the sharp clarity of the MOFI could make Bernie's cut seem more diffuse. I just think it works for this recording. I was very surprised Bernie got Music Is Love to be more listenable. It's always stuck out as a mix of lo fi and hi fi. I thought is sounded better than ever on the AP.
@@ThePressingMatters right on! It is wild how all these little things we notice. I guess this is why we love records etc. thanks for the great content!
Scott, I wouldn't make the assumption about the Classic 45 if you've only heard the 33. With regard to the Classic 33 and 45 of Kind Of Blue, for instance, they were cut years apart and sound somewhat different, some of it having to do with it being cut at 45. I'm sure. That being said, good comment about knowing the system (including the room and room treatment) of the reviewer. Of course, there are other factors such as their ears and their knowledge of natural tonality.
Scott, I have a 1st press Italian pressing, believe it or not. It had been recommended to me years ago, as, I was told, they tube mastered their records. I have no other copy with which to compare, and haven't heard it years. But with this latest release. I want to pull it out (the LP, that is) and listen to it. 🙂
I just picked up the Atlantic 75th but haven’t been able to listen to it. I also have the Mofi and, while it sounded good, the vinyl was too noisy for my taste, especially for an album at that cost point. I’m hoping the 75th bests it in that regard. Thanks for your review.
I was able to clean both ultrasonically, so the MOFI was pretty nice in that regard. But the AP is nearly its match and is say it's quieter than many UHQRS on Clarity Vinyl. Please let me know what you think once you've really had a good back and forth with the two. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Good video. And good commentary on the importance of playback equipment. Listening, enjoying, observing, even filming/writing is fine, but using a $50 cart and inexpensive speakers to audition no matter how good your ears or insight, you’ll miss lots.
Thanks Anthony. I feel with all the upgrades I am on a solid footing to at least describe what I hear with some credibility. Revealing the equipment is something I think is extremely important.
Hey Scott, How does this pressing handle the distortion in the vocals on the first two tracks? When I bought the MOFI, I think the consensus was that it was baked into the tapes. But if this has less high end attenuation, hopefully there is less distortion.
It's always going to be there to some extent on Music is Love. For the second track, I'm not sure I know what you hear - I'll have to doublecheck for any distortion on Cowboy Movie. I don't recall any of much significance. I felt this pressing handled it better than any other I've heard, but Music is Love will always sound that way.
@@ThePressingMattersthanks for thoughts. I listened to it yesterday and heard some distortion on Cowboy Movie’s vocals, but I think my stylus is nearing the end of its life and will be replacing it ASAP. So that could be the culprit
@@syr1964 it very well could be. That's exactly the kind of thing you notice first. I'll check it out and reply when I have a free moment to revisit it.
@@ThePressingMattersI changed my stylus and went back to listen. There’s no distortion on Crosby’s vocals now-but I do feel there’s some haziness to the vocals but that may just be me hearing how hoarse he sounds on this track. What bothers me on this track (on the MOFI) are the electric guitars. They seem overly extended in the highs. I guess the emphasized highs didn’t bother me too much on the acoustic tracks, but they do on this one. Contemplating the AP more and more (it will be my third pressing of this album lol).
@syr1964 Good update, and I apologize I haven't had a moment to listen to the track. I've been getting a new turntable in. So I will give both a listen now that the dust has settled. MOFI is sometimes guilty of this kind of treble boost, but we'll see what I hear now on the VPI with the Hana.
Have a minty 1st press which sounds stunning. My pressing is flat silent and my system has no need for a sub woofer. Never liked MOFI's tinkering agree MOFI tends to be "hey look at me" on a high end system
Yes, I love not needing a sub and having the bass as part of the design is a big plus in the way it integrates. Feels seamless and bits great it's deep enough for my room. I really thought the MOFI would be the best but I've changed cart, phono, amp and speakers since hearing it last. Yup they tinker too much.
If this had come out before the last release of the mofi, I would have preferred this one. But I can't keep doubling and tripling up on these expensive records anymore, so I'm satisfied with my mofi...unless a good price came along 😂
The MOFI is a good record, one of their best of the last few years. No shame in stopping there. I'm sure there will be a few that prefer it. I'm going to sell my sealed MOFI but keep my copy. It makes a nice alternative to the more natural AP.
I'd really need to revisit it. When I shot out the 33s (Classic and Rhino) it was a long time ago in a different system. I can take a listen soon and let you know. However if you don't mind 45s, this record really benefits from it. I think at the time I might have preferred the Classic. Would you like me to listen to the Bellman and the Atlantic? That actually would be good to do.
@@ThePressingMatters - that’d be great, and I love 45 rpm’s. Since Bernie and Chris share a shop plus the edge 45 rpm gives it might be the 45 by a nose. Thanks !
I just listened to it tonight. Then played the Atlantic. There's no question in my mind - the Atlantic is superior. Much more open sounding, many stunning and beautiful moments. The Bellman is ok, but I never felt at any time it bettered the Atlantic. Much better overall musical involvement with the Atlantic. The music feels expansive, like it can finally breathe. I would seriously consider it over any other pressing. Hope that helps!
Yes, it is (noted in the review) which makes the comparison even more interesting. Same tape, different equipment and eq . Both excellent but different. I love a more natural sound so I do like the AP better. I'd never let go of the MOFI though. Different more detailed presentation that I don't mind hearing once in a while.
I finally got around to listening to this version and comparing it to the Mofi. Overall, both sound very good, but the Mofi seems a tad bloated on the bass and overall the vocals seem more recessed and less distinct than on the Atlantic 75th. That’s not to say that the Mofi is a bad sounding pressing; it isn’t. It’s just that to my ears and on my system, the Atlantic 75th sounds more balanced and natural. I continue, however, to find it frustrating how the 75th Anniversary edition jackets are smaller than traditional 12 inch vinyl jackets. It’s going to require a custom cut on my VSS dual pocket sleeves to create a tighter fit. I’m mystified by this.
Agreed, the MOFI is exactly as you describe, and it's not a bad job at all. I always liked it and still do. The bass seems like it is more in balance (for this recording) on the Atlantic. These are subtleties and I can understand some may prefer the MOFI. For sure the Atlantic is a more balanced presentation. If you can figure out how to custom cut the sleeves for smaller gatefolds, I'd love to know the technique. I wish they would create a slightly shorter version for doing gatefolds as we do.
Well, I'd say I'm sticking closely to my map of what I feel are essential jazz releases I know I will play more than a few times. There's such a flood of stuff I get a bit overwhelmed. I'm looking forward to some things coming up in the AS Verve Series. I also have a temporary low budget, due to a big system upgrade.
@@ThePressingMatters Nothing urgent really, I am keen on those new 7 LPs from Monk, coming in both the boxset and individually from Analogue Productions. Thanks!
@@drazenbabich Yes that definitely caught my eye. I'll look into it. In my opinion the 45 RPM Mobile Fi is not so good. I guess if this would be AAA. Unfortunately I wasted my money on this one since I prefer by large an original US pressing that I bought many years ago
Yes, I understand that the MOFI is just not going to please every listener. Originals are so good, so natural, that the MOFI seems a bit odd with the enhancements.
I might be interested in doing that. A downsize project is in the very near future. I will let you know here. Or shoot me an email at sw.thepressingmatters@gmail.com

But thanks to Scott, for I would never have discovered this record and so many others if not for him and his brilliant reviews. He is seriously underrated. I would love to see a discussion between Scott and Chad Kassam.
@@leapolddilg I see that in my future 😁
Great review Scott
I’m on the fence with this one as I really love the Mofi 45….
Robert you may need this copy!
What else have you got for this Crosby album?
@@ThePressingMatters Scott, I don’t have any versions of this, sadly so now you’ve sent me on yet another quest, which is fine of course 😊
@@robertmorgan9205 Well worth picking up this version, Robert. The music is unlike anything you've ever heard. Very unique
@@ThePressingMatters I’d always take your advice when it comes to which version to choose so I’ve noted that thanks, Scott.
@@ThePressingMatters Precisely and well said.
Great review as always. We get them a little bit later here in Sweden. Hoping my copy arrives next week!
Hope to hear back from you once you've heard it! Please return and comment. And thanks for watching!
@@ThePressingMatters got a hand full of the releases and I have been nothing but blown away by them. They are pricy here in Sweden due to all being US imports so about 90-100 dollar for one but it’s worth it imo. End game on the once I got.
Still a good value with the quality of this series. Most are definitive I would say.
Hi Bill,
Thanks for your question.
Spot on. But please do not discount the 2005 45rpm, it is glorious, and it would great for you to hear it. My system is
Kuzma Reference TT
Kuzma 11 inch 4 point tonearm
EMT Novel Titan cartridge
RCM Therrria MK 11 phono stage
Vinius Audio TVC-05 passive preamp
ME Geithian 901k loudspeakers
Hi!
Thanks for watching! I didn't mean to shortchanged thr original Classic Records 45 - I simply didn't hear it. I'm not sure why they didn't use the plates again but I doubt it was any issue with that mastering. Most likely an issue with a lost or damaged plate.
Thanks, I'm glad I didn't buy MoFi. Waiting for a 75 th preorder to ship together. Great review !!!!
@@ThePressingMatters I will soon as I get it Scott.
This is the one to get , I think you might be disappointed with the Classic 45 from 20 years ago .
Love your reviews and this is on order now and I also can't wait for the Yes and the rest of the Genesis . 👍😁
Hi Tony,
Though I've never heard the Classic 45, I do own the 33 and it's ok. This is on a whole new level. Can't wait to hear what you think about it! I have a Yes preview coming up and you know I'll cover every Genesis album in detail.
@@ThePressingMatters I will let you know when it arrives 👍😁

Hmmm…🤔
I have the Mobile Fidelity 45 and hoped I was already sorted but maybe not…
I just received Gaucho the other week…this Bernie Grundman chap is driving me to penury 😆
Nice review Scott, thank you!
@@ThePressingMatters great stuff, I’ll keep an eye out for that.
You're welcome, my friend. So great to have you onboard here.
Hi Jeff,
You have a point of course, and there shouldn't be an assumption. Probably wasn't necessary to comment about it, even in speculation.
Jeff,
I was wondering if you have this recording, and which version you have.
@jeffbellin8224 Wow that is unusual! Definitely have a listen to it. It might be all you need. The best originals do sound lovely.
I'll pull it out and give it a cleaning and a listen. By the way, a copy of the Gaucho UHQR just arrived.
Hey Scott,
How does this pressing handle the distortion in the vocals on the first two tracks?
What do you think of the 33.3 Chris Bellman cut ? If you made a video answering this I apologize.
Thanks !
@mikezlotnicki6684 I'm pretty sure, going off memory, that the Atlantic surpasses everything I've heard.
I will check for you though
I just listened to it tonight. Then played the Atlantic. There's no question in my mind - the Atlantic is superior. Much more open sounding, many stunning and beautiful moments. The Bellman is ok, but I never felt at any time it bettered the Atlantic. Much better overall musical involvement with the Atlantic. The music feels expansive, like it can finally breathe. I would seriously consider it over any other pressing. Hope that helps!
@@ThePressingMatters Sounds like I may sell the Bellman and grab the Atlantic !!! Thanks again.
Actually, the MoFi pressing of this record is AAA (like the two MoFi 45s of American Beauty and Workingman's Dead).
@@ThePressingMattersOops, I misunderstood what you said in the video. 😅
Hi Scott, it appears you are getting cold feet re Jazz, is that possibly the case? Cheers
If there's a particular release you think you'd like covered, I'm open to suggestions!
@@ThePressingMatters Nothing urgent really, I am keen on those new 7 LPs from Monk, coming in both the boxset and individually from Analogue Productions. Thanks!
@@drazenbabich Yes that definitely caught my eye. I'll look into it.
I've got a bunch of diverse stuff coming up - some hard rock (Trower Bridge Of Sighs) Jazz Vocal ( Billie Holiday Body And Soul), Prog Rock (Yes and Génesis, Classical (Michelangeli Ravel Piano Concerto) Jazz (Johnny Hodges, Ellington), and a full length Opera (Callas/Lucia/1955) and a top 10 list, equipment review, accessory review, etc
Where else you gonna find Robin Trower and Maria Callas on one channel lol!)
I'll buy your unopened MFSL 45, PM me if you're. ready to let it go!
