      Yes, me too. Years ago bodysurfing in heavy surf at Whale Beach (Sydney) I was gone for all money, dragged out in the wash and a random surfer reached down and pulled me over his board. I stayed long enough to get my breath back and caught a wave in. I hung around and tried to catch the dude to thank him for saving my life but never saw him again. He was my angel, that's for sure. Take care out there friends.

    • @josephleonard889
      @josephleonard889 7 месяцев назад

      @@deldridg it was my first time surfing, December on North shore, I'm from Ohio and wasn't familiar with how bad the waves could be that time of year at the beach I was at. The waves started out normal calm nice weather. Then it got a little more rough and we were out pretty far the waves started hitting around what id imagine was 10 ft and we were riding them on our knees trying to learn how to stand up slowly the current, waves, and our egos pulled us apart( a group of three of us) I was begining to feel timid so I was trying to make my way to a rock bed that I could then climb through to shore and wait for my friends I was making progress towards it, when I started feeling like a force pulling me back as I turned around I seen this massive wall of water and as I looked up I scaled it to be close to 30 feet I quickly got ready to jump on the surfboard even if on my knees to hope God would let me ride it instead of be crushed by this terrifying wave,but there was another plan, the wave grew so large I began to nearly see the sand protruding from the ocean floor and before i could even think i was crushed by the wave and i mean crushed it pinned me to the ground as the water crushed me and continued to flow above my head the only thing bringing me to the surface was the surfboard. When I finally got to the surface after what felt like more than 5 minutes went by I couldn't move I was weak from the beating but instinct was kicking in and I was treading water the best I could every inch I tried to move forward was sending me backwards from the current and waves were still crashing over me I was in the middle of accepting my certain death and praying for God to give my children a way to be at peace with this after I was gone when I seen the end of a big surf board in my face with a foot and man yelling grab it once I grabbed it I could feel his strength pulling us forward and that was the biggest feeling of relief the moment my life was in his hands I'd never felt safer. I do believe I offered all the money I had at the time he was just a local who knew tourists often make mistakes like I did and he didn't want to see a life lost so he dedicates his time to being a life guard. That's true selfless service

      As someone who has been in waves like this many times, and tossed into the water, I am curious, what specifically makes it dangerous? I've never been hurt or injured from it. Maybe because I go under or over the wave? Or is it the board coming back to hit you that makes it dangerous? Or maybe there are rocks here? Mine was pure sand.

    Glad he got through this and didn't suffer life changing injuries or worse!!! Born and raised in Hawaii in 1960, growing up in our family beach house right here, I have been surfing my whole life since I was 5 years old. Pipeline is the most dangerous wave on the planet, and pretty much more surfers have drowned/ died here at this surfing spot than all other places on the planet. I became an expert surfing this wave and surfed it for decades. I have had 5 close friends die surfing this wave, one in my arms while trying to get him into shore after a bad injury to his neck/ head from the nose of his surfboard on a Wipeout! I nearly drowned twice, even being so intimately familiar with this wave. One of the times I had honestly accepted I was going to drown after being held in the impact zone and taking 8 huge waves in a row being held down to where when surfacing each time after about 6 waves, still being held by the rip current and waves right in the impact zone, I just couldn't breathe in any air to my lungs. I was spent!! I maintained consciousness floating under the surface, unable to move, and just popped up to see another huge wave breaking, about to rag doll me again, when an arm went around me from behind, putting me into the lifeguard position, holding me tightly as we both took the lip right on us in full impact. It was one of my best friends, who I grew up and went to school with since I was a little kid. His name is Mark Cunningham, an absolute legend Hawaii lifeguard who worked the Ehukai lifeguard tower for over 20 years. He's one of the most famous lifeguards amongst a long line of Hawaiian guards, and he said he literally jumped out of the tower and sprinted at full speed up the beach as soon as saw me take off, to get above the rip current to where you have to dive into the shorebreak and swim out going sideways in the strong undertow and riptide

    A rip current to my daughter and sons girlfriend out to sea, my son went to save them but was starting to go under, i was in the condo, (my friend was beach side) A stranger went out and grabbed my daughter whom also helped herself get back to shore. My sons gf was too tired and could not assist him and was not listening so they were both being dragged out farther. My son went under several times and has said, he wanted to give up but after resting a moment got more strength to try again. He finally made it in but it was one of the worst feelings in the world to watch your (grown) children go through. The ocean can be very scary

      Learn how to spot them.. you can see the ripples they form in between waves you want to be right in front of the waves if you want to avoid them bigger the waves the harder the rip so if you see a spot with no waves and it's overhead surf your best just not getting in the water unless you like surf then hop in the rip and let it take you there.

    • @daydayakaasonofgod593
      @daydayakaasonofgod593 7 месяцев назад +1

      I was wondering the same. I think it was the drop hitting the floor too hard. Seems injury to his back from impact

    • @frankierobello1314
      @frankierobello1314 7 месяцев назад

      The height of the wave is bigger than it looks, and there is reef under the water so when you crash the water forces you down and often times when you fall that hard you will hit the reef and get injured as well as your board smacking you and the water.
