    What baffles me is how people just focus on trucking jobs. Do you really think once AI is sophisticated enough to guide a 60 ton vehicle down an icy road it won't be able to do the majority of what's done on computers by white collar workers? This isn't just going to be truckers. It's going to be a lot of us.

      White Collar jobs yes, most programming will stay. As a CS major, yeah, there's a long fucking way to go before you can teach an AI to program efficiently since a lot of it is critical thinking that AI just can't do.

      @shaneskull820 5 лет назад +23

      @@servebotfrank4082 - I'd respectfully disagree with you there. As a programmer myself for many years, I don't think our job is conceptually as complex as we let on. Sure, if you're creating a foundational technology such as a new protocol or codec then it requires intense critical thinking, but the majority of applications are essentially remixed MVC-like applications with less than 50 or so fundamental building blocks. Look at a highly complex gaming engine such as Unreal Engine and view their Blueprint visual programming tool. It doesn't take much of a leap to see how we could train AI to leverage a similar flow-based model. I could easily see programming tools that make the composition of most web, desktop and mobile applications fairly turnkey for 90% of scenarios.

    I worked in an AI lab for a national-scale bank in Canada, my VP basically said that I was to figure out how to automate loan officers' jobs using basic technology (low-hanging fruit) to AI (things like Optical Character Recognition or Computer Vision for document verification). Don't think this is far away, whole departments (ranging from 30 to 50 people each) are doing basic tasks that pass off as doing a lot of work on the surface but once you tally up the numbers is not a lot of stuff done while being paid salaries that can be $50K. If you think white-collar automation is faraway, then you are wrong.

    • @XKenny77
      @XKenny77 5 лет назад +8

      You're so right. I used to know a guy who was a bank manager. He hated that all loan decisions were now made by a computer. He had no input any more, meaning nobody could look into someone's eyes and judge whether they were really a good bet or if they just knew how to write a good business plan with the right numbers. That was almost 15 years ago. It's obviously only going to get worse.

      White collar creative here (writing, video, content creation, etc) and even in that highly specialized and changing field automation is taking more and more of my job responsibilities. In the short term, it’s nice and frees me up to focus on the aspects of my job that require creative focus. But there’s a big gulf between the aspects of my job that I value and the aspects of my job that my employer values. I punch a clock, wear slacks, and sit at a desk most days. I’d consider myself a white collar worker and the machine learning team within our company terrifies me. James Loehr I dont know why so many folks think that the only option is for them to get a Master’s degree in computer engineering or to become a doctor or lawyer. Isn’t it perfectly realistic to expect perhaps even most of them to gravitate towards the skilled trades? We’re in such dire straights that I’m sure a number of companies would be willing to train individuals from the bottom up, and family oriented truckers would probably be a reliable investment for the most part.
      Contrary to popular belief, we are a looong ways aeay from automating plumbing and electrical wiring and the like, and those are great pathways to starting your own business.
      When it comes to automation, I’m not sure why we focus so much on truckers - a population with ample opportunities to find other decent paying work - instead of the intellectually disabled population who will have no other option because they’re more or less incapable of learning new skills. There are probably way more of them than truckers.

People won't be needed to build, fix or drive any kind of new vehicle. Your main car dealerships will have 2 or three techs working just keeping an eye on the robots. The other 20-50 won't be required.
    Big grocery stores won't have people on the tills anymore as every item will scan itself on exit of the store, The shelves will be stacked by robots. Coffee shops won't need people, restaurants won't need people other than maybe the chef, eventually they will be replaced too. Places like phone shops and Apple stores don't need people, if your device is faulty you just place it on a tray, you'd type on a screen what is wrong, the tray has a scanner on it that wirelessly removes all of your data and puts it onto another phone, that phone rises on another tray next to your phone, you take the replacement and your old phone falls through a trap door to be taken away to a factory where a team of robots remove all the components then builds a new phone with the viable bits which then gets returned to the store for the next person. After that the store is closed down, when you get a problem you'd just ping the manufacturer who sends a drone to wherever you are and swaps your phone for a new one. No factory/manual worker is safe. After that it will be google, Microsoft, Facebook etc laying off all of it's workers, as A.I will just come up with all the new ideas and do all the programming. A.I can do it now to some level. Then its gp's, why have a human there that you tell your issue to when you can just tell a robot which scans the biggest library of symptoms and issues available in a matter of seconds and can then prescribe a drug or treatment or refer you to see a specialist. A.I and robots are going to change this world drastically.

Once they're on the road they'll have human co-pilots for the first 3-5 years and then phase them out quickly in order to reap massive profits. The 2 minor issues it faces are typical for most emerging technologies. 1 Not enough experts/easier to learn tools. 2 It's also quite expensive to design automated tech. Once it's cheap to do it easy, it's gonna be like flipping a switch, life as we know it will be shaken up overnight unless we prepare for it.

The fact that some of the displaced workers will riot, commit suicide, etc., is no excuse to inhibit progress. we can only drive 11 hours and need to shut down 10 hours
    If the industry went full self driving heres where problems come in. How do they get fuel who pays for it, if they are electric how do they recharge. When they get to shipper and receivers how do the know which door to back into. If it's a tanker or refer who will wash out the trailer, if flat bed who straps the load down.

Heck, if they are willing to invest this kind of money into an automated truck, don't you think they would have a repair/hub center in the middle of the US? Aside of those issues I dont see an electric motor pulling 40 tons for miles on end. The batteries would drain 1000x faster and the motor will wear out. Trucks today can drive over a million miles without needing a rebuilt engine. If they can do that then I'll be impressed.

    I wonder how many people were telling pilots that they would soon become obsolete when autopilot systems were developed decades ago that were more advanced then than these "autonomous" trucks are now? The military even had B-17 drones back in the 50's. We should have had all drone airliners for 20 years already by now according to the socialists. Yet that hasn't happened and won't happen in the foreseeable future. Considering that planes would be a whole lot easier to completely automate than trucks as they encounter far less traffic and basically fly in a straight line I don't think truckers should be the least bit concerned. They'll just have a more advanced cruise control which I don't think they will mind.

    There's a very important detail about automation that is frequently missed. Automation is not a bad thing, which will wreak havoc and should be stopped. Automation is a great thing. It means that, where 1 million people today can produce X amount of services, in the future 1 million people will produce and enjoy 10 times more stuff and services. Everybody can get much richer. The problem is making sure that there's a system to distribute the new wealth and that it doesn't stay with the few people who made the robots. Universal basic income can do it. Socialism can do it. Even communism might work. But libertarian free market capitalism can absolutely not work.

    People that think truckers are going to be replaced by computers do not know what a trucker does. He is not just holding a steering wheel. He's monitoring and maintaining his truck all the time. Keeping an eye on wearing parts. Having them replaced. Limping his truck to the nearest service when something unexpected goes wrong. Putting chains on tires in bad weather. There is alot more to trucking then holding a wheel. Second question no one has answered. What happens when the computer gets into an accident? Who is responsible when a senser glitch causes an accident that kills people? Who is responsible? Will it be the mechanic that last serviced the vehicle? Will it be the programmer who wrote the lines of code?? Will it be the CEO of the trucking company? A trucker can and does get held responsible if he messes up. People are forgetting that trucks are VERY LARGE and going down the highways next to you. 60 000 or even up to 160 000 lbs at 70 mph racing down the highway. More of trying to de-mean the work that good people do. Your JUST a trucker. Yeah... go ahead and give it a go. Dodging a 75 foot 80 000 lbs vehicle down town through traffic and reversing it into some god awful tight spot. Then tell me someone is JUST a trucker.
