As usual, it's pretty upsetting to see mental health focusing on children and "young people". There are a huge amount of people who slipped under the radar of mental health help before it was available to young people. Many were told they could go on a children’s waiting list, but by the time they could see someone they would not be children, but could not go on the adult’s waiting list because they aren’t adults yet. There are the people who need representation. There are the people who have turned to drugs and those who need so much help

      @b6b6b6b6b6 Год назад +7

Good question. That’s a reason why the system is stupid. Autism isn’t even really a “disorder” in my opinion, it’s just a very common and evolutionarily beneficial neurotype and it’s inherent to your brain and the way you process stuff. Autistic people don’t inherently have bad mental health and have mental breakdowns a lot and are nonverbal, it’s just that most autistics go through a lot of trauma and abuse in society and it affects each of us differently. No diagnoses based on a biased neurotypical asking kids questions can always detect if you have the autist neurotype. I know it’s hard for some people to reject the system and accept the truth, but consider it.
Also I understand if you need a diagnoses for personal validation and/or systemic support and stuff, but I still think the system for diagnosing people’s neurotypes is stupid and you’re valid af whether you’re diagnosed or not. ✌️

My daughter went for an assessment recently, but all of the activities they wanted her to play with were sensory seeking, and she is sensory avoidant. She was also far too aware that she was being watched, and she behaved differently because it was a stranger asking her to do things.. They didn't seem to take any of this into account, despite seeing how hyper the sensory toys made her, and said they didn't have enough evidence to diagnose her yet. Now we have to wait another couple of months at least for them to do another assessment at her school without her being made aware of their presence. We've already been waiting 4 years for this appointment! Feels like it's never ending and I'll be gutted if they say they can't diagnose her when they've already said girls are much better at masking.

My parents are kinda ableist so I worry that they'll purposefully make it seem like I'm making things up.
Edit: My therapist is helping me get a diagnosis so hopefully that'll help!
Edit 2: I had the final bit of the first part today, also I'm getting assessed for ADHD at the same time. Anyway, I've been officially moved to the second (and final) stage of the assessment which should be in a few months.
Edit 3: The first part of the final stage is in 4 days and the final part ever is on the 29th september! I'm so excited and so nervous.
Edit 4: I had the 3rd part out of 4 today (first part of final stage) but I only talked to the psychiatrist for 10-15mins. He told me a story and asked if I could guess what they thought.
Edit 5: I had the final part like 2 weeks ago-ish. It was over an hour and the psychologist asked me lots of questions and got me to different activities. I still have to wait for my feedback meeting to find out if I'm actually getting diagnosed with anything. That's on the 18th October.
Edit 6: I've just been told that I get the initial result tomorrow, and then the details in the feedback meeting. I'm so nervous.
Edit 7: I haven't had the feedback meeting yet but... I'M OFFICIALLY DIAGNOSED AS AUTISTIC
Edit 8: I've had the feedback meeting and they said that they'd reccommend me going to an OT and an educational psychologist. They said we'd have to go down a different route for an ADHD diagnosis though, because my school results were good, which is kinda ableist. The most important part of it though, is that I'm now officially diagnosed and my school is aware.
Edit 9: I’ve now been officially diagnosed with ADHD aswell as of like 2 weeks ago and I start treatment soon. I’m finding it kinda hard to accept but I’m getting there. My parents are less ableist now because they’ve learnt lots during this, plus my dad got diagnosed with ADHD.
Good luck to everyone else trying to get a diagnosis!

I brought my 5 year old to evaluation yesterday. The psychiatrist was a 60 year woman that soon started yelling orders at my boy and blaming his challenges on us parents not being strict enough with him. 3 hours of hell. Yes my child is good at masking (able of doing eye contact and back-and-forth discussion) but there's also a whole page of neurodiverse behaviors he has (including sensory-processing issues of all sorts, spinning around us for minutes us, which is akin to stemming, pathological demand avoidance, high rigidity, intense difficulties with transitons, and the list goes on). She said because he has good eye contact and back-and-forth she cannot make a diagnosis of autism and that it's up to us to be extremely firm in dealing with him (including yelling at him as she did many times I guess). I feel really defeated.

i really do believe i have autism and i am on the spectrum but my parents will not allow me to get a diagnosis as it according to them ‘takes up too much time and is pointless’ i just want to get diagnoses as i have breakdowns in class just because of a loud noise or flickering light and i keep masking it and its so hard for me but my parents will only disagree and claim i do not and never will have autism so im either planning on insisting it or getting diagnosed when im older. :(

Good luck, I hope you get to be diagnosed. My son just finished doing all the assessments in the U.S. though the online schooling. He was having too much trouble with concentration and trying to figure out his words and put his thoughts into words for English as well as trouble with algebra. He will be 17 in September, and was labeled with autistic tendencies at 18 months old. We had a zoom meeting with the school psychologist, an intervention specialist and some of his teachers. They said it seems like Asperger’s, but that isn’t a separate diagnosis anymore, plus autism. But his iq test was very high in some areas at 130 and lower on others. I pushed him to get tested as I could tell somethings he was struggling with and he wanted to give up and drop out of school. I know a diagnosis won’t change anything, but didn’t want him to not know and find out a lot later in life. We have another meeting on Thursday to get an IEP set up and hopefully he will go along with whatever can help him. Good luck to all of you and I hope everyone gets the diagnosis to at least know. Much love 💕

I'm watching this in the US right now because I'm currently getting evaluated (this is day 2) and the evaluation is making me so nervous. I can really see how different the process is (and I'm also probably older than the kid in the video, I'm turning 15 in two weeks.). However, it is much easier to talk to the evaluator than my own therapist. When I go to regular therapy, sometimes I can't talk because I can't figure out how to communicate my thoughts verbally. What I've gone through so far has mostly been a few questions to see if I have autistic traits, and I did a bunch of math and language questions. I don't know what's going to happen today.

My care nurse cathy who helps my mom and dad with questions about my health mentioned she thinks my sensory issues, problems with eating, and issue with doing anything im not interested in might mean i should get tested for autism, and i dont know that much about it so ive been watching videos to prepare incase it happens and i get overwhelmed. My dad says i dont show the major symptoms of it, but i show more minor symptoms like my problem with growing up mentally (im 14 but still cant get out of the state of being like 7 or 6), my issue with obsessing over mermaids (ive been obsessed with them for months and its insanely diffucult to do anything unrelated to them, which gets very overwhelming), and my issue with acting myself when meeting new people (like when i meet someone it goes like this; i observe them and their behaviors ALOT, i try not to speak too much, and then later on i start acting like them to match their energy, and when i get comfortable enough i eventually start acting myself again, but sometimes it resets if i get uncomfortable.) i wonder if its the reason i have issues talking too, idk, but im trying to learn about it. Does anyone know what usually happens during assessments? Im scared cuz i see alot of the videos the person questions you alot about things D:

Girls with autism often tend to mask their autistic traits rather than not from a very young age to fit into society's standards of how they should act whereas boys tend not to mask it as the society's standards of a boy is vastly different to a girls. That could be a reason as to why you tend to conceal your autistic traits and it doesn't mean your brother is 'worse' than you. It just means that you have developed an extremely unhealthy coping mechanism to mask your traits and that often leaves you at high risk of autistic burnout, depression, anxiety, e.t.c
If your not a girl (or not biologically of a female sex) than know that you can still be masking your autism its just alot more common in girls. Im not sure what the situation is now since you posted this a year ago but if youve not been assesed yet just know that there are many like you who go through the same thing and slip through the cracks and not to lose hope of getting the care and support you need. If you are an adult, i know it might be difficult and a long process (depending on where you live) but it would definitly be worth it to go to a doctor and seek a diagnosis since i promise you its better late than never and just know you will have to have quite alot of evidence and thorough evaluations and assesments and they may also need to interview your parents and family members. If you are a child (under 18) then i suggest if you havent already to tell your parent/s or guardian/s your worries and attempt to get them on board to get you assesed. If they dont listen or agree then you could go to the staff member at your education facility responsible for this kind of stuff and tell them your worries. If none of that works, then dont lose hope and know that you will have a chance to be diagnosed as soon as u turn 18 😊 Hope all is well and things get better for you - a 16 yr old girl

Hey, can you please start that again, my friend's been waiting 6 years (and has tried to kill himself) can't get help from school because his ADHD hasn't been confirmed.

I want to take an autism test tbh, because I feel like I have and have checked out for many “symptoms” for autism, I already know I have adhd so could be that, but I’m honestly rlly scared to tell my parents. They’d just laugh at me. They already didn’t tell me that I have adhd for a year, then now they make jokes about it every time I zone out or can’t focus. Like what?!
